11 ENDUR 09 Selectin f battery size Selectin f Battery Size The fllwing examples are designed t illustrate the methd f determining which ABT ENDUR TFT Frnt Terminal unit will supprt yur required duty lad. Cnstant current discharge EXAMPLE A. T demnstrate cnstant current calculatin and als the effect f temperature. A nminal 48V telecmmunicatins system using a 24 cell battery and requiring 18.5 amps cnstant current will perate satisfactrily at a minimum battery terminal vlts level f 42 vlts. Calculate the battery type required fr 5 hurs standbyduratinnthebasisf: (a) 20 C perating temperature (b)0 Cperatingtemperature METHD (1) Minimum allwable vlts per cell 42 vlts = 1.75Vpc 24 cells (2) Hence, cell perfrmance requirement is 18.5 amps Cnstant current t 1.75Vpc (3) By reference t cnstant current perfrmance tablerelatingt1.75vltspercelllevel(see page 6): (a) at 20 C TFT unit size is smallest available size t use (19.2 amps available). An inverter system requires a D.C. cnstant pwer inputf90kwinthevltagerange451vlts maximum, 317 vlts minimum. Calculate the ptimum battery size required fr peratin fr a 10 min standby perid. METHD (1) Number f cells = 451/2.27Vpc = 199 cells. (2) Minimum vlt per cell 317/199 = 1.6Vpc. (3) Watts per cell = watts / 199 cells = 452watts per cell. (4) Hence cell perfrmance requirement is 452 watts t 1.6Vpc at 20 C. 12 Technlgy PrinciplefVRLAbatteries During charging f cnventinal lead acid battery, electrlysis f water ccurs at the final stage and hydrgen generates frm the negative plates and xygen frm the psitive plates. This causes water lss and peridic watering is needed. Hwever, evlutin f xygen and hydrgen gases des nt ccur simultaneusly, because the recharge f the psitive plates is nt as efficient as the negative nes. This means that xygen is evlved frm the psitive plate befre hydrgen is evlved frm the negative plate.at the same time that xygen is evlved frm the psitive plate, a substantial amunt f highly active spngy lead exists n the negative plate befre it cmmences hydrgen evlutin. Therefre, prviding xygen can be transprted t the negative plates, cnditins are ideal fr a rapid reactin between lead and xygen, i.e. xygen is electrchemically reduced n the negative plate accrding t the fllwing frmula, - + 2e +2H +1/2 H 2 2 andthefinalprductiswater. The current flwing thrugh the negative plate drives this reactin instead f hydrgen evlutin which ccur inacnventinalbattery. This prcess is called gas recmbinatin. If this prcess is 100% efficient n water wuld be lst frm the battery. By careful design and selectin f battery cmpnents, gas recmbinatin efficiency is between 95% t 99%. ENDUR Technlgy 10 Principle f the xygen reductin cycle Cnventinal cell xygen and hydrgen escape t the atmsphere Endur TFT xygen frm the psitive plate transfers t the negative and recmbines t frm water Recmbinatin efficiency Recmbinatin efficiency is determined under specific cnditins by measuring the vlume f hydrgen emitted frm the battery and cnverting this int its ampere hur equivalent. This equivalent value is then subtracted frmthettalamperehurstakenbythebatteryduringthetestperid,andtheremainderisthebattery's recmbinatin efficiency and is usually expressed as a percentage. As recmbinatin is never 100%, sme hydrgen gas is emitted frm batteries thrugh the safety valve. 13 ENDUR 11 perating perating Characteristics The ENDUR TFT Frnt Terminal units shuld be charged using cnstant ptential chargers. Flat vltage At nrmal rm temperature (20 C ), the recmmendedflatvltageisequalt2.27vltsper cell. T ptimise battery perfrmance it is recmmended that the flat vltage is adjusted fr rm ambient temperatures in accrdance with the fllwing table. Crrectin factrs fr capacity at different temperatures are shwn in the fllwing table, the reference temperature being 20 C. Under these cnditins a recharge will be cmpleted in apprximately 72 hurs. Charging current AdischargedVRLAbatterywillacceptahigh recharge current, but fr thse seeking a mre ecnmical charging system a current limit f 0. 2 C (A) is adequate. 10 Nte:Fracmpletelydischargedbattery,80%f thecapacityisreplacedinapprximately: 10hursat0.1C 6hursat0. 2 C 5 hurs n current limit applied Fast recharge Increasing the charge vltage t 14.4~14.7 vlts per battery can reduce recharge time and it is pssible, depending n the depth f discharge, t halve the recharge time. Under these cnditins, hwever, the chargemustbemnitredandmustbeterminated when the charge current remains reasnably steady fr3cnsecutivehursafterthevltagelimithas been reached. At the beginning f charge the current

14 perating Instructins and Guidelines Accidental deep discharge e.g. (1)Dischargeatalwercurrentfralngertime than the riginal system specificatin. (2) Failure f the charging system. (3) Battery nt recharged immediately after a discharge. When a battery is cmpletely discharged: (1) The utilisatin f the sulphuric acid in the electrlyte is ttal and the electrlyte nw cnsists nly f water. During recharge this cnditin may prduce metallic dendrites which can penetrate the separatr and cause a shrt circuit in a cell. (2) The sulphatin f the plate is at its maximum and the internal resistance f the cell is als at its maximum. Thebatteryshuldberechargedunderacnstant ptentialf2.27vltspercellwiththecurrent limited t a maximum f 0.2 C 10(A) in rder t prevent excessive internal heating. Fr instance, fr a Endur TFT the maximum charge current is 21 amps. If the sulphatin f the cell/battery is extensive, then the recharge f the battery may require mre than 96 hurs. Nte:Deepdischargingwillprduceapremature deteriratin f the battery and a nticeable reductin in the life expectency f the battery. Flat charge ripple Excessive ripple n the D.C. supply acrss a battery has the effect f reducing life and perfrmance. It is recmmended therefre, that vltage regulatin acrss the system including the lad, but withut the battery cnnected, under steady state cnditins, shall be better than 1% between 5% and 100% lad. Transientandtherrippletypeexcursinscanbe accmmdated prvided that, with the battery discnnected,but the lad cnnected, the system peak t peak vltage including the regulatin limits, falls within 2.5% f the recmmended flat vltage f the battery. Under n circumstances shuld the current flwing thrughthebatterywhenitisperatingunderflat cnditins, reverse int the discharge mde. Electr-Magnetic Cmpatibility (EMC) prducts are cvered by the EMC statement in EN which reads as fllws: Rechargeable cells r batteries are nt sensitive t nrmal electrmagnetic disturbances, and therefre n immunity tests shall be required. Freestanding rechargeable cells r batteries electrically islated frm any assciated electrical system are fr all practical purpses electrmagnetically inert, and therefre the requirements fr electrmagnetic cmpatibility shall be deemed t be satisfied. Nte:Itshuldbentedthatrechargeablecellsr batteries are part f an electrical system, and the mannerinwhichtheyareusedculdinvkethe requirements f the electrmagnetic cmpatibility upn that system. In such cases, the requirements f electrmagnetic cmpatibility shall be accmmdated by the design f the system. Maintenance Every mnth, check that the ttal vltage at the batteryterminalsis(nx2.27v)fratemperature f 20 C. N=thenumberfcellsinthebatteryand2.27V = 20 C flat vltage. nce a year, take a reading f the individual blc vltagesinthebattery.avariatinf 4.5%n individualvltagesfrmtheaveragevltage is acceptable. The system must be checked nce r twice a year. New and ld batteries cannt be used tgether. The batteries f varius specificatins and frm different manufacturers cannt be used tgether. 15 ENDUR 13 Installatin Installatin and Cmmissining Charge Warning ABT Endur TFT Frnt Terminal units are already charged when delivered. They shuld be unpacked with care. Avid shrt circuiting terminals f ppsite plarity as these units are capable f discharging at a very high current, especially if the lid r the cntainer is damaged. Unpacking It is advisable t unpack all the mnblcs and accessries befre cmmencing t erect and nt t unpack and erect mnblcs by mnblcs. All items shuld be carefully checked against the accmpanying advice ntes t ascertain if any are missing. Advise the Sales Department f any discrepancies. A rigid plastic insulating cver is prvided which ttally prtects the unit terminals. This is factry fitted t all prducts f the range and there is n need t remve it until access t the terminals is required. Setting up the battery stands The structure shuld be assembled in accrdance with instructins supplied with the equipment. T level the stand use the adjustable insulating feet. Munting in a cabinet Ensure that the cabinet: Is sufficiently strng t cpe with the weight f the battery. Is suitably insulated Is naturally ventilated Cnnecting the mnblcs Trque setting Tightenthenutsrbltsttherecmmendedlevels f trque indicated n the prduct label. Always use insulated tls fr fitting and trquing up battery cnnectins. In series Thenumberfcellsinseries(N)willntaffectthe selected flat vltage per cell. Therefre, charging flat vltage =NxCellflatVltage N special circuit arrangements are required. In parallel Using cnstant vltage chargers, and ensuring that the cnnectins made between the charger and the batteries have the same electrical resistance, n specialarrangementshavetbemadefrbatteries in parallel. Althugh n special circuit arrangements are required, where the parallel cnnectin is made at the charger r distributin bard, t avid ut f step cnditins,the bus bar run length and the area f crss sectin shuld be designed s that the circuit resistance value fr each string is equal within limits ± General recmmendatins D nt wear clthing f synthetic material t avid static generatin. Use nly a clean sft damp clth fr cleaning the mnblcs. D nt use chemicals r detergents. Use insulated tls. Cmmence installatin at the least accessible pint. Cnsult the drawing fr the crrect psitin f the mnblc's ples. Cmmissining charge Ensure that the batteries will be perated in a clean envirnment. Befre use, the batteries shuld be charged at a cnstant flat vltage adjusted accrding t the ambient temperature, e.g ~13.74V/ battery at 20 C fr 48 t 96 hurs r, alternatively, a vltage f 14.4~14.7V/battery at 20 C can be used t reduce the cmmissining perid frm 24 t 15~20 hurs. Where the batteries have been stred under harsh cnditins, this increased vltage recharge is particularly effective.

16 Battery Strage Strage cnditins the battery shuld stre in a dry, clean,ventilated and preferably cl lcatin. Avid placing batteries in clse prximity t heat surces f any kind. Strage time As the batteries are supplied charged, strage time is limited. In rder t easily charge the batteries after prlnged strage, it is advisable nt t stre batteries fr mre than: 6mnthsat20C 3mnthsat30C 6weeksat40C Battery state f charge The battery state f charge can be determined by measuring the pen-circuit vltage f cells in rest psitin fr 24 hurs at 20 C. State f charge the pen-circuit vltage(v/cell) 100% % 2.15 Battery Strage ENDUR 14 60% % % 2.03 pen circuit vltage variatin with temperature is 2.5mV/cell per 10 C. Recharge f stred batteries A refreshing charge shall be perfrmed after this time at V/ battery at 20 C fr 48 t 96 hurs. A current limit is nt essential, but fr ptimum charge efficiency the current utput f the charger can be limited t 20% f the 10-hur rated capacity. The necessity f a refreshing charge can als be determined by measuring the pen circuit vltage f a stred battery. Refreshing charge is advised if the vltage drps belw 2.10 vlts per cell. Failure t bserve these cnditins may result in greatly reduced capacity and service life.
