2 Performance Products OUR 40 YEARS OF RACING HERITAGE! Back in the late 60s the Cloyes engineering team, headed by Mr. Bob Bub, saw the surging popularity of the weekend racer and set out to develop products to service the race crowd. In 1970, Mr. Bub and his team developed and marketed the very fi rst True Roller Speed set. With its balanced and multi-keyway sprockets, hand-matched with a new chain featuring solid bushing type rollers, the True Roller set was designed for racing and changed the timing game forever. In this 1972 letter, Junior Johnson attributes the new Cloyes True Roller set to aiding in their win at Atlanta (with Bobby Allison driving). They won 10 races that year. The Cloyes name soon became known for the best racing timing set in the U.S. As racing grew both professionally and at the enthusiast level, the Cloyes line of High Performance cam drives grew with it. Over the years, Cloyes engineers have collaborated on projects with some of the legendary names in racing names like Hendrick, Roush, Yates, Dorton, Mondello, as well as the major racing programs at GM, Ford, Mopar, and Mercury Marine. As competitors came into the market with copy-cat speed sets, we needed to take it up a notch. In 1992, Cloyes developed and patented the Hex-A-Just True Roller. Hex-A-Just was an industry fi rst, allowing an engine builder to easily adjust valve timing with the turn of an allen wrench, saving hours on the dyno or at the track. We soon added our Quick Button 2 pc Timing Cover allowing easy access to the timing adjustment. We now have over fi ve patents that compliment our Hex-A-Just system, which remains the premier adjustable timing set on the market. Cloyes Wins Indy!! Cloyes helped power Arie Luyendyk s winning car at the 1997 Indianapolis 500. This was the fi rst race featuring the Olds Aurora racing engine. Because of our close ties to GM, we were asked to make the timing set for their entries in the new Indy Racing League. Until its demise in 2006, all the Pontiac Firebirds running in the IROC Series (International Race of Champions) were equipped with a Cloyes True Roller set. More recently, we ve made special timing sets for the prototype engines you see running the 24 Hour races at Lemans, Sebring and Daytona. Over the past 40 years, it has been our innovation and attention to detail that has set us apart from the rest. Our monster trucks put these components to the test as we run high temperatures in our motors during the 90 second to 3 minute freestyle competitions and during racing. In the 27 years we have been racing monster trucks we haven t come across a roller chain set that lasts as long with little stretch as Cloyes. We also like the adjustability of the cam sprocket which enables us to dial our cam degree in easier than other brands. This engine is unique in that the individual bank valve trains are controlled by two separate chains and cam sprockets. The patented Cloyes Hex-A-Just system allows you to quickly make adjustments to balance the right and left banks and meet any custom cam specifi cations required to maximize your engines output. This is not a two-piece sprocket design. This exclusive Hex-A-Just product is a one-piece sprocket design that functions in the same way as the OE confi guration. It utilizes a stainless steel adjuster plate of specifi ed hardness and thickness that replaces the OE cam sprocket washer. Wide tolerances are an inherent flaw with any mass produced OE part. This is corrected by the fact that our sprockets are precision machined from premium billet steel on our state-of-the-art CNC equipment. Special care is taken to tolerance critical features (bore fitment, keyway fitment, timing angle, etc.) for each high performance sprocket manufactured. All sprockets are then induction hardened and oil-quenched using our in-house multi-stage heat treat process. The dynamometer graph shows noticeable torque and horsepower gains as a result of corrected camshaft positions from a simple bolt-on. Your additional fi ne tuning results in maximum gains. 31 TECH INFO - TIMING CHAINS The racing world has different levels of performance and the same is true of the performance parts world. There are different levels of speed sets also, and it is important to match the set to your needs. As a general rule, you want to upgrade your timing set as you upgrade the rest of your valve train components. Within our own product line, we offer two different levels of speed sets - STREET and RACE. The factors that separate them are sprocket material, heat treatment, chain type and level, matching, and adjustability. See page 32 for a quick reference feature comparison. all ChaINs are NOT CREaTED EQUal Probably the most critical part of your timing set is the Timing Chain. Key requirements to a quality chain are the component materials and the manufacturing processes. Each chain component: pin, bushing, roller, and link perform a specifi c function and therefore require a particular material and heat treatment for each of their individual needs. Each component is designed to provide excellent wear properties as well as ductility to endure shock loads. This balancing of both hardness and ductility can only be accomplished by controlled manufacturing processes. SEAMED vs. SEAMLESS ROLLERS This seemingly endless and age-old debate really has no merit. The fact is, it doesn t matter if a roller is seamed or seamless as long as the proper material, heat treatment, and manufacturing processes are implemented. Our standard Street True Roller chain, which we manufacture with seamless rollers, has proven to be an excellent entry level performer. The Cloyes Premium True Roller chain, which has seamed rollers and is used on all our premium race sets, is racing and winning at tracks across the country and around the world. The extremely high-end Cloyes Z chain, a new option on our LS applications, also has seamed rollers and is being used by many of the leading 24 hour endurance teams. So in conclusion, it s less about the seamed or seamless roller, but more about the material used, the manufacturing processes, and a commitment to quality. How to Advance or Retard Valve Timing Cloyes offers several different options to adjust your valve timing: HEX-A-JUST With the simple turn of an allen wrench or fuel pump eccentric, our patented Hex-A-Just systems allow you to infinitely adjust valve timing within a window of + / - 6 degrees.
