Basic Amtrak Facts Amtrak s missin is t deliver intercity transprtatin with superir safety, custmer service and financial excellence. T accmplish this missin, Amtrak has identified three verarching strategic themes: Safety and Security, Custmer Fcus and Financial Excellence. During FY 2015 (Oct Sept. 2015), Amtrak welcmed abard mre than 30.8 millin passengers, representing the fifth straight year in which ridership has exceeded 30 millin. On an average day, mre than 84,600 passengers ride mre than 300 Amtrak trains. Amtrak perates a natinwide rail netwrk, serving mre than 500 destinatins in 46 states, the District f Clumbia and three Canadian prvinces n mre than 21,300 miles f rutes. It is the natin s nly high-speed intercity passenger rail prvider, perating at a tp speed f 150 mph (241 kph) ver current infrastructure. Mre than half f Amtrak trains perate at tp speeds f 100 mph (160 kph) r greater. The cmpany has mre than 20,000 emplyees. An average 600 daily Thruway schedules with guaranteed cnnectins via buses, vans, ferries and ther mdes extend Amtrak service t mre than 400 cmmunities nt served directly by Amtrak trains in 38 states and three Canadian prvinces. In December 2015, fr the first time in transprtatin legislative histry, intercity passenger rail and Amtrak reauthrizatin language was included as part f the federal surface transprtatin bill. When included amng U.S. airlines, Amtrak ranks N. 6 in dmestic passengers carried. In the Nrtheast Crridr (NEC), Amtrak nw has a very strng psitin in many markets that were previusly dminated by air carriers. Amtrak carried mre than three times as many riders between Washingtn, D.C., and New Yrk City as the airline industry. Amtrak carried mre riders between New Yrk City and Bstn than all f the airlines cmbined. Michigan Line: A 95.6-mile segment f up t 110 mph (177 kph) track frm Prter, Ind., t Kalamaz, Mich. Amtrak wns 18 tunnels (cnsisting f 24 miles f track) and 1,414 bridges. Amtrak wns three heavy maintenance facilities in Wilmingtn and Bear, Del., and Beech Grve, Ind., as well as ther maintenance facilities in Washingtn, D.C.; New Yrk City and Rensselaer, N.Y.; Bstn; Hialeah, Fla.; Chicag; New Orleans; Ls Angeles and Oakland; and Seattle. Amtrak is the nly railrad in Nrth America t maintain right-f-way fr service at speeds in excess f 125 mph (201 kph), and its engineering frces maintain mre than 350 rute-miles f track fr 100+ mph (160+ kph) service. In December 2012, a lease tk effect between Amtrak and CSX Transprtatin under which Amtrak perates, maintains and dispatches apprximately 94 miles f the Empire Crridr (New Yrk City- Niagara Falls) between Pughkeepsie and Hffmans (near Schenectady). Skilled emplyees at heavy maintenance facilities in Indiana and Delaware rebuild and verhaul a wide variety f cars and lcmtives. Seventy-tw percent f the miles traveled by Amtrak trains are n tracks wned by ther railrads. Knwn as hst railrads, they range frm large publicly traded cmpanies based in the U.S. r Canada, t state and lcal gvernment agencies and small businesses. Amtrak pays these hst railrads fr use f their track and ther resurces needed t perate Amtrak trains, with incentives fr n-time perfrmance. 4 Natinal Fact Sheet: FY 2015 Amtrak was recgnized fr wrkplace excellence by earning a spt in Frbes magazine s first-ever America s Best Emplyers Nrtheast Crridr Services Amtrak s Nrtheast Crridr (NEC) is the busiest railrad in Nrth America, with apprximately 2,200 Amtrak, cmmuter and freight trains perating ver sme prtin f the Washingtn-Bstn rute each day millin trips were made by Amtrak passengers n the NEC in FY This included all Amtrak trains that traveled ver sme prtin f the NEC spine (Washingtn-New Yrk-Bstn) and cnnecting crridrs t Harrisburg, Pa., Springfield, Mass., Albany, N.Y. and Richmnd, Va. In FY 2015, Amtrak carried 11.7 millin passengers n Acela Express and Nrtheast Reginal service trains n the NEC spine (Washingtn-New Yrk- Bstn) - the best year ever. Apprximately 750,000 Amtrak and cmmuter passenger rail trips are taken n the NEC every day. The Acela Express is the fastest train in the Western Hemisphere, with a nrmal maximum speed f 150 mph (241 kph) ver current infrastructure n tw sectins f its rute between Bstn and New Haven, Cnn. (35 ttal miles). Its tp speed is 135 mph (217 kph) between New Yrk, N.Y., and Washingtn, D.C. Acela trains carried mre than 3.4 millin passengers and generated nearly $585 millin in ticket revenue in FY The name Acela cmes frm a cmbinatin f the wrds acceleratin and excellence. Acela Express marked 15 years f peratin n December 11, In that time, it carried nearly 43 millin passengers. Acela Express is the cmpany s premium service. Apprximately 42.8 millin passengers traveled n the fleet f 20 Acela Express trainsets in the 15 years since revenue service began n Dec. 11, Amtrak wns and perates 363 miles f the 457-mile Nrtheast Crridr spine cnnecting Washingtn, D.C., Philadelphia, New Yrk and Bstn. Sectin 209 f the Passenger Rail Investment and Imprvement Act (PRIIA) required Amtrak and its state partners t jintly develp a cst-sharing methdlgy t equitably charge states fr state-supprted intercity passenger rail service. The PRIIA 209 methdlgy became effective in Octber Cntinued peratin f these state-supprted rutes is subject t annual perating agreements and state legislative apprpriatins accrding t Sectin 209. 7 Natinal Fact Sheet: FY 2015 Lincln Service (Chicag-St. Luis): 576,705 Amtrak-perated state-wned equipment includes 110 railrad passenger cars, 23 lcmtives and five Cascades Service trainsets. In December 2012, 135 miles f right-f-way between Kalamaz and Dearbrn was purchased by the state f Michigan. It is perated and maintained (and in the future will be dispatched) by Amtrak, and is being imprved fr the state f Michigan as an integral part f ur Michigan District (which als includes the Amtrak-wned 95.6-mile segment f up t 110 mph (177 kph) track frm Prter, Ind., t Kalamaz). Much f this state-wned track will be upgraded fr service at speeds f up t 110 mph. Amtrak and the states f Michigan and Illinis are partners t reduce travel times by increasing maximum train speeds up t 110 mph wherever pssible n the Chicag Detrit and Chicag St. Luis crridrs. Currently, Amtrak trains are cruising at speeds up t 110 mph n 80.3 miles in Michigan and Indiana n the Chicag-Detrit crridr. As additinal track and signal wrk is cmpleted, mre segments n bth crridrs will experience speed increases, which will be phased in during late 2016 and early This will ultimately result in trip time reductins f nearly an hur n bth crridrs. Natinal Netwrk Services Amtrak perates 15 natinal netwrk trains whse rutes range in length frm 764 t 2,438 miles. These trains prvide service at nearly half f the statins in the Amtrak system and are the nly Amtrak trains in 23 f the 46 states in the netwrk. In FY 2015, the natinal netwrk rutes cmbined carried nearly 4.5 millin passengers. Amtrak is the nly intercity passenger transprtatin service in an increasing number f cmmunities as intercity bus and airline peratrs abandn small and mid-sized cities. The daily Silver Meter (New Yrk-Miami) carried 346,097 passengers in FY Cntract Cmmuter Services Amtrak is ne f the largest peratrs f cntract cmmuter services in Nrth America; currently, Amtrak prvides either services and/r access fr 13 cmmuter agencies. Amtrak cntinues t receive new Amtrak Cities Sprinter (ACS- 64) electric lcmtives and new natinal netwrk, single level cars that are part f a 130 car rder. A train pulled by a new Amtrak Cities Sprinter (ACS-64) electric lcmtive (l) and the Acela Express meet at Baltimre. In 2016, Amtrak will annunce a cntract t acquire the mst technlgically advanced high-speed trainsets ever t perate in Nrth America fr the next generatin f Acela Express service. (near Orland), is the lngest passenger train in the wrld, with tw engines and 40-plus passenger rail cars and vehicle carriers. Since the beginning, even-numbered trains have traveled nrth and east. Oddnumbered trains travel suth and west. Amng the exceptins are Amtrak's Pacific Surfliners, which use the ppsite numbering system inherited frm the Santa Fe Railway, sme Empire Service trains and the Dwneaster trains between Brunswick, Maine, and Bstn. Psitive Train Cntrl Amtrak is a leader in the installatin f Psitive Train Cntrl (PTC), a safety technlgy designed t match train speed t track cnditins fr imprved safety. PTC prvides an added layer f safety n tp f the cab signal and Autmatic Train Cntrl safety systems already in place. In December 2015, Amtrak activated PTC n track between New Yrk and Washingtn, D.C., cmpleting installatin n mst Amtrak-wned infrastructure n the NEC spine. PTC has been installed between Bstn and New Haven since The nly exceptins are seven miles, all f which are lcated in r adjacent t terminal areas where trains mve slwer and Autmatic Train Cntrl systems are in service. Amtrak is scheduled t activate PTC n the mile Keystne Crridr (Philadelphia-Harrisburg) in February Since 2002, PTC has been installed and perating alng the 95.6 miles f track Amtrak wns in Michigan and Indiana (Prter, Ind.-Kalamaz, Mich.). Amtrak is als wrking n installatin f PTC n ther lines, including the 60.5-mile Springfield line (New Haven, Cnn.-Springfield, Mass.); the leased, 94-mile Hudsn line (Pughkeepsie, N.Y.-Hffmans, N.Y.
