It is strongly recommended tht ech opertor (driver) red nd understnd this entire mnul before operting the trolling motor. Protecting People in the Wter WHILE YOU ARE TROLLING It is very difficult for person in the wter to tke quick ction to void bot heding in their direction, even t slow speeds Alwys slow down nd exercise extreme cution ny time you re boting in n re where there might be people in the wter. WHILE THE BOAT IS STATIONARY! WARNING A spinning propeller, moving bot, or ny solid device ttched to the bot cn cuse serious injury or deth to swimmers. Stop the trolling motor immeditely whenever nyone in the wter is ner your bot. Shut off the trolling motor before llowing people to swim or be in the wter ner your bot. 5 GENERAL INFORMATION Do not overlod your bot. Most bots re rted nd certified for mximum lod (weight) cpcities, refer to your bot cpcity plte. If in doubt, contct your deler or the bot's mnufcturer. Perform sfety checks nd required mintennce. Follow regulr schedule nd ensure ll repirs re mde properly. Never be under the influence of lcohol or drugs while boting (it is the lw). Alcohol or drug use impirs your judgment nd gretly reduces your bility to rect quickly. Pssenger bording. Stop the trolling motor whenever pssengers re bording or unloding. Be lert. The opertor of the bot is responsible by lw to mintin proper lookout by sight nd hering. The opertor must hve n unobstructed view prticulrly to the front. No pssengers, lod, or fishing sets should block the opertors view when operting the bot. Underwter hzrds. Reduce speed nd proceed with cution whenever nvigting in shllow wter. Tripping hzrds. To void trip hzrd, route ll cbles nd wiring netly nd out of the wy. Report ccidents. Bot opertors re required by lw to file Boting Accident Report with their stte boting lw enforcement gency when their bot is involved in certin boting ccidents. A boting ccident must be reported if 1) there is loss of life or probble loss of life, 2) there is personl injury requiring medicl tretment beyond first id, 3) there is dmge to bots or other property where the dmge vlue exceeds $ or 4) there is complete loss of the bot. WARNING Performing service or mintennce without first disconnecting the bttery cn cuse product dmge, personl injury, or deth due to fire, explosion, electricl shock, or unexpected motor strting. Alwys disconnect the bttery cbles from the bttery before mintining, servicing, instlling, or removing motor components. Stndrd Prctices nd Procedures When instlling or removing this trolling motor, follow these guidelines: Disconnect the trolling motor from the trolling motor bttery. Do not use the min engine bttery to power the trolling motor. Bttery Recommendtions Use 12 volt, deep cycle mrine btteries. The number of btteries required vries ccording to the model of your trolling motor. Refer to Bttery Connection. As generl rule, deep cycle btteries with higher mp hour rting or reserve cpcity rting will provide longer run times nd better performnce. Instll mnul reset circuit breker in line with the trolling motor positive leds within 1.8 m (6 ft) of the btteries. Do not extend the included 10 guge bttery cbles more thn 1.8 m (6 ft) for totl of 3 m (10 ft). If longer bttery cbles re required, MotorGuide offers ccessory 8 mm² (8 guge) bttery cbles. Use nylock nuts to secure the bttery cbles to their terminls. Using wing nuts to secure the bttery cbles cn cuse loose connections. Do not power ny depth sounders or fish finders from the trolling motor bttery. Connecting electronic equipment to the trolling motor btteries cn cuse electricl interference. Any depth sounders or fish finders must be powered from the engine strting or ccessory bttery. The following precutions should be observed to prevent n explosion: 1. Do not smoke ner btteries being chrged or which hve been chrged very recently. 2. Do not brek live circuits t terminls of btteries, becuse sprk usully occurs t the point where live circuit is broken. Alwys be creful when connecting or disconnecting cble clmps on chrgers. Poor connections re common cuse of electricl rcs which cuse explosions. 3. Do not reverse polrity of bttery terminl to cble connections. Wire nd Cble Routing Route the trolling motor wires on the opposite side of the bot from other bot wiring. The trolling motor should be connected to its own dedicted bttery. Sensitive electronics, such s depth finders, should be connected to seprte bttery. Mrine engines should hve their own dedicted strting bttery. All btteries should hve common ground.

CAUTION Disconnecting or connecting the bttery cbles in the incorrect order cn cuse injury from electricl shock or cn dmge the electricl system. Alwys disconnect the negtive ( ) bttery cble first nd connect it lst. NOTICE Filure to operte the trolling motor within the recommended voltge specifictions cn cuse product dmge. Do not exceed the mximum supply voltge. IMPORTANT: Refer to the decl on the hed of the trolling motor to determine the voltge requirements of your trolling motor. 12-VOLT BATTERY CONNECTION 1. Strting with the negtive ( ) led, disconnect the bttery cbles from the engine strting or ccessory bttery. 2. Instll 50 mp (good) or 60 mp (best) mnul reset circuit breker in line with the trolling motor power cble positive (+) led nd the trolling motor bttery positive (+) terminl. 3. Connect the positive (+) trolling motor led to the positive (+) trolling motor bttery terminl. 4. Connect the negtive ( ) trolling motor led to the negtive ( ) trolling motor bttery terminl. 5. Connect common ground bond from the trolling motor bttery negtive ( ) terminl to the engine strting bttery negtive ( ) terminl.

Strting with the negtive ( ) led, disconnect the bttery cbles from the engine strting or ccessory bttery. 2. Instll 50 mp (good) or 60 mp (best) mnul reset circuit breker in line with the trolling motor power cble positive (+) led nd the trolling motor bttery B positive (+) terminl. 3. Connect the positive (+) trolling motor led to the positive (+) terminl on trolling motor bttery B. 4. Connect jumper wire (reference gry) between the negtive ( ) terminl on bttery B to the positive (+) terminl on bttery A. IMPORTANT: The jumper wire should be the sme wire guge s the negtive ( ) nd positive (+) power cbles. 5. Connect the trolling motor negtive ( ) led to the negtive ( ) terminl on bttery A.

Select n pproprite re on the deck of the bot to instll the mount. Ensure tht the forwrd mounting screws will not penetrte the hull. IMPORTANT: Choose n re on the bot deck tht llows 7.6 cm (3 in.) clernce between the bow of the bot nd the column of the trolling motor Clernce 7.6 cm (3.0 in.) 2. Plce the bow mount bse on the surfce of the bot deck. Use the mount bse s templte to mrk the loctions of the front mounting holes nd the rer mounting holes on the mount bse.

16 TROLLING MOTOR INSTALLATION AND OPERATION IMPORTANT: A minimum of four mounting bolts re required to mount the trolling motor to the bot. Spred the mounting bolts s fr prt s prcticl for the most secure mounting. - Mount brcket mounting holes Drill the mounting holes with 7 mm (1/4 in.) dimeter drill bit. Remove ny debris. IMPORTANT: Using lrger drill bit, countersink the holes on fiberglss bots to prevent crcking. 4. Insert the rubber isoltors between the bse of the mount nd the bot mounting surfce. Plce the tie down strp under the mount brcket, hook nd loop side down, with the buckle fcing towrd the outside of the bot. b Velcro tie down strp b - Buckle 5. Instll the stinless steel wshers nd nylon locking nuts onto the mounting bolts underneth the bot deck. Tighten them securely with (7/16 in.) wrenches.

17 TROLLING MOTOR INSTALLATION AND OPERATION IMPORTANT: If necessry, shim the rubber wshers with 25 mm (1 in.) outside dimeter stinless steel wshers to crete level mounting surfce. c b - Mount brcket b - Mounting bolt c - Rubber isoltor d - Deck e - Wsher f - Nylon locking nut d e f Once instlled, the brcket should fsten securely nd evenly, with the ltch pins in the slots, nd relese with light, esy pull on the rope hndle. Permnent Foot Pedl Mounting (Optionl) 1. Determine suitble loction for the foot pedl with the trolling motor deployed nd in the stowed position. Ensure tht there re no obstructions beneth the bot deck tht would interfere with the mounting screws, such s bulkheds or bot wiring. 2. Once suitble loction is chosen, mrk the mounting holes, using the foot pedl s templte. 3. Use 3 mm (7/64 in.) drill bit to drill holes through the bot deck.

Use four #8 x 2 in. stinless steel screws to secure the foot pedl to the bot deck Instlling the Motor into the Bow Mount b - Steering tension collr (hnd operted models only) b - Brcket door c - Brcket door knob c Turn the brcket door knob counterclockwise to loosen nd open the brcket door. 2. Plce the motor column into the brcket nd close the door. 3. Turn the brcket door knob clockwise to tighten the motor column in the brcket. Removing the Motor from the Bow Mount 1. Turn the brcket door knob counterclockwise to loosen nd open the brcket door. 2. Remove the motor column from the brcket nd close the door.

19 TROLLING MOTOR INSTALLATION AND OPERATION Stowing the Trolling Motor! WARNING Rotting propellers cn cuse serious injury or deth. Never strt or operte the motor out of wter.! CAUTION Moving prts, such s hinges nd pivot points, cn cuse serious injury. Keep wy from moving prts when stowing, deploying, or tilting the motor. 1. Firmly grsp the ltch relese hndle. 2. Snp the ltch relese hndle to disengge the lock pin. 3. Continue to pull the ltch relese hndle to rise the lower unit onto the mount. NOTE: Hnd operted trolling motor shown in the illustrtion below. - Ltch relese hndle IMPORTANT: Gently rise the trolling motor out of the wter. Do not relese the ltch relese hndle until the lock pin is engged.

20 TROLLING MOTOR INSTALLATION AND OPERATION 4. Once the motor is in the stowed position, the lock pin engges to secure the trolling motor X3 in the stowed position 5. Position the tie down strp over the composite column nd through the buckle. Pull it tight, then secure the hook nd loop bcking together to secure the motor to the mount brcket. - Tie down strp Deploying the Trolling Motor 54587! Keep wy from moving prts when stowing, deploying, or tilting the motor.! CAUTION Avoid possible serious injury from the motor dropping suddenly when djusting the motor depth. Firmly grsp the motor shft with one hnd when rising or lowering the motor. 1. Remove the tie down strp securing the trolling motor to the mount brcket. 2. Firmly grsp the ltch relese hndle.

21 TROLLING MOTOR INSTALLATION AND OPERATION 3. Snp the ltch relese hndle to disengge the lock pin. 4. Continue to mintin tension on the ltch relese hndle while lowering the trolling motor into the wter. IMPORTANT: Gently lower the trolling motor into the wter. Do not relese the ltch relese hndle until the lock pin is engged. - Ltch relese hndle Once the motor is in the deployed position, the lock pin will engge to secure the trolling motor. - X3 in the deployed position Adjusting the Steering Tension (Hnd Operted Motors Only) Adjust the steering tension collr to increse or decrese the effort to turn the motor freely. 1. To increse the steering tension, turn the steering tension collr clockwise.

22 TROLLING MOTOR INSTALLATION AND OPERATION 2. To reduce the steering tension, turn the steering tension collr counterclockwise. - Steering tension collr Adjusting the Motor Depth! CAUTION Avoid possible serious injury from dropping the motor when djusting the motor depth. Firmly grsp the motor shft with one hnd when rising or lowering the motor. HAND-OPERATED MODELS Adjust the depth of the motor to improve trolling motor performnce in vrious wter depths. IMPORTANT: When djusting the motor depth, ensure tht the propeller bldes re fully submerged cm (6 12 in.) below the wter surfce to void ventiltion. 1. Firmly grsp the column with one hnd while holding the depth djustment collr. 2. Loosen the depth djustment collr until the motor column slides freely. 3. Rise or lower the motor column until the propeller bldes re submerged cm (6 12 in.) below the wter surfce, then tighten the collr. - Depth djustment collr 54523

Firmly grsp the column with one hnd. 2. Loosen the brcket door knob until the motor column slides freely. 3. Rise or lower the motor column until the propeller bldes re submerged cm (6 12 in.) below the wter surfce, then tighten the collr. - Brcket door knob 54573

25 TROLLING MOTOR INSTALLATION AND OPERATION Speed Control Cble Steer Models FIVE-SPEED AND DIGITAL VARIABLE SPEED MOTORS Foot operted motors re vilble s five speed models or with digitl vrible speed control. Control the speed of your motor by rolling the speed control knob with your hnd or foot until you rech the desired speed. b c d Foot pedl b - Momentry switch c - On/off/pedl switch d - Speed control knob Speed control knob: The speed control knob on five speed motor is numbered 0 5, nd llows you to select one of five preset speeds, nd stop the motor. Digitl vrible speed motor control knobs re numbered 0 10, nd llows you to select ny speed from 0 10, nd stop the motor. Momentry switch: The momentry switch is locted on the top right corner of the foot pedl. The momentry switch works in conjunction with the on/off/pedl switch when it is in the pedl position. When the momentry switch is pressed, the motor will run t the selected speed s long s the switch is pressed. On/off/pedl switch: This three position switch provides three options for operting the motor: on, pedl, or off.. On: Allows the motor to run continuously t the speed selected by the speed control knob, without the use of the momentry switch. b. Pedl: Allows the motor to ctivte with the momentry switch t the speed selected by the speed control knob. c. Off: Turns the trolling motor off.

26 TROLLING MOTOR INSTALLATION AND OPERATION Speed Control Hnd Operted Models Adjust the speed control to the desired direction nd thrust level. Rotte the twist tiller hndle clockwise for forwrd movement or counterclockwise for reverse movement. The "off" hndle position stops the motor. Five speed models hve five forwrd speed settings nd two reverse speed settings. Digitl vrible speed models llow you to select ny speed from 0 10 in forwrd or reverse. c b Forwrd speed control b - Off c - Reverse speed control Bttery Indictor Light (Digitl Models Only) The bttery indictor light (locted on the hed cover) provides bttery stte of chrge informtion t glnce. The bttery light will turn on when the trolling motor is connected to the bttery, nd will remin on the entire time tht the motor is connected to the bttery. Depending on the bttery stte of chrge, the light will either be green (chrged) or red (dischrged).

27 Trolling Motor Cre To keep your trolling motor in the best operting condition nd retin its dependbility, it is importnt tht your trolling motor receive periodic inspections nd mintennce. We urge you to keep it mintined properly to ensure the sfety of you nd your pssengers.! WARNING Neglecting to inspect, mintin, or repir your trolling motor cn result in product dmge or serious injury or deth. Do not perform mintennce or service on your trolling motor if you re not fmilir with the correct service nd sfety procedures. SELECTING REPLACEMENT PARTS We recommend using originl MotorGuide Certified Tough replcement prts. Inspection nd Mintennce Schedule BEFORE EACH USE Check the trolling motor for tightness on the deck mount. Check the tightness of the bttery led connections. Visully inspect for loose or corroded wiring connections. Check the tightness of the propeller nut. Check the propeller bldes for dmge. Rinse the trolling motor with clen wter to remove dirt nd dust tht my scrtch the surfce. EVERY 100 HOURS OF USE OR ANNUALLY Periodiclly lubricte ll the pivot points. Refer to Lubriction Points. Check the tightness of bolts, nuts, nd other fsteners. Inspect the bttery. Refer to Bttery Inspection. STORAGE PREPARATION MAINTENANCE The mjor considertion in prepring the trolling motor for storge is to protect it from corrosion nd dmge cused by freezing of trpped wter. Complete the pproprite cre instructions to prepre the trolling motor for storge. Store the trolling motor in dry loction where it will not be ffected by tempertures below 29 C ( 20 F).

Ensure tht the bttery cble terminls re clen, tight, nd correctly instlled. For instlltion instructions, refer to Bttery Connection. 3. Ensure tht the bttery is equipped with bttery box to prevent ccidentl shorting of the bttery terminls. Propeller Replcement! WARNING Performing service or mintennce without first disconnecting the bttery cn cuse product dmge, personl injury, or deth due to fire, explosion, electricl shock, or unexpected motor strting. Alwys disconnect the bttery cbles from the bttery before mintining, servicing, instlling, or removing motor components. REMOVING THE PROPELLER MAINTENANCE 1. Disconnect the power cbles from the bttery. 2. While holding the propeller blde with one gloved hnd, use 9/16 in. wrench or rtchet nd 9/16 in. socket to remove the propeller nut. Remove the propeller nut nd wsher (or node, for sltwter models). IMPORTANT: Remove the propeller nut with wrench or rtchet nd socket. Using nother tool my dmge the propeller nut or shft. If the propeller cnnot be removed esily, use rubber mllet to lightly tp the bck side of the opposite blde. If the propeller cnnot be removed, hve the propeller removed by n uthorized deler.

30 MAINTENANCE NOTE: If the propeller pin is bent, replce the propeller pin INSTALLING THE PROPELLER 1. Rotte the motor shft to insert the propeller pin horizontlly. - Propeller pin Instll the propeller onto the motor shft by engging the propeller onto the propeller pin

31 MAINTENANCE 3. Instll the wsher (or node, for sltwter models) onto the propeller shft then instll the propeller nut. Tighten the propeller nut securely Tighten the propeller nut nother ¼ turn. Adjusting the Steering Cble Tension! WARNING Neglecting to inspect, mintin, or repir your trolling motor cn result in product dmge or serious injury or deth. Do not perform mintennce or service on your trolling motor if you re not fmilir with the correct service nd sfety procedures. The cble tension on the X3 trolling motor is preset t the fctory. With time nd use, the cbles my stretch slightly, requiring occsionl djustment. The following procedure explins how to djust the steering cble tension. Use cre while djusting the steering cble tension. Excessive cble tension will cuse premture wer to the cbles nd pulleys, while excessively loose tension my cuse the cbles to jump off of the pulleys, resulting in loss of steering control. 1. Remove the foot pedl from the bot deck if it hs been secured with screws. 2. Adjust the cble tension by turning the cble tension screw clockwise to increse tension, nd counterclockwise to decrese tension. Adjust the cble tension screw to the specified torque vlue.
