1 United States Department of Agriculture Foreign Agricultural Service Circular Series FOP 2-07 ruary 2007 Rising Coconut Oil Prices Foreshadow Tight Supplies in Coconut Oil Price: CIF Rotterdam $/MT May-06 Apr-06 Jul-06 Jun-06 Aug-06 Sep-06 Oct-06 Nov-06 Dec-06 Jan-07 Coconut oil prices have jumped 35 percent since June in anticipation of tight supplies in An active 2006 typhoon season in the Philippines resulted in a significant loss of coconut palms and consequent decline in oil production. Export availability could be further reduced by a 1 percent admixture requirement for biodiesel that will likely be derived from local oil stocks. Because the Philippines accounts for nearly half of the world s production of coconut oil and approximately 60 percent of exports, any reduction in supply will significantly impact world markets. Current world supplies are adequate to meet demand though the full impact will not be felt until later in the year. This could add additional pressure on prices if demand fails to respond to the higher prices. New coconut palms will be planted to replace those lost. However, with nearly 5 years required for new trees to mature and reach peak production, the recovery period will likely extend beyond 2007 and prices will remain elevated for an extended period. Vegetable oil prices have generally risen over the past 6 months which has also contributed to the rise in the price of coconut oil. Approved by the World Agricultural Outlook Board/USDA
