GWRRA Texas Chapter G - Tomball, Texas V O L U M E 3 1, I S S U E 2 F E B R U A R Y From Phil s Files Hello Chapter G and Friends! February 2019 is here and spring is right around the corner and will be full of events. The Road Captains last meeting hosted a Honda rep and they are really wanting to get involved and support us in some way. Brian Norwood suggested a Goldwing meetup at our local dealer as a way to re-connect with all our fellow riders and gather support from Honda. March is the Texas State Railroad ride to Palestine, TX. We will be staying 2 nights, riding the train and taking in the sights. We are hoping to have plenty of day trips this spring and ideas are always welcome. Let s all ride safe! 4 TEXAS RIDER EDUCATION UPDATE February 2019 Randy and Kathy Reese 1007 Parkcrest Ct., Pflugerville, Tx (512) (512) Motorcycle Rider Course Options Hello Texas Riders! One of the best activities you can do for yourself in 2019 is to take a riding course to hone and reinforce your skills on the street. GWRRA offers 10 different courses to help you achieve this. I know some of you might be thinking, Yeah, but I can t ever find a class being offered close to me! I know a lot of you take the courses to keep your Levels current (and I strongly support that) but did you know there are a lot more classes out there that can also be counted for the Levels program? Following is the list of Approved Rider Courses for use in the GWRRA Levels Program. The first group of courses have a classroom and range component and should be taken every 3 years to maintain Levels. Riding Courses accepted for GWRRA Levels The following courses may be taken every 3 years consecutively for Levels 2 UP 3WBRC AORC ARC BRC CMSP CSC ESCS ESCT MORE MSFARC SRC STAR TC Co Rider participating in a Rider Course (GWRRA) Trike Rider Course (MSF) Add-On Riding Course (GWRRA) Advanced Rider Course (GWRRA) Beginner Rider Course (MSF) California Motorcyclist Safety Program Canadian Safety Council Evergreen Safety Council Sidecar Evergreen Safety Council Trike Ohio State Program Advanced Rider Course (MSF) Sidecar Rider Course (GWRRA) Idaho State Program Two Wheel Trailering Course (GWRRA) February 2019 Page 4
TEXAS RIDER EDUCATION UPDATE February continued- Riding Courses accepted for GWRRA Levels - continued TC ARC TC INT TRC TTRC VRC Total Control Advanced Rider Clinic (Lee Parks) Total Control Intermediate Rider Clinic Trike Rider Course (GWRRA) Trike w/ Trailer Rider Course (GWRRA) Vanguard Rider Course (GWRRA) The courses listed below may be used in the Levels program, but the next rider course must be a course listed from above. These courses are essentially Track Day courses and must be alternated with a more traditional course that covers all the topics of safer riding. The following courses may be taken every 6 years, alternated with courses above for Levels ARC R BBBRC BRC 2 BRC 2SP BRCGRP OHPSR RLAP SPCW SSKLS STRR TRC R Advanced Rider Course Recert (GWRRA) Basic Bike Bonding Course (MSF) MSF License Waiver Basic Rider Course 2 Skills Practice Basic Rider Course Small Group Oklahoma Highway Patrol Safe Riders Ride Like a Pro (Jerry Palladino) Streetmasters Precision Cornering Workshop John Delvecchio's Street Skills MSF Street Rider Course (MSF) Trike Rider Course Recert (GWRRA) Co Riders may of course also take the Co Rider Seminar to maintain their levels. So, where do you find these classes? Texas Department of Public Safety has a comprehensive list of over 225 accredited riding course providers across Texas that include dealerships, colleges, and private providers as an interactive map at traininglocations/. Many of the providers use the MSF or Total Control curriculum. If you are interested in specific GWRRA class offerings, there is a calendar of riding courses, modules, and seminars offered around the country at Be sure to check our Texas District Calendar It has just been revamped and in addition to all of the chapter events that are turned into us we will post all course offerings as they are scheduled. If there are specific courses or classes you are interested in taking, please contact me (txed@gwrra-tx.org) and we ll do our best to find instructors to put on a class near you, at an Education Weekend, or at the District Rally. 6 Membership Enhancement By Jim & Teresa Cook Hello Gulfwingers! What a great little sample of Spring we had this week. I see trees starting to sprout and redbuds actually being fooled by Mother nature and since the groundhog did not see his shadow I expect the yellow pollen billowing from the pine trees to once more coat everything inside and out and I will again exclaim, what a wonderful time of year to own a yellow Goldwing. Six of us had a great time last Thursday at the Houston Karting Center in Conroe. The last thing Erin told me was to TAKE PICTURES! We were having so much fun that I forgot all about it, Sorry Erin, She does such a great job with the newsletter. Can t wait for the Train Ride Weekend next month in Palestine. If you have not yet got your reservations, better hurry it should be a great ride and a good time. Be sure to get out on your bike, have fun and be safe! Jim and Teresa Cook Membership Enhancement Coordinators Visitors and Guests We had 28 Chapter G members at the January meeting. We had a nice visit with former members Chris and Brenda Dillon, who came to talk about the Ride for Kids. And the Winner Is. 50/50 Drawing: Jim Cook Valley Ranch Gift Certificate: Sam Belinoski Bike Cover (donated by Greg Daniel): Tommy Nichols Oil Change at Honda of Houston: Steve Smith February 2019 Page 6
January Rides and Activities We had just two rides in January, with a total of 1,580 safe miles. On January 1, Philip led our annual Polar Bear Ride to Julio s Mexican Restaurant in Rosehill. It was a cool, overcast morning for a slow meandering ride through the backroads Waller and Montgomery counties, before making our way back to Rosehill for an excellent lunch. We had 20 people on 11 bikes, with a total of 770 safe miles. February 2019 Page 7
January Rides and Activities More pictures from the Polar Bear Ride February 2019 Page 8
January Rides and Activities On January 27, Philip led a ride to Dairy Queen in Hempstead. We took the long way to get to Reed s Prairie, then jumped on FM 362 to FM1488 into Hempstead. Since it was a cool morning, it was nice to get into the warm restaurant. We had 15 riders on 9 bikes, with 810 safe miles. February 2019 Page 9
New Assistant Chapter Directors Joe and Tammy Deluke At January s meeting, Philip announced that we have new Assistant Chapter Directors. Please welcome Joe and Tammy Deluke into their new position. We are so pleased to have them on the team, and look forward to their contributions to Chapter G. Polar Bear Ride Patches We handed out most of the patches at the January meeting, but still have some left for a couple of folks. We will have the patches at the February meeting. 11 2019 Spring District Education Weekend Mark your calendar now - Texas District is offering another District Education Weekend! It will be held on March 16 & 17 in Killeen at the same location as last year - the TAMU Central Texas Campus at 1001 Leadership Place. The Rider Course ranges will be held at Killeen Ellison High School, 909 Elms Road. Depending on number of classes and instructors available, classes will probably be offered from 8-5 Saturday and 9-1 on Sunday. Last year we offered 3 riding classes Full Trike course, Trike Recertification course, and Advanced Rider Recertification course, 2 Road Captain Courses, 2 Medic First Aid/CPR classes, 2 Co-Rider seminars, 2 Team Riding seminars, and 4 other seminars/modules. 67 persons from 9 chapters attended over Saturday and 1/2 day Sunday. We hope to have similar offerings this year once we have heard input from our Chapters and membership on what classes are needed - due Feb. 15. Look for a registration flyer by Feb 17 and a final schedule of offerings in early March. February 2019 Page 11
