The types of ballasts are the general type (low P.F. type and high P.F. type), the fixed power type and the low starting current type and the respective starting characteristics are shown in the graph in the right. For the general type and the low starting current type, a starting current of 1.2 to 1.8 times of the rated current flows through the ballast for the first few minutes. Besides, the starting current of the fixed power type is lower than the ballast. The high P.F. type is inserted in a power factor adjustment capacitor in parallel with the power source, which causes an inrush current at the moment of starting. When a magnetic contactor is used, the point of consideration is the durability of the magnetic contactor against over current.
