1 Installing the Wireless Charging upgrade kit in a 2018 XT5 (Platinum version) September 2, 2018 Tools needed: Wireless charger upgrade kit Plastic trim tools 7 mm nut driver Background: I purchased the Wireless Upgrade kit from GMPartsHouse.com and used their instructions as a starting point. Their instructions pretty much work but they don t talk about several connectors that need to be disconnected from the center console compartment before it can be removed. It took me a couple hours to swap in the new module and put everything back together. Now that I ve done it once I think it would take 30 to 40 minutes knowing how to do it right now. I took a few pictures to help anyone else who wants to swap out their Wireless Charger. Procedure: As recommended by the GMPartsHouse instructions the first steps are to remove the left and right side panel trim from the center console. Here s a picture of the trim removed showing the location of the three brass clips that hold it in place. I recommend moving the seat back and then prying the rear clip loose first, then the front clip, and finally the middle clip. If you have trouble finding the right place to pry on, get down on the 1
2 floor with a flashlight, and then lift up on the bottom of the trim. If you get you head down low enough you can look up under the lower edge of the trim and see the attachment points. The middle clip is the only one that I had trouble finding. You want to use some plastic trim tools like these in the photo below to pry the clips out. 2
3 Here s a photo of the right side console trim panel attachment locations. Sorry I missed all the clips on the trim panel itself. The next thing to remove per the GMPartsHouse instructions is Front Floor console. This is where it gets a little tricky. Looking at their diagram I used a trim tool and pried on all four top corners of the console box and sure enough it popped right out. 3
4 But the console compartment would only lift up a little bit before the USB connector at the back stopped it from lifting up any more. They don t talk about this in the instructions so I tried pulling the USB connector out by slipping a small flat bladed along the edges and prying it out. It popped out easy enough and that allowed me to pull the USB connector through the hole and unplug the two connectors attached to it. 4
5 As you will see later there is a better way to do this as there are more hidden connectors yet to be discovered. Once the USB connector was disconnected the console box lifted up a little bit more, but it still only came about a ¼ of the way out as there was something holding it up. I wiggled it around and kept pulling on it and then it suddenly broke free. It turns out that there is a sensor clipped on to the bottom of the console box that is used to detect the key fob when you place it down in the pocket. I was lucky in that the plastic ring holding the sensor in place popped off without breaking. Again, this isn t the way to remove this, more on the right way later. Once the console compartment popped free there was one more connector to deal with, this being the connection to the LED lighting that is inside the console box. Here s a picture of that connector. Here s another view showing where the cable plugs into on the bottom of the console box. Unplug the LED cable from the bottom of the console box. 5
6 Here s a picture of the sensor ring that popped free of the bottom of the console. And here s where it goes on the bottom of the console box. It turns out that it is impossible (without some more disassembly) to reconnect the sensor ring to the bottom of the console box because the cable is too short and there is no way to get your hand down in behind the box. I took me a while to figure out how to get this back together but that is a later story for reassembly. 6
7 The next step in the GMPartsHouse instructions is to remove the Front Floor Console Trim Plate. I found that I only needed to pry loose the back two clips free and then you can lift up the back of the trim plate enough to get the Charger module in and out. Here s a photo with the back of the trip plate free and lifted up. 7
8 Now you can get access to the Wireless Charging module. Remove the two 7mm hex screws holding the module in place. Here is a picture of the old module slid halfway out and the connector at the back that needs to be disconnected. 8
9 Here is the new module slid halfway in and the connector at the back connected to the adapter cable. Once the new module is in place and secured with the two screws you can snap the back of the Front Floor console trim place back down in place. 9
10 And now for the rest of the story I spent most of the time trying to figure out how to get the sensor ring for the key fob reattached to the bottom of the console box. It turns out its impossible (without additional disassembly) to reattach the sensor ring because the cable is too short and there s not enough room to get you hand down behind the back of the console box. I found that the right way to do this is to remove the back of the center console so that you can get access behind and underneath the console box. This allows you to easily reattach the USB connectors to the back of the console box, and to also reach underneath to snap the key fob sensor ring back in place. I highly recommend that you remove the back of the center console before removing the console box as this will allow direct access to the USB connectors, and to the key fob sensor ring on the bottom of the console box. To remove the back of the center console pry on top of the console back as shown here and on the opposite side of the console. The clips are back in a ways so you have to push the trim tool in a ways but it popped off easily for me. Once the top two clips popped free all the other clips came right out and the rear of the console came free and was hanging by two electrical connectors, one for the rear climate control (if equipped) and one connected to the USB jack on the console back. Here s a picture showing the back popped off and the connector to the climate controls. 10
11 Here is a picture of the console removed showing where the attachment clips are. 11
12 The air duct for the rear needs to be removed to get access to the console box area. There are a couple of plastic snap rivets that hold the duct in place. Just lift up on the top half of the rivet and pull it up and then the rivet can be removed from the hole. The air duct comes right off after the rivets are removed. 13 Here s the air duct sitting on the floor along with snap rivets removed. Here s a picture in the area of the console box back with the air duct out of the way. You can see the USB connectors reinstalled to the back of the console box with the connectors easily accessible. 13
14 Here s a picture down lower showing where you can reach under the console box to re-clip the key fob sensor ring back in place. The blue and white wires at the center bottom are the wires that go off to that sensor ring. Just reach into that hole at the bottom and snap the ring back in place. You can lift up on the console box a bit to see what you are doing and I also recommend a flashlight. 14
15 Once you have the key fob sensor ring back in place the rest is a snap. Just press the console box back down until all the brass tabs engage and then you can console back on. Re-install the air duct by snapping the rivets back in, reconnect the two connectors, and then pop the console back in place by snapping all the brass clips in. Start at the bottom clips and then work towards the top clips. The last step is to reattach the side console trim panels. These just snap in place, but make sure the hook at the rear is in the notch it s supposed to be. It s a little tricky as you have to lean the bottom way out to get the top hook into the notch. If you miss it you will be taking it off again as I did as the back of the trim will not be tight into the panel as it should be. Too many words, you will figure it out. Summary The GMPartsHouse instructions are a good starting point but leave out a few details about how to disconnect the cables from the console box. You need to remove the console back (not in their instructions) to access the cable connectors that are behind and underneath the console box before it can be removed. It took me a couple hours to do the whole swap out but that included me trying to figure out what else I needed to take apart. I would guess it would take 30 to 40 minutes if you follow the notes to remove the console back before removing the console box. I hope this helps people trying to do this swap out on their own. 15
