Good Day, Chapter O Our dinner ride last month was a kind of a FLOP, thanks to John for not double checking the reservations. We met in the parking lot of BMC and headed out for dinner at The Catfish Lake only to find out they have never heard of GWRRA, John, Motorcycle, or Party. So, we turned around and headed to "The Special" in Bellevue. We were able to FLIP the FLOP into a good time. Even the fish eaters got their fix. As always food and friends = FUN! The March chapter meeting was successful and we had a nice turnout of members. A big THANK YOU goes out to Rodger and Marty for donating $25 to help The Corn Crib become sponsors at the $50 level. Finding new sponsors and obtaining payment can be time consuming. We introduced our new Chapter Challenge for Nebraska Historical Markers Collection. Look for more info on the website and below. Now is the time to start planning some routes to find Nebraska Historical Markers. We had our third Attendance Prize drawing (non-winning 50/50 members only) thanks to Robin for the handmade GWRRA trivet and coaster set. Our winner this month was Jim. March dinner ride is planned for Saturday, March 24th at 6:00 pm. at Farmer Brown s Steakhouse, in Waterloo, NE. We'll meet at the Kum and Go 196th and Center. Clutches out 5:30 pm. Hope everyone can join us. Please RSVP to: John and Cheryl either at or (please leave a message if no answer) by March 21st. Note: There will be an automatic gratuity added to your bill of 18%. Hope everyone can join us Times have changed! Opportunity Knocks!!!

Per the National Safety Council... "The Healthy Kids Day event is scheduled for SUNDAY, April 22nd from We have changed our plans a bit this year. The last few years we have seen less and less attendees bring their bikes so we have decided not to do the bike rodeo or the bike maintenance station. Instead of those programs we will be doing bike educational programs while the kids wait in line to receive a helmet. That said we would still love to have the Gold Wing Road Riders volunteer at our event I just wanted you to know that it will be a different format this year." I asked the National Safety Council if Chapter "O" members could set up a row of Motorcycles and a booth to provide Motorcycle Safety information. THEY SAID... "I spoke to our planning committee for Healthy Kids Day. We would love for you to bring your bikes and promote bike safety. We will have you on the street like we did last year. We are not able to provide any tables or chairs so if your group needs these, please bring them." Opportunity Knocks!!! CALLING ALL BIKERS!!! Healthy Kids Day! Here's a great opportunity for us to provide motorcycle safety information to the public, show off our bikes and have fun with meet and greet. We have enough safety pamphlets to hand out and a display, not to mention our banner. Here's another chance for us to show off to the community our fun, safety and knowledge (for FREE). All we need is your time. We ll plan to meet at Amato s at 8:30 AM for breakfast (if you want). Setup and instructions are at 10:00 AM and the event runs from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM. Make plans now to attend. Go to the website and register at: and fill out the 10 questions. You will note that there is a question where you can list an area that you want to be assigned or limitations. List GWRRA Motorcycle Safety at this question. Our April Chapter Dinner Ride/Fundraiser will be on April 25. Enjoy dinner at Pizza West located at McDermott Plaza, in La Vista between 5:30-8pm. Please be sure and tell your family and friends to mention Chapter O. Anyone who mentions Chapter O, Pizza West will donate 15% from their bill to the Chapter. This is an EASY way to help the chapter. Please help spread the word. NE/SD District Rally is in Valentine, NE, Will be Thursday Saturday, July and the Niobrara Lodge will be the host hotel, located at 803 US-20, Valentine, NE. (402) or (402) to get a room under our block rate, $100 for standard room, $110 for a suite. Valentine is a small town with big adventure. Things to do include; scenic river floats, Sand hills escapes, exciting events, cowboy culture, frontier history, fine dining and more!! Visit the Valentine website to see more.

Mark your Calendars for Sunday, December 9. One of our community services this year will be helping out Empty Tomb Ministries by providing a meal for the homeless community. This organization operates as a storefront church to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and to support the community with food, clothing & assistance. This event is for a good cause and we are hopeful for a large participation number. We ll have more information on this event as it becomes available. Any personal certification requirements for the GWRRA Rider Ed Levels Program can be discussed individually with me. We have some members with training due, and we would like to get set up with training dates to get everyone current. Feel free to join in the levels program at any time. As always we look forward to any new members or visiting guests at our meetings. We look forward to seeing you again next month at our next Chapter Meeting on Tuesday night, April 10 at 7:00pm. 6:00pm at the Millard Road House Thanks to all for the help and support you give. 6 Here are some great tips from the MSF website for this month s Safety Note. Rick& Robin QUICK TIPS: Guidelines For Riding With A Passenger On Your Motorcycle Legal Considerations 1. All state laws and requirements for carrying a passenger must be followed. 2. Some states have specific equipment requirements. Examples: the motorcycle must have passenger footrests, passengers must be able to reach the footrests, and a motorcycle must have a separate seating area for a passenger. 3. The decision to carry a child, assuming all safety and legal factors have been considered, is left to the parent or guardian. Ensure that the child is mature enough to handle the responsibilities, tall enough to reach the footrests, wears a properly fitted helmet and other protective gear, and holds onto you or the passenger hand-holds. Check your state s laws; a few states have set minimum ages for motorcycle passengers. Operator Preparation 1. Passengers should be considered as a second active rider so they can help ensure that safety and procedural operations are correctly followed. 2. A passenger will affect the handling characteristics of a motorcycle due to the extra weight and independent motion. 3. A passenger tends to move forward in quick stops and may bump your helmet with theirs. 4. Starting from a stop may require more throttle and clutch finesse. 5. Braking procedures may be affected. Braking sooner and/or with greater pressure may be required. 6. More weight over the rear tire may increase the usefulness and stopping power of the rear brake, especially in quick stop situations. 7. Riding on a downgrade will cause braking distance to increase compared to a flat surface. 8. Extra caution is called for in a corner because of the extra weight. Cornering clearances may be affected. 9. More time and space will be needed for passing. 10. The effects of wind, especially side wind, may be more pronounced.

Motorcycle Preparation 1. The motorcycle must be designed to accommodate a passenger. 2. The motorcycle owner s manual should be reviewed for manufacturer s tips about motorcycle setup as well as any related operational recommendations. 3. The motorcycle s suspension and tire pressure may need adjustment. 4. Care should be taken to not exceed the weight limitations specified in the owner s manual. Passenger Preparation 1. Passengers should be tall enough to reach the footrests and mature enough to handle the responsibilities. 2. Passengers should wear proper protective gear. 3. Passengers should receive a safety briefing (see #7 below). 4. Passengers should consider themselves a second operator and share responsibility for safety. General Safety Considerations 1. You need to be experienced in the motorcycle s operation and have a safetyoriented attitude before taking on the added responsibility of carrying a passenger. 2. Practice low-speed clutch/throttle control as well as normal and emergency braking in a low-risk area like an open parking lot, with a passenger. 3. Use caution in cornering and develop cornering skills over time to ensure passenger comfort and safety. 4. Use caution in corners as clearance may be affected. 5. Use MSF s Search, Evaluate, Execute strategy (SEE SM ) to increase time and space safety margins. 6. Allow time for a passenger to adjust to the sense of speed and the sensation of leaning; speeds should be conservatively safe and reasonable until a passenger acclimates to the proper riding techniques. 7. Ensure passengers follow safety procedures: a. Complete personal protective gear is properly in use. b. Hold operator s waist or hips, or motorcycle s passenger hand-holds. c. Keep feet on footrests at all times, including while stopped. d. Keep hands and feet away from hot or moving parts. e. When in a corner, look over the operator s shoulder in the direction of the corner. f. Avoid turning around or making sudden moves that might affect operation. g. If crossing an obstacle, stand on the pegs with the knees slightly bent and allow the legs to absorb the shock upon impact.

8. Allow more time for passing. 9. Be ready to counter the effects of wind. 10. Avoid extreme speeds and dramatic lean angles. 11. Be ready for a passenger bump with their helmet or with their whole body sliding forward during hard braking. 12. Have the passenger mount after the motorcycle s stand is raised and the motorcycle is securely braced. Hold the front brake lever if the surface isn t level. 13. Have the passenger dismount first. 14. Annually complete a Basic RiderCourse 2 Skills Practice with a passenger. 15. Have frequent passengers complete a Basic RiderCourse so they can better understand the operator s task. ************************************************************************** Black ice Black ice, sometimes called clear ice, refers to a thin coating of glaze ice on a surface, especially on roads. The ice itself is not black, but virtually transparent, allowing the often black road below to be seen through it. Wikipedia Text under CC-BY-SA license Many of us don t retrieve our motorcycles from storage until the possibility of this phenomenon is over. Basically, if the temperature dips down below freezing and there is moisture, the possibility of black ice forming is a real hazard. Now, before you say; I don t ride until it warms up, this could affect you while operating your four-wheeler also. Remember seeing signs that say; Bridge Freezes Before Road Surface? The air that circulates under the bridge wicks the temperature from the bridge s span which is also the driving surface, dropping the temperature even lower. Without realizing it, we could be on a patch of ice. We need to remain as alert as possible, so we become aware of the hazard before we are trapped by it whether you are on two, three, four or more wheels. As the Shift Supervisor/Sergeant said on the TV Show Hill Street Blues ; BE SAFE OUT THERE!

more likely to ride overly enthusiastically. And 4. Riders skills are rusty. The last one is easy to address. Even if you are a very experienced rider, spending anywhere from ten minutes to an hour simply riding around a vacant parking lot playing with the capabilities of your bike makes a difference you ll notice in the days that follow. Set up some imaginary games using the car-space (or other) lot striping. Repeat controlled hard-breaking panic stops from low and medium speeds to pre-defined spots. How close can you come? Do some slow extreme weaves. And some faster turns. Again and again and again. The trick, because you are not learning this stuff for the very first time, is forcing yourself to repeat these made up maneuverability exercises over and over, trying to better your results a little each time. It can be hard to practice something you already know, but forcing yourself to do it will bring incremental improvements that may make a difference in some traffic situation later on. If you have time and want to improve even more, take an organized rider-skill class if one is available in your area.

From Our Members 2018 CHAPTER CHALLENGE ~ Nebraska Historical Markers ~ This year s challenge is to visit as many Nebraska Historical Markers as you can. There are more than 573 markers in the state and more than 100 markers just in Douglas County alone. We will award certificates at 3 different levels, Gold, Silver and Bronze. Visit 25 markers for a Bronze level, Visit 50 for Silver and 100 for the Gold level. Certificates will be awarded for each level at the Christmas party. A picture (or selfie) of the marker number will be proof of visit. For more information visit the website THE HISTORICAL MARKER DATABASE at You can find markers by state, county or city and get directions to them all. Daylight saving time has arrived. Families everywhere have turned the clock forward and checked other safety essentials around the house, like changing smoke detector batteries. Unfortunately, most families don t know that it s also a good time to check their vehicles for open recalls. Since many Americans spend hours in the car commuting to work, the few minutes spent maintaining the family car can help keep everyone safe on the road. Remember: "Safe Cars Save Lives."

We d like you to encourage your followers to use NHTSA s VIN Look-Up tool on NHTSA.gov at least twice a year to see if any of their vehicles are under a recall. To help remember, time the recall check with daylight saving time every March when setting clocks forward and every November when setting clocks back. We are hosting a #CheckForRecalls Tweet Up and we'd love for you to join us and spread this message to your friends, family, and followers. Who: NHTSA and You! What: #CheckForRecalls Tweet Up Where: How: Follow the conversation using the hashtag #CheckForRecalls. Feel free to in any of your tweets and we will get back to as many questions and comments as we can! Follow NHTSA on Facebook and Twitter to keep up to date with the latest recalls and safety campaigns. *********** Visit the web sites below for more GWRRA news.
