1 Accunting fr Next Generatin Ship Weights This paper extends the cncept as riginally psted at the grup t take accunt f the suggestins made by Gerge Recker Jr and Terry Shannn, I d like t thank them fr their useful ideas, as well as the thers wh have cntributed t this interesting debate s far. This shws my verall suggestins fr wh t deal with the mass f Next Generatin ships. My basic desire is t prvide suggestins that allw t make use f the cann displacement figures. The paper details my suggestins, and shws the effect that each has in absrbing sme f the mass f the Galaxy Class Design. I m describing the cnstructin rule cncepts I m suggesting, and demnstrating them by cnstructing a Galaxy ship using thse cncepts. In simple terms these ideas add additinal nn cmbat related mass t the riginal FASA displacement, as a result we end up with three distinct ificatins f displacement: STANDARD - Traditinal FASA weight (including new systems fr SIF and Dcking) UNLADEN - STANDARD mass with the additin f nn cmbat equipment (i.e. Crew facilities and Science/Sensrs facilties) LADEN - UNLADEN mass with the additin f carg and fuel Standard wuld crrespnd t the idea f a fighting mass as suggested at the grup. This apprach will als allw existing FASA vessels t be easily adapted, as will be shwn later. 2 New Equipment Structural Integrity Field/Emergency Frcefields The SIF/EF cncept is ne slutin fr such a system culd wrk in the game, and mre imprtantly, what it culd cst in terms f and mass. The cst is 1 per size, but als 500mt per, s it basically adds a 33% t weight. I ve als extended the idea t include emergency shielding fr hull breaches, as that wuld therwise require a separate system. SIF/EF Classes Standard Pwer Used Full Pwer Used Mass SIFA SIFB SIFC SIFD SIFE SIFF SIFG I m assuming that the SIF/EF system wuld give the fllwing benefits when used in different pwer mdes: When Unpwered N effect all damage applies as per standard rules Standard Pwer Reduces damage caused by stress, and reduces crew casualties frm cmbat by 50% Full Pwer As Standard Pwer, but als reduces damage frm cmbat. There may als be scpe t add a further mdifier t the Ships PE and D as a result f this system being fitted. Hull Separatin Mechanism The hull separatin mechanism wuld be fitted t all vessels with a hull that can be separated, but crucially is capable f being recnnected withut dckyard supprt. Older vessels such as the Cnsitutin r D7 wuld nt require this mechanism as they are nt capable f having their cmmand hulls reattached withut dckyard assistance, ships such as the Galaxy are capable f rutine reattachment withut external supprt. Ships such as the Prmetheus wuld be fitted with multiple sets f this equipment cnnecting each pair f sectins. Steve Bacn Page 2 f 7 25 April 2004

3 The mass cst fr a ship with tw hull sectins wuld be: Mass Cst Pwer required t separate/recnnect 2% f maximum mass (split evenly between the tw sectins) 2 (1 pint allcated t each sectin) 2 (1 pint fr each sectin invlved) A ship with three hull sectins wuld have duble this cst, and wuld require 4 pints f pwer t separate r recnnect as tw pairs f dcking mechanisms are required Standard Ship Equipment Much f the equipment n the Galaxy Class has had t be created specially fr this example, but WER, IER, DPC, SER and WDF figures are crrect, t ensure D and WDF are bth crrect. The mass f the warp drive may seem high at 600,000mt, but this is nly 13% f the LADEN displacement f the Galaxy, while the 100,000mt FWG-1 represents sme 55% f the FASA Enterprise LADEN displacement. Basic Ship Cnstructin The basic cnstructin f the Cmbined Galaxy ship in this example is as fllws: Ship weight 32 (maximum 4,500,000mt) Cntrl Cmputers 3 x M10 Ttalling 66,000mt and 18 Warp Drive 2 x FWX-2 Ttalling 600,000mt and 60. Pwer Output = 80 each, Mvement rati 12/1, WER 19.1 Impulse Drive 2 x FIX-4 Ttalling 50,000mt and 0.2. Pwer Output = 60 each, BUT nly ne engine can be used while ship is in cmbined flight mde. Mvement rati 12/1 IER 7.2 (IER nly allws fr use f ne engine) Shields 2 x SFX Ttalling 10,000mt and 10. BUT nly ne shield system can be used while ship is in cmbined flight mde. Shield efficiency rating 4, DPC 11, Maximum pwer = 30. (SER and DPC nly allws fr use f ne shield system) PE PE = ( ) x 4 = Structural Integrity field SIF-G, 32 ( mass ). Mass is nt cunted here, but when mass is calculated yu need t multiply the scre by 2000 nt Pwer requirement is 14 standard, 28 full. Saucer Separatin Mechanism Requires 2 ( hull sectin invlved) and 90,000 mt (2% f maximum weight f 4,500,000mt) Primary Hull Phasers Steve Bacn Page 3 f 7 25 April 2004

4 The main phaser array cnsists f 4 FMH-15, in ttal weighing 3,800mt and requiring WDF is 156. Secndary Hull Phasers The secndary hull phaser arrays cnsist f 12 FH-20s, in ttal weighing 8,100mt and requiring WDF is Phtn trpedes The ship carries 3 FP-X phtn trped systems weighing 1,440mt in ttal and requiring 12. Ttal WDF is 75, but as ne launcher cannt be used in cmbined flight mde we nly cunt tw f the launchers twards the WDF scre. Ttal WDF 33.1 Cmpnent Mass 829,340mt Required Additinal 94.2 Ttal 307 Mass 307 x 2000 (as SIF/EF is fitted) = 614,000mt STANDARD DISPLACEMENT 1,443,340mt D (307x1.43) = CE Mving t UNLADEN DISPLACEMENT T mve t UNLADEN displacement frm STANDARD displacement we need t add the mass f the nn-cmbat facilities. As stated earlier UNLADEN displacement represents the mass f all ships systems (bth cmbat and nn cmbat), but excludes carg and fuel. Crew/Science Facilities Instead f creating lts f tables fr Crew facilties, sensrs and science equipment (ie all nn cmbat stuff) I ve gne fr a simpler apprach. The crew facilities and science/sensrs are basically percentage mdifiers t the maximum weight f the ship. Mdifiers range frm 0% t +30% depending n the ship and era. I see the baseline being the TOS era ships at 0%, the Enterprise D is 25% fr bth. This serves t represent the tremendus advancements made t sensrs, science equipment (fr example Stellar Cartgraphy n the Enterprise D), crew quarters (staterms fr all crew n the Enterprise D cmpared t bunk rms n the Enterprise A) and crew amenities (hldecks n the Enterprise-D). This des nt mean that TOS era ships did nt have crew r science facilities, but rather the facilities abard thse early ships are the baseline which later nes are measured by Steve Bacn Page 4 f 7 25 April 2004

Crew Package F equates t 25% f maximum weight, r 1,125,000mt. Science Package F equates t 25% f maximum weight, r 1,125,000mt. In ttal these tw packages cme in at 2,250,000mt r half the ttal mass. STANDARD DISPLACEMENT WAS 1,443,340mt UNLADEN DISPLACEMENT IS 3,693,340mt Mving t LADEN displacement T mve t LADEN displacement frm UNLADEN displacement we need t add the ttal mass f carg and fuel that is usually carried. 6 Carg The carg weights we have previusly used were based n TOS levels f crew luxury and persnal space. The mre vluminus quarters abard TNG era ships will allw mre persnal pssessins, and we als need t allw fr raw material carried fr replicatrs fr crew members. Additinally a new categry f passenger has been added, Evacuatin, we need t allw fr emergency supplies carried fr when a ship is used in an emergency evacuatin. Such supplies wuld be carried as in an evacuatin situatin replicatr pwer may nt be available. Carg required (mt) per year Crew 11 Passengers 9 Trps 13 Evacuatin 5 Previus FASA publicatins suggested the carriage f 5,000mt f spares abard military ships, and 10,000mt abard science ships. The dual rle f the Explrer suggests that all ships in that categry shuld carry 15,000mt f spares. The descriptin f the missin f the explrer in the TNG technical manual als suggests that Explrers carry ff ladable fuel and carg t supprt remte statins, such carg will als be need t allwed fr. This additinal displacement is added simply t the STANDARD (FASA) displacement by the additin f Nn cmbat systems as a percentage relative t maximum weight t find the UNLADEN displacement, and by including carg t find the LADEN displacement. The suggested hull separatin mechanism is a simple slutin t the issue, and can als be applied t vessels such as Prmetheus with its multi vectr assault mde, and Ptlemy as the way the carg pds are attached. The SIF/EF cncept needs refinement, but des again give a simple way t add this aspect t the game withut ver cmplicating cnstructin r gameplay. This is nly ne slutin t the issue, but it des serve t address the main cncerns raised: Hw can we build TNG era ships that are nt excessive in terms f and CE Hw can we mdify the system t allw fr systems that FASA excluded TOS era ships TOS era ships are unaffected by these changes, and can be played as nrmal. Players may wish t add a laden displacement figure which includes the carg. Fr the majrity f FASA ships this will nt affect the they are in, as mst FASA ships are at the lw end f their mass range fr their.
