1 Vol. IX, No. VI The Official Newsletter of H.O.G. Chapter #2376 Anthem, Arizona USA June 2018 From the Director H ello again Chapter members, welcome to our monthly newsletter. Our Chapter picnic is THIS SATURDAY, June 2nd. I hope to see a lot of you there because I know we ll have a great time. It s a nice place to have good food and great conversation. We have many more great things planned for the next several months and I hope you all will join us for adventures on the road, and some darn good food, too. If you have some ideas of places you would like to see & visit, please send your ideas to our Head Road Captain, Keith Potter Preston, at roadcaptain@anthemhog.com. We are also looking for new road captains, if you are interested please let us know and we can get you on the road to becoming one. It s not much time, two or three meetings a year, and one or two rides a month to lead. And one great benefit: you get to be in front! As Road Captain, you serve the Chapter membership in a positive way. Your Chapter officers are putting forth great efforts to make our Chapter one of the best in the valley, so support them any way you are able to. Volunteers are welcome at all of our events, which make them even better, so if you have a little time to spare we would greatly appreciate it. You may talk to any of the officers and tell them you would like to help. Most of all have fun, ride safely, and join in the activities. 3 Road Captain Report Keith Potter Preston Head Road Captain T his month s report will be different from all those before and those yet to come. Why? Because I will be gone during the month of June. I will resume the mileage recognitions and group riding when I return in July. This month, I am taking a trip that has been on my bucket list since I was a kid. I will take a lap around the Lower 48 states. More precisely, I plan to travel through every state that forms the edge of the continental United States. Along the way I will ride some well-known motorcycle roads, some of which have odd names like 3 Twisted Sisters, Skyway, Tail of the Dragon, Skyline Drive, Kancamagus Highway, and Going to the Sun Road, to name a few. I will travel through over 900 known cities or towns, 38 states, 5 Canadian Provinces, and almost 300 counties. My mileage is estimated at just over 10,000 miles (that s 16,093 kilometers to our friends in the north). Along the way I will be collecting points for the ABCs of Touring and that s what some of you will see on social media: Lots of pictures of my bike parked next to a sign. The most important thing to me, though, is that I will see parts of our great country that I ve never seen before. Many of these places will be alongside two-lane blacktops, while others will be a blur on the Interstates. I am grateful and blessed for this opportunity to be able to embark upon a dream ride. During my journey I will think about many things. Riding a motorcycle causes me to think a lot. One of my thoughts, I m sure, will be of you: my riding brothers and sisters in Anthem H.O.G. I will look forward to the time when we ride together after I return. In the meantime and this goes for me, too remember to always ride safe and have fun. Chapter Chatter 3

4 The Electra Glide Editor s note: Reprinted with permission from T he iconic Electra Glide... On the list of most important H-D motorcycles, the Electra Glide model belongs near the top. For one thing, it s the only Harley-Davidson motorcycle to be part of a movie title. But that s not why the storied Electra Glide motorcycle looms so large in Harley history. Fifty years after its introduction, it remains an H-D icon. However, in 1965 it didn t just appear out of thin air in The Electra Glide motorcycle s evolution goes all the way back to 1941, when the 61-cubic-inch Knucklehead engine (EL) was joined by a 74-inch counterpart, the first FL model. Eight years later, an all-new telescopic front fork began to replace the old springer front end. The name Hydra Glide was originally intended for only the front fork but more commonly became associated with the motorcycle itself. With the arrival of the 1958 model year, rear suspension was added, and the name changed to Duo Glide. The next big improvement came in 1965 with the addition of an electric starter. Like the naming of the latest child in the family, something new and different had to be paired with the existing ancestry. The name Electra Glide was a perfect fit... and it stuck. It also helped bring touring to the forefront of the design. The electric starter made life easier and broadened the appeal of motorcycling. Wrestling with the kick-start engine could be difficult, and the electric start quickly took over. Even if some today look back on the kick-start as a romantic age, others remember trying to kick over their Big Twin motorcycles on a cold morning. As the 1965 sales brochure read, We ve taken a few of the kicks away, but none we thought you would miss. The earliest marking of the Electra Glide most frequently showed the bike with the King of the Highway option group, which included saddlebags, removable windshield, luggage rack, and plenty of chrome goodies. It resulted in a look that firmly established the iconic H-D Touring motorcycle that carries into the present day. The Road King models from 1994 onward draw their inspiration directly from the classic 1960 s Electra Glide models. However, a new defining feature was yet to come. For 1969, designers crafted an accessory fairing specifically for the Electra Glide model that was designed to keep more wind off the rider. Initially, it was merely a shell, with no inner fairing or instrumentation. By 1971, the windshield fairing kit more commonly known as the Batwing Fairing became a standard feature. Chapter Chatter 4

5 For years, the Electra Glide was the sole member of the Touring family. The model wasn t joined by a sibling until 1979, with the addition of the Electra Glide Classic. The Touring family has typically been the first to receive new features, and the Electra Glide often set the pace. Disc brakes were first employed in Harley-Davidson s first electronic fuel injection appeared on the 1995 Electra Glide Ultra. For the 2009 model year, all Touring bikes received a new frame that led to improved maneuverability and seating position. The motorcycle also served as a platform for the leaner Electra Glide Sport (1977) and more deluxe Electra Glide Ultra Classic (1989). The Ultra Limited was introduced for the 2009 model year, bringing the features and trim level to new heights. The Electra Glide was there at many historical moments during the last 50 years. When the famous buyback from AMF took place in June 1981, the first ceremonial bike the emerged from the assembly line in York, Pennsylvania, was an FLH Electra Glide Heritage Edition. The Electra Glide motorcycle also became the bike of choice for countless police departments worldwide. Without the Electra Glide motorcycle there is no Road King or Street Glide motorcycles. Compare a 1965 Electra Glide model with a modern Road King and see for yourself. But Harley- Davidson stylists have never forsaken the Electra Glide motorcycle roots. It was this spirit that led to the Project Rushmore upgrades for The batwing fairing was redesigned to reduce buffeting, yet the classic shape remained. The saddlebags and Tour-Pak were streamlined, all while increasing capacity. Even passenger comfort was researched for improvements. These features and many others marked the single largest product launch in Harley-Davidson history. The importance of the Electra Glide motorcycle goes far beyond its versatility and popularity. It s the modern standard for Touring motorcycles. Competitors have increasingly tried to copy everything from the fairing to the luggage units, always missing the mark. Harley-Davidson remains the dominant force in North American touring and is gaining ground in other nations. And the movie title? It was the 1973 motorcycle cop drama, Electra Glide in Blue. But don t be fooled. Today you can get one in just about any color you want. THANK YOU, CLOUDY! Many of you know Jim Cloud. He s the charter member who, in the past, has led our group to many great destinations. He s often the man behind the grill at HOGs & Dogs. After serving 8 years as Road Captain, he has decided to turn in his shoulder cord and step back from serving as a Road Captain. We look forward to his continued presence at meetings, HOGS & Dogs, and other chapter rides. Thanks, Jim, for giving so much to the Chapter. Chapter Chatter 5

6 Getting Turned On Keith Preston Potter Editor T here was a time in my life when I rarely, if ever, used turn signals while driving. I used to think that it was okay just to check ahead, behind, and to the sides before I changed lanes or turned a corner. I didn t give any thought to anyone s driving other than my own. I used to think to myself, I don t need to use signals because I know where I m going. Then I started riding a motorcycle in traffic. That was a game changer for me. While I rode my motorcycle, I often found myself dodging cars and trucks that would change lanes without signaling, causing me to immediately perform evasive maneuvers. Once in awhile, I d be forced into collision avoidance procedures when someone turned the corner without letting me know... even when I practiced proper space management. Definitely some scary moments... It would be easy to curse those inconsiderate drivers. And yeah... sometimes I still can t help myself and wind up uttering uncomplimentary words under my breath as I make my way past the offending driver. What in the hell is the matter with these guys? Are their turn signals broken or what!? I ve since resolved to always use my turn indicators, whether I m on two wheels or four. When I m driving my car, I try to use the turn signals at every appropriate occasion. I try to allow the blinker to flash at least four times before I begin my lane change. I try to allow the turn signal to become active at least a hundred yards before a turn; longer if the speed is faster. I ve also resolved to try and talk to my family and friends (when the time is right) about the virtues of turn signal performance. You ve probably noticed that I used the word try many times in the above description. Nobody s perfect and I admit that I m still a work in progress. But I am still going to try. It s probably naïve of me to think that my use of turn signals will influence other drivers by setting a positive example... but hey! One can only hope, right? Trivia Question The June Trivia Question: Due to the Editor being out of town during the month of June, the Trivia Question will take a one-month hiatus. Look for the Trivia Question in the July issue of Chapter Chatter. It could make you $25 richer! The May Trivia Question Answered: On U.S. highways, there usually is a solid white line painted on the right side of the right lane. On multi-lane highways, this solid white line appears on the right side of the lane farthest to the right. What is the legal name of this line? Answer: The Fog Line. Winner: 3 were correct. Jack Ackerman was the name drawn for the $25 Buddy Stubbs gift card. Congratulations, Jack! Chapter Chatter 6
