4 1. For sfe opertion WARNING This chinsw hs been especilly designed for tree mintennce nd should therefore only be used by trined opertors when working on trees. GB-4 1. Never operte chin sw when you re ftigued, ill, or upset, or under the influence of mediction tht my mke you drowsy, or if you re under the influence of lcohol or drugs. 2. Use sfety footwer, snug fitting clothing nd eye, hering nd hed protection devices. Use the vibrtion-proof glove. 3. Keep the sw chin shrp nd the sw, including the AV system, well mintined. A dull chin will increse cutting time, nd pressing dull chin through wood will increse the vibrtions trnsmitted to your hnds. A sw with loose components or with dmged or worn AV buffers will lso tend to hve higher vibrtion levels. 4. Alwys use cution when hndling fuel. Wipe up ll spills nd then move the chin sw t lest 3 m from the fueling point before strting the engine. 5. Eliminte ll sources of sprks or flme (i.e. smoking, open flmes, or work tht cn cuse sprks) in the res where fuel is mixed, poured, or stored. 6. Do not smoke while hndling fuel or while operting the chin sw. 7. Do not llow other persons to be ner the chin sw when strting or cutting. Keep bystnders nd nimls out of the work re. Children, pets nd bystnders should be minimum of 10 m wy when you strt or operte the chin sw. 8. Never strt cutting until you hve cler work re, secure footing, nd plnned retret pth from the flling tree. 9. Alwys hold the chin sw firmly with both hnds when the engine is running. Use firm grip with thumb nd fingers encircling the chin sw hndles. 10. Keep ll prts of your body wy from the sw chin when the engine is running. 11. Before you strt the engine, mke sure the sw chin is not contcting nything. 12. Alwys crry the chin sw with the engine stopped, the guide br nd sw chin to the rer, nd the muffler wy from your body. 13. Alwys inspect the chin sw before ech use for worn, Ioose, or dmged prts. Never operte chin sw tht is dmged, improperly djusted, or is not completely nd securely ssembled. Be sure tht the sw chin stops moving when the throttle control trigger is relesed. 14. All chin sw service, other thn the items listed in the Owner s Mnul, should be performed by competent chin sw service personnel. (E.g., if improper tools re used to remove the flywheel, or if n improper tool is used to hold the flywheel in order to remove the clutch, structurl dmge to the flywheel could occur which could subsequently cuse the flywheel to disintegrte.) 15. Alwys shut off the engine before setting it down. 16. When cutting limb tht is under tension, be lert for spring- bck so tht you will not be struck when the tension in the wood fibers is relesed. 18. Never cut in high wind, bd wether, when visibility is poor or in very high or low tempertures. Alwys check the tree for ded brnches which could fll during the felling opertion. 19. Keep the hndles dry, clen nd free of oil or fuel mixture.
5 20. Operte the chin sw only in well ventilted res. Never strt or run the engine inside closed room or building nd potentilly explosive tmosphere. Exhust fumes contin dngerous crbon monoxide. 21. Do not operte the chin sw in tree unless specilly trined to do so. 22. Gurd ginst kickbck. Kickbck is the upwrd motion of the guide br which occurs when the sw chin t the nose of the guide br contcts n object. Kickbck cn led to dngerous loss of control of the chin sw. 23. When trnsporting your chin sw, mke sure the pproprite guide br scbbrd is in plce. 24. Never touch the cover, guide br, sw chin or nut with bre hnds while the engine is in opertion or immeditely fter shutting down the engine. Doing so could result in serious burns becuse of high temperture. (1) cover (2) guide br (3) sw chin (4) nut KICKBACK SAFETY PRECAUTIONS FOR CHAIN SAW USERS WARNING Kickbck my occur when the nose or tip of the guide br touches n object, or when the wood closes in nd pinches the sw chin in the cut. Either of these rections my cuse you to Iose control of the sw, which could result in serious personl injury. Do not rely exclusively on the sfety devices built into your sw. As chin sw user you should tke severl steps to keep cutting jobs free from ccident or injury. (1) With bsic understnding of kickbck you cn reduce or eliminte the element of surprise. Sudden surprise contributes to ccidents. (2) Keep good grip on the sw with both hnds, the right hnd on the rer GZ4500 hndle, nd the left hnd on the front hndle, when the engine is running. Use firm grip with thumbs nd fingers encircling the chin sw hndles. A firm grip will help you reduce kickbck nd mintin control of the sw. (3) Mke certin tht the re in which you re cutting is free from obstructions. Do not let the nose of the guide br contct log, brnch, or ny other obstruction which could be hit while you re operting the sw. (4) Cut t high engine speeds. (5) Do not overrech or cut bove shoulder height. (6) Follow the mnufcturer s shrpening nd mintennce instructions for the sw chin. (7) Only use replcement brs nd chins specified by the mnufcturer or the equivlent. WORSE EFFECTS OF VIBRATION If you continue to use high-vibrtion tools these symptoms will probbly get worse, for exmple: the numbness in your hnds could become permnent nd you won t be ble to feel things t ll; you will hve difficulty picking up smll objects such s screws or nils; the vibrtion white finger could hppen more frequently nd ffect more of your fingers. FOR PROTECTING YOUR BODY FROM VIBRATION Plese observe the following mtter, in order to protect the helth of your body. 1. Alwys use the right tool for ech job (to do the job more quickly nd expose you to less hnd-rm vibrtion). 2. Check tools before using them to mke sure they hve been properly mintined nd repired to void incresed vibrtion cused by fults or generl wer. 3. Mke sure cutting tools re kept shrp so tht they remin efficient. 4. Reduce the mount of time you use tool in one go, by doing other jobs in between. 5. Avoid gripping or forcing tool or workpiece more thn you hve to. 6. Store tools so tht they do not hve very cold hndles when next used. 7. Encourge good blood circultion by: keeping wrm nd dry (when necessry, wer gloves, ht, wterproofs nd use heting pds if vilble); giving up or cutting down on smoking becuse smoking reduces blood flow; nd mssging nd exercising your fingers DISPOSAL When you dispose of the mchine, do not disssemble the mchine. The port to refuel MIX GASOLINE Position: Fuel cp The port to top up chin oil Position: Oil cp Setting the switch to the O position, the engine stops immeditely. Position: Rer-left of the unit Strting the engine. If you pull out the choke knob (t the bck-right of the rer hndle) to the point of the rrow, you cn set the strting mode s follows: First-stge position strting mode when the engine is wrm. Second-stge position strting mode when the engine is cold. Position: Upper-right of the irclener cover The screw under the H stmp is The High-speed djustment screw. The screw under the L stmp is The Slow-speed djustment screw. The screw t the left of the T stmp is the Idle djustment screw. Position: Left side of the rer hndle Shows the directions tht the chin brke is relesed (white rrow) nd ctivted (blck rrow). Position: Front of the chin cover If you turn the rod by screwdriver follow the rrow to the "MAX" position, the chin oil flow more, nd if you turn to the "MIN" position, less. 7 3. Instlling Guide Br nd Sw Chin GZ4500 A stndrd sw unit pckge contins the items s illustrted. Power unit Plug wrench (Hexgon socket (S13/S16) + Slotted driver) Screwdriver for crburetor djustment (Slotted driver) G B Br protector Guide br Sw chin Open the box nd instll the guide br nd the sw chin on the power unit s follows: The sw chin hs very shrp edges. Use thick protective gloves for sfety. 4. Fit the chin cover to the power unit nd fsten the nuts to finger tightness. 5. While holding up the tip of the br, djust the chin tension by turning the tensioner screw until the tie strps just touch the bottom side of the br ril. 1. Pull the gurd towrds the front hndle to check tht the chin brke is not engged. 2. Loosen the nuts nd remove the chin cover. 3. Ger the chin to the sprocket nd, while fitting the sw chin round the guide br, mount the guide br to the power unit. Adjust the position of the chin tensioner. Loosen Tighten Tensioner screw Lift up Tensioner nut 6. Tighten the nuts securely with the br tip held up (12 ~ 15 N m). Then check the chin for smooth rottion nd proper tension while moving it by hnd. If necessry, redjust with the chin cover loose. Chin cover Note: Py ttention to the correct direction of the sw chin. Moving direction 7. Tighten the tensioner screw. Note: A new chin will expnd its length in the beginning of use. 8 4. Fuel nd Chin Oil FUEL WARNING Gsoline is very flmmble. Avoid smoking or bringing ny flme or sprks ner fuel. Mke sure to stop the engine nd llow it cool before refueling the unit. Select outdoor bre ground for fueling nd move t lest 3 m (10 ft) wy from the fueling point before strting the engine. The Zenoh engines re lubricted by oil specilly formulted for ir-cooled 2-cycle gsoline engine use. If Zenoh oil is not vilble, use n nti-oxidnt dded qulity oil expressly lbeled for ir-cooled 2-cycle engine use (JASO FC GRADE OIL or ISO EGC GRADE). Do not use BIA or TCW (2-stroke wter-cooling type) mixed oil. RECOMMENDED MIXING RATIO GASOLINE 50 : OIL 1 (when using ZENOAH genuine oil) Exhust emission re controlled by the fundmentl engine prmeters nd components (eq., crburtion, ignition timing nd port timing) without ddition of ny mjor hrdwre or the introduction of n inert mteril during combustion. These engines re certified to operte on unleded gsoline. Mke sure to use gsoline with minimum octne number of 89RON (USA/Cnd: 87AL). If you use gsoline of lower octne vlue thn prescribed, there is dnger tht the engine temperture my rise nd n engine problem such s piston seizing my consequently occur. Unleded gsoline is recommended to reduce the contmintion of the ir for the ske of your helth nd the environment. Poor qulity gsolines or oils my dmge seling rings, fuel lines or fuel tnk of the engine. HOW TO MIX FUEL 4. Pour in the rest of gsoline nd gitte gin for t lest one minute. As some oils my be difficult to gitte depending on oil ingredients, sufficient gittion is necessry for the engine to lst long. Be creful tht, if the gittion is insufficient, there is n incresed dnger of erly piston seizing due to bnormlly len mixture. 5. Put cler indiction on the outside of the continer to void mixing up with gsoline or other continers. 6. Indicte the contents on outside of continer for esy identifiction. FUELING THE UNIT 1. Untwist nd remove the fuel cp. Rest the cp on dustless plce. 2. Put fuel into the fuel tnk to 80% of the full cpcity. 3. Fsten the fuel cp securely nd wipe up ny fuel spillge round the unit. WARNING 1. Select flt nd bre ground for fueling. 2. Move t lest 10 feet (3 meters) wy from the fueling point before strting the engine. 3. Stop the engine before refueling the unit. At tht time, be sure to sufficiently gitte the mixed gsoline in the continer. FOR YOUR ENGINE LIFE, AVOID: 1. FUEL WITH NO OIL (RAW GASOLINE) It will cuse severe dmge to the internl engine prts very quickly. 2. GASOHOL It cn cuse deteriortion of rubber nd/ or plstic prts nd disruption of engine lubriction. 3. OIL FOR 4-CYCLE ENGINE USE It cn cuse sprk plug fouling, exhust port blocking, or piston ring sticking. 4. Mixed fuels which hve been left unused for period of one month or more my clog the crburetor nd result in the engine filing to operte properly. 5. In the cse of storing the product for long period of time, clen the fuel tnk fter rendering it empty. Next, ctivte the engine nd empty the crburetor of the composite fuel. 6. In the cse of scrpping the used mixed oil continer, scrp it only t n uthorized repository site. Note: As for detils of qulity ssurnce, red the description in the section Limited Wrrnty crefully. Moreover, norml wer nd chnge in product with no functionl influence re not covered by the wrrnty. Also, be creful tht, if the usge in the instruction mnul is not observed s to the mixed gsoline, etc. described therein, it my not be covered by the wrrnty. CHAIN OIL Use motor oil SAE #10W-30 ll yer round or SAE #30 ~ #40 in summer nd SAE #20 in winter. Py ttention to gittion. 1. Mesure out the quntities of gsoline nd oil to be mixed. 2. Put some of the gsoline into clen, pproved fuel continer. 3. Pour in ll of the oil nd gitte well. Note: Do not use wsted or regenerted oil tht cn cuse dmge to the oil pump. GB-8
9 5. Operting the Engine It is very dngerous to run chinsw tht mounts broken prts or lcks ny prts. Before strting engine, mke sure tht ll the prts including br nd chin re instlled properly. STARTING THE ENGINE 1. Fill fuel nd chin oil tnks respectively, nd tighten the cps securely. GZ When engine hs ignited, first push in the choke knob to the first-stge position nd then pull the strter gin to strt the engine. 6. Allow the engine to wrm up with the throttle lever pulled slightly. Keep cler of the sw chin s it will strt rotting upon strting of engine. G B Fuel 2. Set the switch to I position. Chin oil CHECKING THE OIL SUPPLY Mke sure to set up the br nd the chin when checking the oil supply. If not, the rotting prts my be exposed. It is very dngerous. After strting the engine, run the chin t medium speed nd see if chin oil is scttered off s shown in the figure. Switch Throttle interlock Chin oil Throttle lever 3. Pull out the choke knob to the second-stge position. The choke will close nd the throttle lever will then be set in the strting position. Choke knob The chin oil flow cn be chnged by inserting screwdriver in the hole on bottom of the clutch side. Adjust ccording to your work conditions. Note: When restrting immeditely fter stopping the engine, set the Choke knob in the first-stge position (choke open nd throttle lever in the strting position). Note: Once the choke knob hs been pulled out, it will not return to the operting position even if you press down on it with your finger. When you wish to return the choke knob to the operting position, pull out the throttle lever insted. Rich Len Note: The oil tnk should become nerly empty by the time fuel is used up. Be sure to refill the oil tnk every time when refueling the sw. ADJUSTING THE CARBURETOR L needle H needle Idle djusting screw Chin oil flow djusting 4. While holding the sw unit securely on the ground, pull the strter rope vigorously. The crburetor on your unit hs been fctory djusted, but my require fine tuning due to chnge in operting conditions. Before djusting the crburetor, mke sure tht the provided ir/fuel filters re clen nd fresh nd the fuel properly mixed. Do not strt the engine while the chin sw hngs in one hnd. The sw chin my touch your body. This in very dngerous. When djusting, tke the following steps: Note: Be sure to djust the crburetor with the br chin ttched. GB-9
10 1. Stop engine nd screw L needle until it stops. Never force. Then set it bck the initil number of turns s shown below. H needle is restricted within the number of turn s shown below. H needle : - 1 /4 L needle : 2 3 /8 ± 1 /2 2. Strt the engine nd llow it to wrm up in low speed for few minutes. 3. Turn L needle slowly clockwise to find position where idling speed is mximum, then set the needle bck qurter (1/4) turn counterclockwise. 4. Turn the idle djusting screw (T) counterclockwise so tht the sw chin does not turn. If the idling speed is too slow, turn the screw clockwise. 5. Mke test cut nd djust the H needle for best cutting power, not for mximum speed. CHAIN BRAKE This mchine is equipped with n utomtic brke to stop sw chin rottion upon occurrence of kickbck during sw cutting. The brke is utomticlly operted by inertil force, which cts on the weight fitted inside the front gurd. This brke cn lso be operted mnully with the front gurd turned down to the guide br. To relese the brke, pull up the front gurd towrd the front hndle till click sound is herd. Switch Crburetor nti-freeze mechnism Operting chin sws in tempertures of 0 5 C t times of high humidity my result in ice forming within the crburetor, nd this in turn my cuse the output power of the engine to be reduced or for the engine to fil to operte smoothly. This product hs ccordingly been designed with ventiltion htch on the right side of the surfce of the cylinder cover to llow wrm ir to be supplied to the engine nd to thereby prevent icing from occurring. Under norml circumstnces the product should be used in the norml operting mode, i.e., in the mode to which it is set t the time of shipment. However when the possibility exists tht icing my occur, the unit should be set to operte in the nti-freeze mode before use. Plese switch between modes in the repir specilty store. Norml operting mode Anti-freeze mode Cylinder cover Sunshine mrk Snow mrk [Cution] Be sure to confirm brke opertion during dily inspection. How to confirm: 1) Turn off the engine. 2) Holding the chin sw horizontlly, relese your hnd from the front hndle, hit the tip of the guide br to stump or piece of wood, nd confirm brke opertion. Operting level vries by br size. Continuing to use the product in the nti-freeze mode even when tempertures hve risen nd returned to norml, my result in the engine filing to strt properly or in the engine filing to operte t its norml speed, nd for this reson you should lwys be sure to return the unit to the norml operting mode if there is no dnger of icing occurring. In cse the brke is not effective, sk our deler for inspection nd repirs. If the engine keeps rotting t high speed with the brke engged, the clutch will overhet cusing trouble. When the brke engges during opertion, immeditely relese the throttle lever to stop the engine. STOPPING THE ENGINE 1. Relese the throttle lever to llow the engine to idle for few minutes. 2. Set the switch to the O (STOP) position. GB-10
11 6. Swing Before proceeding to your job, red the section For Sfe Opertion. It is recommended to first prctice swing esy logs. This lso helps you get ccustomed to your unit. Alwys follow the sfety regultions. The chin sw must only be used for cutting wood. It is forbidden to cut other types of mteril. Vibrtions nd kickbck vry with different mterils nd the requirements of the sfety regultions would not be respected. Do not use the chin sw s lever for lifting, moving or splitting objects. Do not lock it over fixed stnds. It is forbidden to hitch tools or pplictions to the PTO other thn those specified by the mnufcturer. FELLING A TREE Felling direction GZ4500 opertion before ech usge by running the sw t full the throttle for I - 2 seconds nd pushing the front hnd gurd forwrd. The chin should stop immeditely with the engine t full speed. If the chin is slow to stop or does not stop, replce the brke bnd nd clutch drum before use. It is extremely importnt tht the chin brke be checked for proper opertion before ech use nd tht the chin be shrp in order to mintin the kickbck sfety level of this sw. Removl of the sfety devices, indequte mintennce, or incorrect replcement of the br or chin my increse the risk ot serious personl injury due to kickbck. G B It is not necessry to force the sw into the cut. Apply only light pressure while running the engine t full throttle. When the sw chin is cught in the cut, do not ttempt to pull it out by force, but use wedge or lever to open the wy. If the guide br nd sw chin becomes cught in wood while operting it, stop the engine. Do not pry the hndle with excessive force. Use wedge to remove the chin insted. GUARD AGAINST KICKBACK This sw is equipped with chin brke tht will stop the chin in the event of kickbck if operting properly. You must check the chin brke Notch cut 1. Decide the felling direction considering the wind, len of the tree, loction of hevy brnches, ese of completing the tsk fter felling nd other fctors. 2. While clering the re round the tree, rrnge good foothold nd retret pth. 3. Mke notch cut one-third of the wy into the tree on the felling side. 4. Mke felling cut from the opposite side of the notch nd t level slightly higher thn the bottom of the notch. When you fell tree, be sure to wrn neighboring workers of the dnger. Bucking nd Limbing Felling cut Alwys ensure your foothold. Do not stnd on the log. Be lert to the rolling over of cut log. Especilly when working on slope, stnd on the uphill side of the log. Follow the instructions in For Sfe Opertion to void kickbck of the sw. Before strting work, check the direction of bending force inside the log to be cut. Alwys finish cutting from the opposite side of the bending direction to prevent the guide br from being cught in the cut. GB-11
12 A log lying on the ground First check to which side the limb is bent. Then mke the initil cut from the bent side nd finish by swing from the opposite side. Be lert to the springing bck of cut limb. Sw down hlfwy, then roll the log over nd cut from the opposite side. Pruning of Stnding Tree A log hnging off the ground In re A, sw up from the bottom one-third nd finish by swing down from the top. In re B, sw down from the top one-third nd finish by swing up from the bottom. Cutting the limbs of Fllen Tree Cut up from the bottom, finish down from the top. Do not use n unstble foothold or ldder. Do not overrech. Do not cut bove shoulder height. Alwys use both your hnds to hold the sw. 7. Mintennce Before clening, the inspecting or repiring the unit, mke sure tht engine hs stopped nd is cool. Disconnect the sprk plug to prevent ccidentl strting. MAINTENANCE AFTER EACH USE 1. Air filter Dust on the clener surfce cn be removed by tpping corner of the clener ginst hrd surfce. To clen dirt in the meshes, split the clener into hlves nd brush in gsoline. When using compressed ir, blow from the inside. To ssemble the clener hlves, press the rim until it clicks. Note: When instlling the min filter, mke sure tht the grooves on the filter edge re correctly fit with the projections on the cylinder cover. 3. Guide br When the guide br is dismounted, remove swdust in the br groove nd the oiling port. Grese the nose sprocket from the feeding port on the tip of the br. Oiling port Grese port Sprocket 4. Others Check for fuel lekge nd loose fstenings nd dmge to mjor prts, especilly hndle joints nd guide br mounting. If ny defects re found, mke sure to hve them repired before operting the sw gin. PERIODICAL SERVICE POINTS 1. Cylinder fins Dust clogging between the cylinder fins will cuse overheting of the engine. Periodiclly check nd clen the cylinder fins in the repir specilty store. 2. Oiling port Dismount the guide br nd check the oiling port for clogging. Oiling port GB-12
13 2. Fuel filter () Using wire hook, tke out the filter from the filler port. 3. If the wer is considerble, replce it with new one. Never fit new chin on worn sprocket, or worn chin on new sprocket. 8. Mintennce of Sw Chin nd Guide Br Sw Chin It is very importnt for smooth nd sfe opertion to lwys keep the cutters shrp. Plce the file on the cutter nd push stright forwrd. Keep the file position s illustrted. The cutters need to be shrpened when: Swdust becomes powder-like. You need extr force to sw in. The cut pth does not go stright. Vibrtion increses. Fuel consumption increses. Cutter setting stndrds: Be sure to wer sfety gloves. Before filing: Mke sure the sw chin is held securely. Mke sure the engine is stopped. Use round file of proper size for the chin. Chin type: 95VPX File size: 3/16 in (4.8 mm) After ech cutter hs been filed, check the depth guge nd file it to the proper level s illustrted.
