Lndivr Extension Entomologist nd Reserch Agronomist Corpus Christi, Texs MATERIALS/METHODS: Two tests were estblished to evlute cotton vrieties. One test consisted of 8 trnsgenic B.t. vrieties nd the other test consisted of 15 vrieties; two trnsgenic B.t. cultivrs (DPL 32B nd PM 1215B) were included in both tests. Vrieties were replicted 3 times in RCB design in 36-row by 5,775 ft plots (15.1 cres). Rows were spced on 38-inch centers. Three John Deere 7300 MxEmerge 12-row ir plnters were used to plnt 4.4 seed/row ft on 11 nd 12 Mr in field tht hd been in sorghum in Stnd estblishment rtes were mesured 9 nd 16 dys fter plnting. Seventeen John Deere pickers including 4 nd 6 row mchines were used to hrvest plots on 5-8 Aug. Seed cotton from ech plot ws stored in seprte modules. A seed cotton smple ws obtined from ech corner of ll modules to determine lint turnout percentge nd fiber chrcteristics. These smples were processed on 10-sw Egle Lbortory mchine nd lint ws sent to the Interntionl Textile Center, Lubbock, Texs for fiber nlysis. Module weights were then used to determine lint yield bsed on percentge turn-out chieved in the lbortory gin but before yields were clculted, the lb gin turnout redings were uniformly djusted to mtch chievement of the commercil gin. In ddition, modules were weighed nd ginned seprtely by vriety so tht fiber chrcteristics nd qulity fctors could lso be mesured on ll bles processed by commercil ginning (these smples were in ddition to single smples from the modules). All dt were nlyzed by ANOVA nd LSD. RESULTS/DISCUSSION: Tbles 1 nd 2 provide dt on seedling emergence mesured 9 nd 16 dys fter plnting (DAP) using 45,000 plnts per cre s the optimum popultion (the percentge of optimum stnd chieved 9 DAP is listed). Although there were lrge differences, yield rnkings did not necessrily follow the plnt estblishment rte. However, none of the low yielding vrieties exceeded 25% optimum plnt stnd 9 DAP in the 15-entry vriety test but the sme trend did not occur in the trnsgenic B.t. test. Tble 3 lists dt from the trnsgenic B.t cotton vriety comprison bsed on hnd smples tken from ech module. Except for lint yield differences (LSD=53.6 lb), few striking observtions were obtined, even though there were sttisticl differences mong vrieties for ll fiber chrcteristic prmeters but strength. Lint vlues bsed on fiber chrcteristics from ll bles from ech of 3 modules (Tble 4) best exhibit the true vlue of cotton production on n cre bsis. Lint vlue differences rnged from high of $ to low of $ per pound in the B.t. cotton evlution. Fiber chrcteristics bsed on hnd smples from modules nd yield dt for the 15-entry test contining 13 conventionl nd 2 trnsgenic B.t. cotton cultivrs re provided in Tble 5. Sttisticl differences were found for every prmeter mesured. The probbility level nd LSD (P=0.05) re given for ech prmeter. Noteworthy results included (1) three vrieties with micronire redings of 5.0 or more (SG125, PHM1560 nd 34

2 STV474), (2) longest fiber in the test (numericlly) for the FM 832 vriety nd (3) greter strength (numericlly) for the FM 832 vriety. Surprisingly, only 27.2 lb lint/cre ws required to sttisticlly seprte lint yields (P=0.05). Mjor differences in lint vlue were detected in the 15-entry vriety comprison bsed on dt from ll bles produced from ech of the 3 plots (15.1 cres/plot). The difference in lint vlue mong vrieties ws more thn $0.05/pound.
