1 United States Department of Agriculture Foreign Agricultural Service Circular Series FOP 6-09 e 2009 Brazil s Soybean Oil Exports Squeezed by Rising Biodiesel Demand Soybean Oil Exports and Industrial Use MMT / / / / /2009 Ind Use MY Exports Bazil s soybean oil exports are expected to decline sharply as the government announced a further increase in biodiesel admixtures. This will lead to additional growth in industrial oil use (biodiesel and other non-food uses) and lower exportable supplies. Further complicating the picture is the heightened foreign demand for Brazil s soybeans in response to significant crop losses in Argentina and Paraguay. Fewer beans and reduced crush means less soybean oil production, particularly late 2009 and early 2010, when soybean supplies are expected to be nearly exhausted. This will provide additional opportunities for US exporters. Approved by the World Agricultural Outlook Board/USDA

2 PRICES U.S. soybean export bids, FOB Gulf, in the first week in e averaged $473 per ton, the highest level since August last year. The sharp rise in export prices is primarily attributed to tightening stocks of old crop driven by unusually large exports to China for this time of year. As of week-ending May 28, 2009, U.S. soybean sales commitments (outstanding 200 sales plus accumulated exports) to China totaled 18.5 million tons, compared to 13.5 million a year ago. Total commitments to the world amounted to 33.7 million tons compared to 30.0 million the same period last year. TRADE CHANGES IN U.S. Gulf/FOB ($/Metric ton) Aug-07 U.S. Gulf Soybean Export Bids U.S. soybean exports are boosted 0.3 million tons to a record 34.0 million due to continued strong sales, primarily to China. Argentina s soybean exports are slashed 2.0 million tons to 5.4 million with worsening crop prospects. Brazil s soybean exports are boosted 1.0 million tons to 27.2 million spurred by reduced competition from Argentina and strong demand from China. China s soybean imports are boosted 1.3 million tons to 38.8 million with estimated strong imports in recent months. EU-27 rapeseed imports are raised 0.3 million tons to 3.1 million as large imports from Australia continue. Oct-07 Dec-07 Feb-08 Apr Aug-08 Oct-08 Dec-08 Feb-09 Apr-09-09
