Vol. IX, No. IV The Official Newsletter of H.O.G. Chapter #2376 Anthem, Arizona USA April 2018 From the Director A pril is here and we have many great things coming up. First is the Desert Ride on April 7th. This is our annual charity ride, open to all bikes and riders not just Harleys. Then, our sister Chapter will hold their Wednesday Ride, a must attend event for all. Finally, there is the Buddy Stubbs Bike Bash, which is great fun, and there is even a chance to win a new motorcycle. The April Rides & Events calendar is out so if you haven t checked it out, please be sure you do. There are a great many rides and events to participate in. We have some new places to go and now we have opportunity rides on Wednesdays. All in all, April is a great time to ride. The weather is just about as good as it can be: not too hot and not too cool. I invite all members, new and old, to have some fun and ride along. Your Chapter officers are putting forth great efforts to make our Chapter one of the best in the valley, so support them any way you are able to. Volunteers are welcome at all of our events, which make them even better, so if you have a little time to spare we would greatly appreciate it. Most of all have fun, ride safely, and join in the activities. 4 My Biking History Clive Francis Planner Contributor T he year was 1963 and I had just turned 15. I completed my driver s training and was in possession of a much sought-after driver s permit in the state of Michigan. (At that time Michigan allowed those with permits to drive motorized scooters of less than 20 HP without a parent or guardian.) I was ready and eager to get my hands on some sort of motorized transportation. I had ridden my legs off on my bicycle and it was now time to give my butt a ride. This had been my dream for more years than I could count (or so it seemed) in my hometown of Spring Lake, Michigan. Suddenly, like a vision in the night, it appeared as we drove past a seedy-looking used car lot. It was not a car that I saw, but a wonderful 2-wheeled black beauty with, a 6 HP engine, a shifter on the side of the tank, a clutch (of sorts) on the left side, and a brake on the right. It was a thing of beauty that I could straddle like a bike and use all those horses to propel me around town. I was looking at a Cushman Eagle, and it was only $100. I could easily earn enough money during the summer to pay for this wonderful machine. I rode the wheels off that Cushman Eagle for the next year. I took turns giving my best buds a ride to school each day. We developed a schedule so that they could each get a ride. This meant we could all eliminate having to ride that yellow monster that we all disliked so much. I rode the Cushman until the next summer when, going by a similar seedy used car lot, I spied a robin s egg blue 1954 Chevrolet Belair. My dad was able to make some sort of a deal and I got the Chevy by trading my Cushman and adding $50. What a bargain. Sadly, that was the end of my riding career for too many years. Fast-forward to 2007: my sons were out of the house (for the most part) and I was a responsible 61-year-old man with a desire to get back on 2 wheels again. I took the motorcycle riders class at the local community college, assuring my wife that I was getting my motorcycle endorsement just in case I might want to get a bike sometime in the future when we were both old. I finally had my motorcycle endorsement. I found a Harley dealer nearby that rented Harley s by the day, week, or however long. I told my wife that I just wanted to rent a bike to see if I might like to ride one... just in case we wanted to ride when we got older. I rented a Harley Dyna for the weekend so I could give it a try. I used a vacation day from work and asked Gloria to drive me to the dealer. I proceeded to sign my life away, giving them all assurances that I had sufficient limit on my credit card, insuring that they could recovery damages up to $2,000. I also agreed not to hold the dealer, Harley-Davidson, or any of the employees, potential employees, or related family members liable if I should get into an accident. Chapter Chatter 4

History I then began my 3-day adventure. The only problem was that rain was forecasted for Saturday and part of Sunday. No worries! The dealer provided a rain suit, so off I rode. I managed to put just over 400 miles on the bike before returning it. And I might add, without so much as a scratch. So began the problem of how was I going to get a bike. I stopped at my local dealer and spoke with a salesman who soon became a good friend and from whom I continue to buy my bikes. His sage advice to me was to purchase a nice clean Dyna, which was smaller and was one that I could ride easily. Since he had none in inventory, and I was looking to buy inexpensively, I started a daily search on EBay. I submitted a few bids, but was not quite ready to take the plunge (I had not really talked with Gloria about making such a purchase.) Then my eye caught a nice little red Dyna, located nearby, and the opening bid was quite low. There were 4 days left before the bidding closed, which gave me 4 days to talk to Gloria and get her blessing. Well, as things turned out, I never really got an opportunity to broach the topic at home and the end of the bidding period was coming fast. On the last day, I stayed at work a little longer and submitted some bids. The bidding became furious in the final minutes and I got caught up in the melee. I submitted my last bid with 1 second to go and then it disappeared from my screen. I thought I must have lost the bid. However, upon returning to work the next day and checking my , I had a message from the seller asking if I would take the bike for my last bid. Now what to do? How would I explain this to Gloria? This was a case of doing something... then asking for forgiveness. My decision was to face the consequences head on. I told Gloria that we should take a trip to Louisville, Kentucky for the weekend, just for the heck of. I added, Oh, and by the way we could stop and pickup the Harley-Davidson Dyna motorcycle that I had just happened to buy on EBay... and by the way, since I was committed, I needed to go to the bank and get a check. I am lucky. I have a very, very understanding partner. I think she sensed at some point in this process that a motorcycle would be soon sitting in our garage. We had a great weekend in Louisville, after picking up my first Harley-Davidson motorcycle. I rode that bike as often as I could, but soon came to learn that anything more than about 50 miles produced more discomfort than I had expected, even with an air hawk seat pad. In 2009, I was at my local dealer and spotted a multicolored 2008 Heritage Softtail with just over 4,000 miles. It was a bigger than the Dyna and it seemed to fit my butt a little better. It had a great set of pipes (or maybe was it a lack thereof) that made it sound great. I went back to Gloria with a request to upgrade. I explained that I had gained more experience and wanted to ride north to our cottage, which is now our summer home. Those 250 miles would be much more comfortable on a bigger bike. More importantly, she would be able to ride on this bike with more comfort than she could on the Dyna. I had my 100 questions and answers pretty much memorized and only had to wait for the conversation to take place. Most of her questions never materialized. Lucky for me: I would probably have forgotten the answers. Chapter Chatter 5

History We rode that Heritage for the next couple of years and had a lot of fun on it. In fact, Gloria was awarded a perfect 10 by our Ann Arbor HOG chapter members for an amazing right side mount and left side dismount in one motion. I might add, that was the only perfect score ever recorded in our group of riders. We still get a great many laughs over that one, especially when we are all gathered and have had an adult beverage or two. The mount and dismount is regarded as legend today among our Michigan friends. In 2010, I suggested that we should rent an Ultra Classic Limited for a weekend ride that we were going to take with the Chapter. This was going to be a 400 mile ride and that we might want to give a try to see if it provided her more comfort to drive from the back seat than it was when we were on the Heritage. It was a much more comfortable ride for both us. Gloria was in her bark-olounger, where she could communicate with me in a calm and collected voice over the intercom about road conditions, oncoming cars, and other things that were her duty as the driver in the back. That weekend ride resulted in my purchase of a 2011 Ultra Classic Limited in the Root Beer color, which we promptly named Rootie. We were assured that our new bike was the only root beer colored Limited in Michigan, which was true until we saw similar bikes with the exact same color scheme as we rode through the countryside. Rootie carried us on a number of great trips to the hills of West Virginia, New York, the Dragon in Tennessee, plus adventures in Florida and Georgia with the greatest of ease and comfort. It carried me twice to Sturgis. Rootie worked hard and never required anything more than gas and an oil change every 5,000 miles. In 2015, when I decided it was time to quit working and live off the government, I purchased Babe the Blue Bike. When I first saw Babe, she was in the back lot of my Harley dealer, sitting on a pallet, wrapped in plastic with a lot of missing parts. Of course, those missing parts were on pallet number 2. I had gone to my dealer expecting to buy a 2015, which we had found at a dealer in Ohio. But Babe begged to come to my house and so she did. This is where she is today. My time on a motorcycle has been very limited in comparison to many of those that I ride with on a regular basis. I still find great enjoyment riding through the countryside when it is just me, my tunes, and the smell of the trees, flowers, and the wind blowing in my face. It is a therapy that I have come to enjoy a lot. Clive Francis Planner Chapter Chatter 6

Hang Up and Drive Keith Preston Potter Editor When I was a youngster, we had two telephones in the house. The one that hung on the wall in the kitchen had a really long, curly cord attached to the receiver so that my mother could talk on the phone and still have access to the kitchen, the back porch, or the laundry room. Back then, phones were only found in homes. Period. Nowadays, phones are everywhere and they are truly marvels of modern technology. Our phones can provide navigation, send text messages, connect to our social media accounts, play music or videos... and you can even make a telephone call on them. Like most things in life, however, technology comes with a downside. In the case of phones, they are now in our vehicles in cars and on our motorcycles and they can be a major source of distraction. I know you ve seen it: drivers weaving within their lane as they stare down at a screen. They stomp on their brakes when they realize they are about to hit someone from behind. They fail to move forward when the light turns green because they are reading what is on their phones... all the while distracted by looking at their phone. I have to admit that I feel a sense of resentment when I see these things while riding my motorcycle. Bikers never text and drive, right? I know I cannot change bad behavior exhibited by other drivers. I can, however, change my own behavior. I do this by watching the road and by watching the drivers in other vehicles. If I see them looking at a screen, then I become even more defensive and try to move away from them... all the time resisting the temptation to yell, Hang up and drive! To learn more about distracted driving, see this article published by the National Highway Safety Traffic Administration. Here s the link: Trivia Question for April The April Trivia Question: Name at least seven (7) companies that manufacture helmets for Harley-Davidson. Send your answer to editor@anthemhog.com. Your name will be entered to win a Buddy Stubbs gift card at our next Chapter meeting. Winner must be present to win. Good luck! The March Trivia Question Answered: How many Harley-Davidson motorcycles were sold worldwide in 2016? Answer: 260,289. Winner: Eight responses received, seven were correct. Jeff Feldstein won the drawing for a $25 Buddy Stubbs gift card. Chapter Chatter 8

Look Ahead, Stay Alert, Check Behind Brian Hicks Safety Officer Know the rules of the road to safe riding. Here is our Chapter safety slogan: LOOK AHEAD Look ahead, as far as you can see feet minimum Look for road signage Look for road construction Look for road blockage and accidents Look through the turns, not just immediately ahead of the motorcycle Watch for oncoming traffic Watch for vehicles backed-up ahead of you Move to the right lane portion for better visibility Slow if oncoming vehicle is risking passage Be mindful of vehicles ahead in your lane Watch for vehicles attempting passage of cars ahead of them Look for vehicles stopping abruptly or making turns from the roadway Be courteous to other drivers, allowing them to pass safely Watch for vehicles turning left in front of you Watch vehicles converging into your lane STAY ALERT Take regular breaks, at least every 1-2 hours Stay hydrated Stop if tired and unable to maintain an alert attention Resist day-dreaming Watch for road conditions and weather changes Slow down, if warranted Assess your motorcycle s vitals regularly Check your fuel level Check engine temperature Check warning lights Maintain your motorcycle Maintain proper intervals (refer to the 2-second rule) Choose an appropriate lane or portion for riding scenarios Left portion if preparing to pass Right portion for best visibility of clusters of oncoming traffic Chapter Chatter 10

See and be seen Move to adjacent, outside lane for emergency vehicles, if clear Eye oncoming vehicles front wheels for changes of direction Make eye contact with stationary vehicle operators Look twice, each way, left and right at stop signs before proceeding Yield to pedestrians and bicycles CHECK BEHIND Glance in your mirror frequently Ascertain if it is safe to pass Be aware of your surroundings Be aware of anyone who is attempting to overtake you with excess speed Keep track of traffic behind Use both: the rear-view mirror, and physically look over your shoulder before changing lanes Signal your move with turn signals or hand signals If you maintain your attention to this slogan, Look Ahead, Say Alert, Check Behind, there is a much greater likelihood you can avoid an accident! Please repeat it with me: LOOK AHEAD STAY ALERT CHECK BEHIND [This article is a reprint from the August 2017 issue of Chapter Chatter, Vol. VIII, No. VIII, p. 9.] Chapter Chatter 11
