3 Whale s Tooth Parking Lot, Railyard & Island Sand New Bedford Whale s Tooth, Railyard, Island Sand: This site has been identified as a potential future railroad station associated with the proposed South Coast Rail project, which is being considered by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts to develop commuter rail service between Boston and the South Coast of Massachusetts. If these properties are used for an expanded rail operation as planned, they will not be available to support offshore wind activities. If there is room to accommodate offshore wind activities at this site, it is thought that it would function best as a transfer and storage site for small components and as an adjunct quayside (through Island Sand) for the neighboring manufacturing sites in the Port of New Bedford. Innovation-based Solutions: Use of inter-site transport systems such as a SPMTs and barge system to move components around to other sites that are better suited for actual manufacturing; and Conduct small-footprint manufacturing and conduct storage at the site.
