Vol. IX, No. VII The Official Newsletter of H.O.G. Chapter #2376 Anthem, Arizona USA July 2018 From the Director S ummer is here. How do we know? Well... it s hot. That doesn t mean we stop riding, not at all. We have many, many rides over the summer months. Some of the planned rides are short, some longer, some are overnight. We try to ride up to the high country where it s cooler, and enjoy the scenic beauty of the area. And the cooler temperatures, too. So how do we stay comfortable? There are many things you can do to make the rides more enjoyable. The first and most important is to drink lots and lots of water to stay hydrated. Take breaks often, and wear clothing that blocks the sun s rays while providing air to take advantage of the evaporative cooling effect. Some of us have and wear cool vests. They provide a cooling effect and are available from many sources. I have one and it really helps to keep the body core cooler while riding. They last about an hour, usually long enough to get home from the last stop of a ride. They can be recharged by soaking them in cool water after they dry out. Another item that helps is a cool neck gaiter. Just soak it in cold water and put it on. It helps keep the hot air off the face and neck and provides an evaporative cooling effect. These are just a few ideas to help stay comfortable on our summer rides. No matter how you stay cool and hydrated, please join us on our rides, they are great times, with good friends, and of course we always find a nice place to grab a bite. We pride ourselves on being a riding chapter and I look forward to seeing you all on our upcoming rides. 3 Road Captain Report Keith Preston Potter Head Road Captain I am a fan of YouTube. I ve learned a lot and been entertained from many of the videos that are posted there. This includes everything from motorcycle maintenance to riding techniques to cute cat videos. In a recent video, I learned something about the physics of cornering while riding a motorcycle. In simple terms, motorcycles should not exceed 1.1 Gs of lateral force when cornering. When they exceed this limit, the tires lose contact with the road surface, causing the motorcycle to crash. For most Harley-Davidson motorcycles, obtaining that level of lateral force would require a lean angle of at least 45 degrees. However, Harley-Davidson motorcycles will start to scrape floorboards or foot pegs at about 30 degrees of lean angle. This means that your bike will scrape the pavement way before it has enough lean angle to produce a G-force strong enough to cause your tires to lose contact with the pavement. Most riders rarely execute turns that cause their bikes to exceed the limits described above... even on fun, twisty roads. Of course, there are many other factors to consider when cornering, such as road condition, tire condition, weight distribution, and more. The most important factor, though, is you. Always ride within your own ability. Now that you know a little bit more about the physics of cornering, your mind can be at ease when taking the next twisty road. To learn more, see this YouTube video: We Are THE Chapter That Rides! The rides during the month of June were a blast! Here are a few photos. Chapter Chatter 3

How Hot IS It Out Here? Brian Hicks Safety Officer The Heat Index or humiture is an index that combines air temperature and relative humidity, in shaded areas, to posit a human-perceived equivalent temperature, as how hot it would feel if the humidity were some other value in the shade. The result is also known as the "felt air temperature, "apparent temperature," "real feel," or "feels like" temperature. How is the Heat Index calculated? The official formula is complex and for those of you who would like to perform your own calculations, I ve copied it for you below: Heat Index (HI) = ( T) +( rh) ( ) ( T rh) 10 3 T2 ( rh ) ( T rh) ( T rh ) (1.99 T rh ) ( T) + ( rh) ( ) ( T rh) 10 3 T2 ( rh ) ( T rh) ( T rh ) (1.99 T rh ) I minored in mathematics, so here is a simplified version: Temp(f) RH = YSAF* [see footnote below] Now that we know relatively how hot hot is, what can we do about it? There are a number of critical components to surviving in the heat: 1. Wear light colored clothing 2. Layer your clothing so you can adjust as the temperature changes. Breathable layers are better than nothing at all even under your riding gear. 3. Drink plenty of fluids pure water is best. Start drinking well ahead of your ride the effects of dehydration are cumulative. 4. Avoid caffeine, can act as a liquid diuretic and push water out of your system. If you must have a cup of caffeine, make sure you drink 8 ounces of water for every cup of coffee or soda that you drink. 5. Drink 1/2 ounce of water for every 1 pound that you weigh (as a rule of thumb, in a day). 6. Sip your water every 15 minutes or so, rather than drink more at longer intervals. 7. Install a cup-holder or use a hands-free Camelbak. 8. Wear lightweight clothing that covers your skin. It minimizes the sun s drying and damaging effects. 9. Stop frequently to rest, stretch, move around, drink water and cool down. 10. Plan your day around the weather. Start riding earlier and avoid riding during peak heat times. 11. Cool Vest is a wise investment and if properly used, can extend the riding day. 12. Pull Over Immediately if you start to feel light-headed, dizzy, have cramps or headaches, are nauseated or confused; or other early signs of heat exhaustion. Note: Parts of this article were borrowed from Liz Jansen 10 Tips for Hot Weather Motorcycle Riding. You ll notice that Ms. Jansen s Tips largely involve hydration and the need to consume water. Now add your own suggestions and prepare... prepare... prepare! (*) YSAF = You re Such A Fool [humor] Chapter Chatter 4

Vol. IX, No. VII Our Annual Chapter Picnic July 2018 Photos by Adrienne Coro Chapter Photographer Our annual Chapter picnic is a great time for all members. We get to hang out, eat free food, and swap stories about motorcycles and motorcycling. This year, the picnic was held at beautiful Bartlett Lake on June 2nd. A good time was had by all. Chapter Chatter 5

Ladies of Harley Visit Chompie s The Ladies of Harley sponsored a ride earlier in July to a Valley icon: Chompie s at Paradise Valley Mall. What better way to connect with your riding brothers and sisters than to share a great New York City meal in the middle of the Sonoran Desert? The hardest part was making a decision on which delicious meal to order. A good time was had by all. Chapter Chatter 6

America, the Beautiful Keith Preston Potter Editor In June, I completed a trip around the Lower 48 states by motorcycle. My lap around America covered just over 11,000 miles in thirty days. I saw a lot of beautiful places, rode some amazing motorcycle roads, met a lot of wonderful people, and had a lot of time to think. After all that thinking, I didn t discover any profound universal truths or revealing insights, but I did learn a few things. First, America is a lot bigger than it looks on a map. Even though I spent a year planning the routes, places to stay and eat, I underestimated the mileage for every day that I rode. I originally estimated the total mileage for the trip at less than 10,000 miles. My actual mileage was just over 11,000 miles. The thought of riding that far is enough to make one s butt hurt. To keep things in perspective, I chose to think of the trip as a series of shorter rides all strung together. I told myself that story over and over so that I could stay strong, not chicken out and stay home... which would have been a lot easier on the body. Second, each day s ride took longer than I thought it would. To compensate, I woke up before the sun each morning, with the goal of being on the road by 6 a.m. or earlier. This allowed time for more frequent breaks and for a sit down meal in the middle of each day... and still have enough daylight to make my camp at the end of a day of riding. I became an expert on setting up and taking down my camp. I developed routines that made the work easier and more efficient. I loved camping, but will admit that it is more of a challenge now that I am older. I remember a time when I was younger and camping was physically easier. The lesson here is clear: if you want to take a big motorcycle trip, don t put it off. Do it now, while you still can. A day will come when I will be unable to take big motorcycle trips... so I had better do things while I am still able to do them. Third, I love to ride. This passion is frequently reaffirmed by experiences on the road. Some of the most sublime moments on my trip came when I found myself on a good road, in scenic country, with no other traffic. These times were often early in the morning. I d like to thank the many deer, bear, antelope, alligators, and other critters for NOT sharing those moments with me. I appreciated them more from a distance. Hearing the one-note song of the engine when I was by myself in a beautiful setting was simply the best. I also enjoyed the roads that have a reputation in the motorcycling world: The Three Twisted Sisters in Texas, Cherohala Skyway, Tail of the Dragon, and Moonshiner 28 in the Carolinas and Tennessee, the Kank in New Hampshire, Going-to-the-Sun Road in Glacier National Park in Montana, and the Pacific Coast Highway in Oregon and California did not disappoint. Each road was different. Each road had its own beauty and personality. Each road provided a unique, excellent riding experience. Finally, I was on the road for thirty days. By the end, I really missed my wife and the comforts of home. However, I m glad that I took this lap around America. I rode through 37 states, including all of the states that form the edge of the Lower 48, plus all of the states east of the Mississippi River and five Canadian Provinces. I collected 140 points for the 2018 ABCs of Touring. I was able to visit my grandchildren and see our beautiful country in a close, personal way. Would I do it again? In a heartbeat. I m already thinking about where I might go next year. Chapter Chatter 7
