7 Manal Openmg - AH Breakers All breakers, manal and electrical, are eqipped with a mechanical TRIP btton located on the breaker esctcheon. Manal opening is accomplished by displacing a mechanism latch that allows the toggle linkage, which holds the breaker's moveable contacts in the closed position, to collapse. Manal Stored Energy Closing AKR-3, -5 and AKRT-5 This circit breaker has a closing spring which is charged by a nmber of handle strokes (from one to for) depending on the angle throgh which the handle is rotated. Upon completion of the charging action, the springs are "propped" in the flly charged position and are discharged only by removing the "prop," releasing the spring to close the breaker. Closing is initiated by depressing a mechanical close btton on the esctcheon. 6 This circit breaker is closed by first rotating the handle conterclockwise approximately 1 degrees; this resets the mechanism and partially charges the closing spring. Retrning the handle clockwise to the normal position completes the spring charging and drives the toggle mechanism overcenter, closing the contacts. Manal Stored Energy Closing AKR-75 and -1 This circit breaker reqires for handle strokes to charge the springs. Unlike the smaller AKR frame sizes, the breaker's contacts close dring the forth handle stroke. Initiation of closing by separate close btton is not available. www. 8 ::Jectrical Opening All breakers, manal and electrical, are eqipped with a mechanical TRIP btton located on the breaker esctcheon. Electrical breakers inclde a shnt trip device for remote opening. Electrical Stored Energy AKR-3. -5, -75 & 1 This electrically operated breaker tilizes a motor to atomatically keep the closing springs in a charged state. Whenever the control solenoid is energized, its operation releases the closing springs, closing the breaker contacts. (For typical electrical circit see pg. 38) Electrical Storeti f.negy -\K-25 and AKRiU)<3S Featres and Characteristics lectrical Ooerat1on This electrically operated breaker closes whenever the closing solenoid coil is energized. This cases an pward movement of the solenoid armatre which charges the springs to a predetermined over-center point for closing. (For typical electrical circit see pg. 38.) The initiation of the closing operation for both of the above types of breakers is by closing of a contact of a remote switch, relay or a close btton in the front esctcheon if the breaker is so eqipped. The breakers control schemes have an antipmp featre which allows only one closre of the breaker for a single operation of the closing contact no matter how long the contact may be held closed. This prevents the repeated operations that wold ense if one of the atomatic trip devices was activated at the time of closing. A manal closing handle is provided for maintenance prposes. All electrically operated breakers close within five cycles. www. ElectricalPartManals ElectricalPartManals. com com 7

11 Type AKR breakers, both for stationary and sbstrctre draw ot monted designs are available, and are UL Iisted to ANSI C37.16 standards. The sbstrctre is the eqipment monted component of a closed-door draw ot breaker nit. Serving as the stationary receptacle, it provides means for monting and connecting (both primary and secondary) the draw ot breaker (removable element). The basic sbstrctre is a self-contained, factory-aligned frame-work designed for convenient monting as individal breaker compartments of switchboard or switchgear eqipments. In conjnction with a line of accessories, 1 it offers the eqipment bilder all the mechanical and electrical components necessary to otfit a compartment for closed-door draw ot AKR breakers. All AKR sbstrctre breakers (draw ot monting type "D" for AKR-3 and -5 and type "F" for AKR-75 and 1 ) are eqipped with extended ("deep") esctcheons. This configration allows the breaker to be racked between the CON NECTED, TEST, and DIS CONNECT positions withot the need to open the compartment door. On all frame sizes the draw ot mechanism is breaker monted. The racking handle is inserted throgh the breaker esctcheon on AKR-3 and -5, and throgh the compartment door on the AKR-3S, -75, and -1. As the rack ot handle is trned, it rotates slotted racking arms or cams on each side of the breaker frame. The cams engage fixed pins monted on both sides of the sbstrctre, moving the breaker in and ot. The draw ot operation featres for positions. In the CONNECTED position the primary and secondary disconnects are flly engaged. The breaker mst be opened before it can be racked in or ot of this position. When in the TEST position, the primary disconnects are disengaged, bt the secondary disconnects remain engaged. This permits breaker operation withot energizing the primary circit. In the DISCONNECT position neither primary nor secondary disconnects are engaged. Breakers may be racked between these three positions with the compartment door closed. Each position is clearly identified by markings which appear on the left side of the esctcheon as it emerges throgh the door ct ot. With the door open, the breaker can be plled ot manally from the disconnected position. www. ElectricalPartManals ElectricalPartManals. com com

13 The RMS-9 MicroVersaTrip system for AKR low voltage power circit breakers?onsists of for parts: plg-in protection programmer, flxshift trip device, crrent sensors and rating plgs. The programmer contains a crrent sensor-powered, solid-state logic nit and incorporates rotary adjsment switches for p to nme fnctions, as well as targets for mechanical falt trip indication. MicroVersaTrip RMS-9 represents the latest technology in digital solid-state programmers. RMS Digital Sensing of Sinsoidal and Nonsinsoidal The RMS-9 provides accrate overload protection for both sinsoidal and nonsinsoidal crrents by direct measrement of the tre rms content of the crr.ent wave. This is accomplished by microprocessor digital sampling techniqes. F IOd <::rrl'rl\ Sensor 12 Therefore, the solid state microprocessor is not affected by component tolerance and does not reqire compensation for signal distortion. Since the design is based on complimentary metal oxide (CMOS) technology, it is less sensitive to extraneos noise prodced by lighting, instrmentation, radio, etc. The solid state microprocessor technology and fast analog to digital converters make it possible to measre the magnitde of the phase crrent over a nmber of time periods within the cycle. The RMS-9 sampling rate of 27 per cycle for each phase allows for errors of less than 1% on systems with distortions throgh the 13th harmonic. This digital sampling techniqe provides the most accrate system protection fo distribtion systems that mclde ac and de variable speed drives, rectifiers, indction heating, and other loads MicroVersaTrip that case non-sinsoidal crrents. Type AKR power circit breakers are available with High Range Instantaneos, No Instantaneos, or Switchable (OFF) Instantaneos, and Grond Falt. All programmers inclde a clear plastic cover with provisions for sealing for tamper-proof installation. Flx-shift Trip Device The flx-shifter is a low energy, positive action trpping device that is atomatically powered and controlled by RMS-9 System Components the protection programmer. The low energy signal from the programmer conteracts the strength of a permanent magnet in the flx-shifter, allowing a spring to nseal the magnet and trip the breaker. Crrent Sensors Three toroidal crrent sensors provide maximm flexibility and reliability with minimm signal error. Crrent sensor ratios are shown in Table 3.1, page 3. 17 Trip Devices MicroVersaTnp" RMS-9 Tripping Fnctions Long-Time Fnction Moving from left to right on the crrent axis, Figre 16.1, the pper part of the time crrent crve is the longtime pickp. This is the fnction sed to protect a circit against low magnitde overcrrents. The breaker trips becase the crrent has exceeded the long-time setting. If a breaker is protecting a motor, the start-p srge (in-rsh crrent) can be accommodated by setting the breaker to allow for a momentary delay while the motor has a chance to reach its normal operating speed or fll load crrent. Short-Time Fnction The middle portion of the crve is the short-time fnction. It is sed to protect against higher magnitde overcrrents and low-level short circit falts. Overcrrent de to short circits is generally in the order of 1 or more times fll-load crrent, and is measred as symmetrical RMS (root mean sqare) short-circit crrent. Instantaneos Fnction At the bottom of the time crrent crve is the protective device's instantaneos fnction. The instantaneos trip point determines the level at which the breaker will trip withot an intentional time delay. This immediate interrption occrs only as a reslt of a severe overcrrent condition, sch as a high-level short circit, that wold damage the electrical system if not interrpted. An instantaneos trip can be adjstable, depending pon the application. 16 _, "" 1 a.. a " a.. a " a.. a " a " a " 9 ' ' 7 a a 9 ' 7 ' ' ' ' ' '. 18 I Ft Fnction An Ft fnction is available with MicroVersaTrip. This provides a ramp fnction Wt =constant) in the shorttime and grond falt characteristic (See Fig. 16.1) that allows maximm coordination with downstream thermal-magnetic protective devices that follow a crve instead of a sqare path. The 12t fnction also allows tighter motor protection by accommodating the transient inrsh while the shorttime pickp remains jst slightly higher than the steady state starting crrent. In other words, the path follows the hypotense instead of the right angle. When the sqare short-time path might intersect with a downstream fse or breaker, the l2t fnction permits the short-time delay path to veer in front of the time crrent crve for the downstream device. Withot this fnction, coordination and selectivity wold be difficlt to attain. Grond Falt Protection A grond falt is nintentional crrent flowing from a circit throgh a condcting path to grond. It is sally of a low magnitde (less than the long-time pickp vale) and not sensed by the protective device. Using modern electronic trip devices, protection against grond falts can be bilt into a distribtion protection system with grond falt pickp and delay fnctions added to the circit breaker's falt interrpting capability. Before electronic trips came on the scene, a complex collection of external relays and crrent sensors were needed to sense a grond falt and signal a breaker to trip. Eight grond falt pickp levels and three delay bands with l2t in and ot to allow fll selectivity, insring that only the breaker closest to the grond falt will trip. Addition of zone selective interlocking for the grond falt fnction frther enhances this protection by permitting "timed" tripping and closer back-p protection. g 1 t g,' '"I!""g'g""!- f-+-++-i'h t---1 '" GROUND FAULT R!E PICKUP I OFF GROUND 2 FAULT DELAY T IN 12T OUT l: t.: [/ MA MA INT INT f\ I' I OlfT rdt' : I : EJggg LoT '1-+++W----t"d-t--H- ie Ma LVPCB 1-- MC & ICCB Moo 1},..._ LVPCB - LVPCB MC &!CCB Fig 17.1 Time Crrent Crve Definition Grond Falt 17 www. 19 Type AKR Breakers Trip Devices MicroVersaTrip R Crrent Setting (Standard) The adjstable crrent setting determines the nominal long time crrent setting with a ± 1 % band width. With a 1.1 setting the breaker will carry indefinitely withot tripping the rating plg rating. Changing the setting changes the norminal crrent rating for the breaker. Long-Time Delay (Standard) This long-time delay adjstment varies the time it will take the breaker to trip nder sstained overload conditions. It provides the fnction of withstanding momentary overloads sch as motor starting, welding, or other overcrrent conditions withot interrpting the service. RMS-9 Tripping Fnctions Long-Time Pickp Light (Standard) The long-time pickp light provides visal indication that the breaker is experiencing an overload condition. Indication is provided by a light-emitting diode (LED) which is only activated prior to trip-ot and dring long-time time-ot. Saves test and system start p time. Short-Time Pickp (Optional) This short-time pickp adjstment controls the level of high crrent the breaker can carry for short periods of time withot tripping. Permits downstream breakers to clear short circit falts withot tripping ot the pstream protective device. 18 CURRENT SETTING 1.1 SETTING( C) LONG TIME DELAY 2 3,. DELAY RATING PLUG CAT. NO. 20 Short-Time Delay (Optional) Adjstable Instantaneos Pickp (Standard) The short-time delay adjstment is sed in conjnction with the short-time pickp setting to provide a frther refinement of coordination between circit breakers. It establishes the time interval the breaker will wait before responding to the shortcircit crrent level selected on the short-time trip point adjstment. The instantaneos trip point determines the level at which the breaker will trip withot intentional time delay (.25 seconds or less). 21 Trip Devices Contined High Range Instantaneos Grond Falt Pickp and Grond Falt Delay (Optional) The grond falt pickp adjstment controls the level of grond falt crrent at which circit interrption will occr. To comply with the 1981 National Electrical Code (NEC 23-95), no trip point exceeds 12 amperes. The common sqare knee of the crve can be replaced with an l2t fnction to facilitate coordination with downstream devices sch as thermalmagnetic breakers and fses whose time-crrent crves do not easily relate to the sqare-shape sensing characteristics common to solid state trip devices. Memory Circit Becase of the highly intermittent and erratic natre of arcing grond falts, a memory circit has been incorporated in all MicroVersaTrip grond falt sensing circits as standard. The memory circit integrates arcing falt crrent with time, essentially smming the intermittent grond crrent spikes. In the 2 Incldes adjstable shorttime pickp, adjstable short-time delay and a highlevel instantaneos setting is adjstable in for steps from 4 to 1 percent of the circit breaker frame The grond falt delay adjstment is sed to add a pre-determined delay in time to the trip point once the grond falt pickp level has been reached. This provides tripping selectivity between main and feeder or other downstream breakers. The grond falt nit also incldes as standard an inverse 12t ramp to sbstantially improve coordination with downstream protective devices sch as fses and thermal magnetic circit breakers. diagrams, it can be seen how the memory fnction works. 22 Falt Trip Indicators Indicators are designed to redce system downtime by analyzing any overcrrent falt and identifying its case. Mechanical pop-ot type indicators are available on the programmer for identifying overload or short circit overcrrent falts when breakers are ordered withot integral grond falt protection. Indicators are available to identify overload, short circit and grond falt trips - for breakers spplied with integral grond falt protection. Zone Selective Interlocking The standard means of obtaining selectivity between main and feeder breakers is by incorporating programmers with timecoordinated trip characteristics. This consists of setting the farthest downstream breaker with a small time delay, and progressively increasing the time delay as yo get closer to the main protective device. The disadvantage in this method is that the system mst now endre the stress of the high crrent falt ntil time-ot occrs. The Zone Selective Interlock modle, Figre 21.1, receives a signal from a downstream MicroVersaTrip programmer (Logic ) which cases the modle to transmit a low-level interlock signal to a MicroVersaTrip programmer pstream. The interlock signal activates the LED portion of an LED- OVERLOAD Transistor Opto-isolator in the pstream programmer casing the fixed delay band to shift from "MIN" to the programmer delay band setting Figre Both the Short-Time and Grond Falt fnctions are capable of being interlocked. Zone Selective Interlocking is available for the shorttime fnction and the grond falt fnction, or for the grond falt fnction only. Three basic characteristics: long-time delay, shorttime delay and instantaneos, can be sed in varios combinations to sit the application. Type EC-2A Trip Device for 6-2 amp frame breakers. Available in combinations of long-time and instantaneos elements, or instantaneos alone. Table 22.1 Adjstment Ranges for EC Trip Devices Long-Time Delayis accomplished with a positive-displacement oil piston. Sealing of the assembly eliminates variations cased by atmospheric contamination, and silicone oil minimizes variations in time delay de to changes in ambient temperatre. Short-Time Delay is accomplished with a rgged mechanical escapement. Type EC-1 lnstantaneostripping is obtained when a tension spring yields to the force exerted on the magnetic armatre at short circit crrent levels, permitting the armatre to move independently of the time delay piston. AKR breakers with EC trips are for se on DC system voltages, and are available in ratings of 4-6 amperes. One EC trip device Trip Device for 6-2 amp frame breakers. Combines long-time and short-time elements for intentional delay p to the short-time rating of the breaker. Instantaneos may be added.
