2 AOA 2017 Cnference 2 Phase & 3 Phase Decanters DECANTERS 2 phase and 3 phase decanters have a lt in cmmn. They use high rtatinal speeds t separate cmpnents f different densities. The principle f a decanter centrifuge is t separate slids materials frm liquids in a slurry. The rtatinal speed is typically between 2500 and 5000 rpm depending n the diameter f the decanter. This creates a G frce f typically 3000 G The three main cmpnents in the paste are slids with a density f apprximately 1.2; water with a density f 1.08 and il with a density f grams per cm 3 ). The heaviest materials is n the utside and the lightest materials (live il) is in the centre.

By setting the weir plates (dam plates) at a crrect relative t the slids utlet, equilibrium is fund where the slids and enugh water are expelled frm the slids and the il flws ut the il utlet.

13 AOA 2017 Cnference 2 Phase & 3 Phase Decanters What is best, 2 r 3 phase decanters? 2 r 3 phase have very similar extractin. Mre water is used in a 3 phase decanter. The pmace is drier frm 3 phase decanter and can be stckpiled t be dealt with later. The pmace is a slppy cnsistency frm a 2 phase decanter. It needs t be cnstantly taken away and spread r a shallw dam is needed. Water frm a 3 phase decanter can g int a skimmer bx and then put thrugh the separatr t get any remaining il. The area arund a 2 phase decanter is less cmplicated as there is n water t deal with. If the decanter design is gd, 2 r 3 phase will have very similar extractin. What can be a much larger variable is the paste preparatin.

14 AOA 2017 Cnference 2 Phase & 3 Phase Decanters START UP Fill the decanter with water. Start pumping paste int the decanter very slwly. Adding water n start up can be helpful. Blckages ften happen at start-up. (blcked spear) Once the decanter is accepting the paste increase the flw t apprximately half the decanters capacity. Wait fr il t flw frm the il utlet s yu can examine it. Depending the cnditin f the il, slwly increase the speed f the decanter until yu reach yur chsen paste speed. If pssible test the waste every 15 mins in the first hur with an NIR machine. Every hur after that.

Many things must be cnsidered when setting the speed f the decanter: Prcessing speeds vary The capacity f the malaxers The temperature f the fruit entering the malaxers The capacity f the heating system t warm the fruit Temperature f the paste The misture cntent f the fruit Setting f the dam plates
