4 SUMMARY The primry im of the Arknss Cotton Vriety Test is to provide unbised dt regrding the gronomic performnce of cotton vrieties in the mjor cotton growing res in Arknss. This informtion helps seed delers estblish mrketing strtegies nd ssists producers in choosing vrieties to plnt. In this wy the nnul test fcilittes the inclusion of new, improved genetic mteril into Arknss cotton production. The 1999 test hd 67 entries (including 25 trnsgenic genotypes nd 35 first-yer entries), which were evluted t six sites in estern Arknss. The presence of four trnsgenic nd five first-yer entries mong the top 10 yielding entries suggests tht improvement is being ccomplished in vrietl development. This report lso includes the Mississippi County Vriety Test (n on-frm evlution of selected vrieties) nd on-frm vriety trils conducted by the Coopertive Extension Service. 6 ARKANSAS COTTON VARIETY TESTS 1999 F.M. Bourlnd, N.R. Benson, J.M. Hornbeck, nd C.D. Cpps, Jr. INTRODUCTION The purpose of the University of Arknss Cotton Vriety Test is to provide n unbised comprison of cotton vrieties. Informtion included is intended to fcilitte vriety selection by identifying the potentil dptbility of vrieties to prticulr cotton growing regions of the stte. Recognizing the genetic differences mong entries is the ultimte gol of the test; therefore, ll vrieties re treted the sme wy. No specilized production inputs were implemented with respect to geneticlly enhnced vrieties. Roundup-tolernt vrieties, Buctril-resistnt vrieties, Bcillus thuringiensis (Bt) vrieties, nd conventionl vrieties were ll treted eqully with respect to weed nd insect control. Coopertive efforts between the Arknss Agriculturl Experiment Sttion, the Coopertive Extension Service, nd Arknss cotton growers resulted in systems -type vriety trils. Lrge, onfrm comprisons of geneticlly enhnced vrieties were conducted cross the stte nd provided the flexibility to test vrietl differences under Roundup, Bollgrd, nd conventionl systems for cotton production (see Appendix). MATERIALS AND METHODS The 1999 Arknss Cotton Vriety Test ws conducted t the Northest Reserch nd Extension Center t Keiser; the Delt Brnch Sttion t Clrkedle; the Cotton Brnch Experiment Sttion t Mrinn; nd the Southest Brnch Experiment Sttion t Rohwer. A test with irrigtion ws conducted t ech site, nd test without irrigtion ws conducted t Clrkedle nd Mrinn. One on-frm vriety test ws conducted in Mississippi County, locted in northest Arknss. In generl, culturl prctices followed were those recommended by the University of Arknss Extension Service. Test plots t the Mrinn loction were in close proximity to studies tht required ner insect-free conditions. Thus insecticide pplictions t Mrinn were initited t much lower insect thresholds thn would normlly be recommended under Extension Service recommendtions. Entries were seprted into those tested for the first time (first-yer entries) nd those hving been entered in the Arknss Cotton Vriety Test the preceding yer. All vrieties were plnted in two-row plots rnging in length from 40 to 50 ft. Vrieties

7 AAES Reserch Series 473 entered in the Mississippi County test were plnted in six-row plots running the full length of the field (pproximtely 1270 ft). Tests were rrnged in rndomized complete block nd replicted four times. Although exct inputs vried cross loctions, ll vrieties were treted eqully within testing site (Tble 1 6). All plots were mchine-hrvested, nd yield per cre ws clculted nd sttisticlly nlyzed. Dt Collected Lef Pubescence: Once per seson, visul estimtes of lef pubescence were mde on 10 plnts from ech vriety. Lef pubescence dt were collected from two of the four replictions t ech loction nd included rting individul plnts from 1 to 7 (1 = smooth nd 7 = very hiry). Mturity: Strting t pproximtely first flower, nodes bove white flower (NAWF) vlues were collected from ll plots t ech loction. NAWF vlues were collected pproximtely once per week until ech vriety hd reched cutout (NAWF = 5). Prior to defolition, estimtes of the percentge of open bolls were mde for ech plot. Rtings were collected from ll loctions nd included visul estimtion of the percentge of open bolls on ech plot. Plnt Height: Plnt height mesurements were collected for ech vriety prior to hrvest. Averge plnt heights for vrieties were determined by mesuring from the soil surfce to the top of one verge-sized plnt per plot. Lint Frction nd Fiber Dt: Prior to mechnicl hrvest, hnd-hrvested smple of 50 open bolls (25 from ech of two rows) were obtined from two replictions t ech loction. The 50 boll smples were ginned (lb gin without the use of lint cleners) to determine the lint frction (the proportion of lint to seedcotton). Fiber properties were determined using the HVI clssifiction system. Lint Yield: Seedcotton yield per plot ws converted to seedcotton yield per cre nd then multiplied by lint frction (determined by vriety nd loction) to estimte lint per cre. Yield Comprison: Uncontrolled vrition is inherent to collection of vrietl performnce dt, prticulrly yield dt. In ddition to genetic differences, vrition mong vrieties my be due to slight differences in soil, pest, or climtic conditions within field; vrious interctions with specific mngement; or rndom chnce. Sttistics llow users to define the degree of uncontrolled vrition nd to interpret dt. The sttisticl tool used to compre mens in these tests ws Fisher s Protected Lest Significnt Difference (LSD) Test. An LSD ws clculted when the F-vlue from nlysis of vrince ws significnt. Vrietl yields re considered significntly different if the difference between the men yields of two vrieties is greter thn the LSD vlue. Differences smller thn the LSD my hve occurred becuse of chnce or uncontrolled vrition nd re therefore considered not significntly different. Additionl estimtes of vrition re provided by mesures of R-squred nd coefficient of vrition (CV). R-squred (times 100) indictes the percentge of vrition tht is explined by defined sources of vrition. Confidence in dt increses s the R-squred vlue increses. Generlly, the meningfulness of differences mong mens is questionble when dt hve R-squred vlues of less thn 50%. To lrge extent, confidence in dt becomes greter s CV declines. Since CV is function of the men of prmeter, R-squred is better tool for compring the precision of different experiments. Environmentl Conditions: Environmentl conditions vried cross the stte (Tble 7). Tempertures were bove the 30-yer verge for Arknss, while rinfll ws well below the verge for the sme period. RESULTS Tbles 1 6 Tbles 1 6 represent culturl inputs nd estimted production costs for vriety trils t Keiser, Clrkedle (with nd without irrigtion), Mrinn (with nd without irrigtion), nd Rohwer. 2
