7 Sectin 4 TRAINEE PREPARATION 4.1. Licensing Requirements Trainee must have in his/her pssessin a valid state driver s license AF Frm 171, Request fr Driver s Training and Additin t U.S. Gvernment Drivers IAW Air Frce Instructin (AFI) , Vehicle Operatins Applicable lcal licensing jurisdictin requirements Required Reading This entire lessn plan AFMAN , Chapters 1-5, 7-9 and Manufacturer s Operatr s Manual. Sectin 5 KNOWLEDGE LECTURE AND EVALUATION 5.1. Knwledge Overview (Lecture) The Air Frce uses a variety f different deicer trucks in rder t accmplish its missin. Training and licensing is a requirement t ensure the peratr can perate the deicer safely and prficiently in rder t ensure the safe and timely peratin f aircraft while preventing flightline mishaps. A deicer truck is designed t remve cmpacted snw and ice ff an aircraft in rder t prepare the aircraft fr flight. T meet this missin requirement, the truck is equipped with chemical deicing agents which are able t melt dwn thrugh snw and ice t the hard surface f the aircraft, undercutting and lsening the snw and ice by lwering the freezing pint f water. The fllwing are safety items and prcedures t be fllwed during deicer peratins. Additinally, the vehicle itself may have warning, cautins, and danger stickers that the Vehicle Operatr shuld be aware f General safety and precautins Operatr and passengers shall wear seat belts as prvided Wear apprpriate persnal prtective equipment Obstacles and hazards. Check the wrk area fr bstacles that can cause lss f cntrl t the vehicle: hles, bjects, slippery surfaces, rugh spts, etc. Plan the apprach f the vehicle t and frm the aircraft t avid these hazards Overhead clearance. 15 Mst anti-icing, deicing and defrsting fluids are mildly txic. Cntact with the skin r eyes shuld be avided. Avid prlnged expsure Be aware f the flash temperature f the fluid. Take care t insure that the fluids are kept away frm sparks, fire and xidizing agents Wear adequate eye prtectin when applying deicing fluids Deicing fluids cntaining ethylene glycl (MIL-A-8243, Type II) have been fund t cause severe spalling f Prtland cement cncrete pavements. This damage may be prevented r minimized by treating such pavements prir t expsure with light seal cats f emulsified linseed il The presence f either deicing r anti-icing fluids arund Liquid Oxygen (LOX) servicing/verflw areas can result in a ptential fire. Prir t LOX servicing, the fluids shall be remved frm areas adjacent t the LOX filler and verflw tubes by flushing r wiping methds Special care shall be exercised t prevent the excess use f fluids arund cabin heater and/r ventilatr air intake ducts r arund the intakes f the engines and APU s. This precautin is essential t minimize the pssibility f txic fumes entering the cabin r cckpit during taxi prir t takeff. On sme aircraft, the engine bleed culd be clsed fr a shrt perid fr dryut, befre takeff must be apprved by the respective Aircraft Single Manager (AF) r PMA (United States Navy) Extreme cautin must be exercised in the use f glycl-water slutins (including MIL-A-8243, SAE AMS 1424, Type I, and SAE AMS 1428, Type II,/IV Fluids) in and arund aircraft having silver r silver-cated electrical/electrnic circuitry. Rapid xidatin and fire can ccur when glycl-water slutins cme in cntact with and shrt acrss bare r defectively insulated silver r silver-cated electrical circuits such as wiring, switches, circuit breakers, etc., which are carrying Direct Current (DC) Deicing peratins safety verview Use sptters/marshalars when appraching the aircraft, backing, etc. Nte: A sptter(s)/marshalar(s) is required within 25 feet f the aircraft. A sptter/marshalar shuld be psitined in a safe area and trained IAW AFMAN Wing walkers are required at each wing tip when taxiing aircraft frm an bstructed area r when the bstructin is within 25 feet f the aircraft When deicing any prtin f an aircraft by spray methd, all ther maintenance peratins t the aircraft shall be suspended. All but deicing persnnel shall vacate aircraft vicinity during the deicing prcess.

Damage can ccur if flaps are raised prir t this area being checked and cleaned as required During heavy r extended participatin, check fr accumulatin in cavities, such as slts, balance bays, r wing and stabilizer rear spar areas Under freezing fg r ther similar precipitatin cnditins, it may be necessary fr the frnt and rear side f engine fan blades t be checked fr ice buildup prir t starting the engine. Any depsits fund shall be remved as recmmended by the USAF Aircraft Single Manager Deicer Vehicle Operatin Start-up prcedures Make sure autmatic transmissin is in neutral and emergency/parking brake is set Use ignitin switch t start the truck engine. Allw engine t warm-up Allw air brake pressure t build-up Start auxiliary engine using the cab cntrl auxiliary engine ignitin switch. Wait fr glw plug light t g ut, let engine warm-up. See Manufacturer s Operatr s Manual fr additinal instructins Activate pumping system by turning pump switch t n. After a few secnds, the auxiliary engine speed shuld be increased t 2100 rpm. See Manufacturer s Operatr s Manual fr additinal instructins Activate the heating system by turning heater switch n.

21 Aircraft flight deck windws, cabin windws, windscreen, seals, plexiglass, and plastic can be damaged by direct applicatin f HABS/ht deicing fluid. D nt apply ht air r deicing fluid directly t windws, windscreen, seals, plexiglass, r plastic surfaces. Cntact with windws, windscreen, seals, plexiglass, r plastic will cause surface t glaze r sften Sharp instruments such as picks, knives, r screwdrivers shall nt be used t lsen ice frmatin frm aircraft surfaces. Failure t cmply may cause damage t aircraft Ensure deicing truck fluid heater (TM1800 nly) is turned ff prir t appraching the aircraft t perfrm deicing task. Failure t cmply may cause injury t persnnel and damage t aircraft All drs and hatches shall be clsed prir t beginning deicing prcedures. Failure t cmply may cause damage t aircraft and equipment When using multiple vehicles t deice/anti-ice aircraft, supervisrs are t ensure safe and effective applicatin f deicing/anti-icing fluids. Supervisr will determine safest and mst effective path and brief team members prir t deicing peratins. See Figure 5.3. fr an example f a multi-vehicle deicing path. Figure 5.3. 22 Snw and ice remval vehicles, with cabs/nzzles at maximum extensin and psitined belw hrizntal stabilizer, require fluids t be sprayed in an upward, arching pattern, resulting in lss f fluid effectiveness due t heat lss, inadequate pressure and imprper applicatin angle. When this task is used t deice hrizntal stabilizer, a visual inspectin is required t ensure all freezing precipitatin r frst cntaminatin is remved Always spray either perpendicular t surface r frm frward t aft f aircraft surface. Spraying deicing fluid frm rear t frnt f a wing r tail surface may result in water r deicing fluid being trapped in cntrl surface cavities. Failure t cmply may cause injury t persnnel and damage t aircraft Cmmunicatin Cmmunicatin between deicing supervisr and deicing vehicle driver shall be maintained at all times during this prcedure. Failure t cmply may cause injury t persnnel and damage t aircraft and equipment Cmmunicatin between deicing vehicle driver and bm peratr shall be maintained at all times during this prcedure. Failure t cmply may cause injury t persnnel and damage t aircraft and equipment Additinal items Flightline rules and regulatins (when applicable). Refer t AFMAN , AFI , Airfield Driving and lcal flightline prcedures Fire extinguisher training. Deicers are equipped with fire extinguishers and training is required annually. The supervisr r Squadrn VCO will schedule training with the lcal Fire Department. The fire extinguisher itself must be inspected t ensure current inspectin date, ensure needle is psitined in the green and ensure it is securely munted Lcal Plicies and Prcedures. Understand lcal plicies and prcedures in regards t deicer peratins. If at a temprary duty lcatin, take the time t learn the plicies and prcedures fr the current lcatin. Sectin 6 EXPLANATION AND DEMONSTRATION 6.1. Instructr s Preparatin Establish a training lcatin Obtain apprpriate vehicle peratr s manual, TOs and lcal guidance Reserve a deicer.
