8 RESIDUAL CURRENT DEVICES (RCD S) CLIPSAL RCD s are designed to open automatically when an earth leakage fault occurs, the fault can either be between phase and earth and/or between neutral and earth. The fault shall be greater than the calibrated sensitivity of the respective RCD (0, 30, 00, 300 or 500mAmps). The RCD thereby prevents fires, electrolytic corrosion and loss of energy, as well as protecting human life. In the case of an earth fault, some of the current takes another path. The result is then less than zero, which is detected by the RCD, and when the difference is in excess of the calibrated difference the switch opens on all poles. Fig.. shows an appliance connected to earth. Under normal circumstances, when there is no fault in the circuit, the current between phase and neutral is as shown, and the body of the appliance is safe to human contact, since there is no current flowing through it. When an installation fault occurs in the appliance, the current path is altered radically as shown in Fig. 2. We now find that the current s normal path is partly through the appliance and partly through the person and the earth connection. The current intensity that passes through one of these paths is dependent on the voltage between the appliance and earth and the resistance in the human body. The combination of the intensity of the current and the time factor can cause a fatal accident. T(ms) A B The three main components in the RCD are: - The Core transformer which detects the fault. - The Relay which is the heart of the RCD is current-activated and inducts the transformer, which in its turn affects the mechanical action. - The Mechanism which opens and closes the contacts. Figure 3 (ma) eff.rms A current time diagram is defined in the norm CIE 479/74. This diagram is reproduced in Fig. 3 where also the characteristics of Clipsal RCD s for 0mAmps, and 30mAmps, are shown. A Sensitivity for 0mAmps B Sensitivity for 30mAmps Zone : Normally no effect. Zone 5: Risk for heart fibrillation (over 50%) Generally the RCD s are sensitive to transient phenomena that occur in the following circumstances: - Where there are long cables with high capacitance connected to the earth. - As a result of thunder storms. - When there are other circuits with high voltage, arcs and high-peak values. These can cause nuisance tripping of the RCD with consequential damage. ALL CLIPSAL RCD s have transient protection which reduces these effects to a minimum. Produced according to BSEN

17 MAIN CHARACTERISTICS OF NEW CL & CK CONTACTORS RANGE Contactors complied with new international standard IEC-947. This standard is specially tough in contactor tests to ensure even better performance. Great flexibility is achieved thanks to the fact that complete range of contactors uses the same accessories. Three coil terminals. Electronic interface modules, electronic timers and surge suppressors which are connected direct to the coil without cables and which can be used together with front and/or side mounted auxiliary contact blocks. The whole of the new range is also available with DC coils. The overall size of basic contactors is not increased in DC coil versions. The whole range of contactors can be mounted on standard 35mm DIN rail. Double clamp terminals can accommodate simultaneously two different sizes of cable or two different size of cable terminals. Eight auxiliary contacts can be pulled in by the contactor, either by mounting six front blocks (NO or NC) and one side block (2NO or NO + NC) or four side blocks, two each side.
