Use extreme care and slw speeds while driving the machine in a stwed psitin acrss uneven terrain, debris, unstable r slippery surfaces and near hles and drp-ffs. D nt use the platfrm cntrls t free a platfrm that is caught, snagged r therwise prevented frm nrmal mtin by an adjacent structure. All persnnel must be remved frm the platfrm befre attempting t free the platfrm using the grund cntrls. D nt depend n the tilt alarm as a level indicatr. The tilt alarm sunds n the chassis nly when the machine is n a slpe. If the tilt alarm sunds: Lwer the platfrm. Mve the machine t a firm, level surface. D nt use batteries that weigh less than the riginal equipment. Batteries are used as cunterweight and are critical t machine stability. Each battery must weigh 65 punds / 29.5 kg. The machine must be n level surface r secured befre releasing the brakes. It is recmmended that peratrs wear an apprved hard hat when perating the machine. Be sure all maintenance has been perfrmed as specified in this manual and the Genie GS-1530 & GS-1930 Service Manual. Be sure all decals are in place and legible. Be sure the peratr s, safety, and respnsibilities manuals are cmplete, legible and in the strage cntainer lcated n the platfrm. Bdily Injury Hazard D nt perate the machine with a hydraulic il r air leak. An air leak r hydraulic leak can penetrate and/r burn skin. Cmpnent Damage Hazard D nt use any battery charger greater than 24V t charge the batteries. Electrcutin Hazards Cnnect the battery charger t a grunded, AC 3-wire electrical utlet nly. Inspect daily fr damaged crd, cables and wires. Replace damaged items befre perating. Avid spilling r cntacting battery acid. Neutralize battery acid spills with baking sda and water. D Nt Operate Unless: Yu learn and practice the principles f safe machine peratin cntained in this peratr's manual. 1 Avid hazardus situatins. 2 Always perfrm a pre-peratin inspectin. Knw and understand the pre-peratin inspectin befre ging n t the next sectin. 3 Always perfrm functin tests prir t use. 4 Inspect the wrkplace. 5 Only use the machine as it was intended. The Pre-peratin Inspectin is a visual inspectin perfrmed by the peratr prir t each wrk shift. The inspectin is designed t discver if anything is apparently wrng with a machine befre the peratr perfrms the functin tests. The Pre-peratin Inspectin als serves t determine if rutine maintenance prcedures are required. Only rutine maintenance items specified in this manual may be perfrmed by the peratr. Refer t the list n the next page and check each f the items and lcatins fr mdificatins, damage r lse r missing parts. A damaged r mdified machine must never be used. If damage r any variatin frm factry delivered cnditin is discvered, the machine must be tagged and remved frm service. Repairs t the machine may nly be made by a qualified service technician, accrding t the manufacturer's specificatins. After repairs are cmpleted, the peratr must perfrm a pre-peratin inspectin again befre ging n t the functin tests. Scheduled maintenance inspectins shall be perfrmed by qualified service technicians, accrding t the manufacturer's specificatins and the requirements listed in the respnsibilities manual. 14 Operatr's Manual First Editin Eleventh Printing PRE-OPERATION INSPECTION Pre-peratin Inspectin Be sure that the peratr's, safety and respnsibilities manuals are cmplete, legible and in the strage cntainer lcated n the platfrm. Be sure that all decals are legible and in place. See Decals sectin. Check fr hydraulic il leaks and prper il level. Add il if needed. See Maintenance sectin. Check fr battery fluid leaks and prper fluid level. Add distilled water if needed. See Maintenance sectin. Check the fllwing cmpnents r areas fr damage, mdificatins and imprperly installed r missing parts: Check entire machine fr: Cracks in welds r structural cmpnents Dents r damage t machine Be sure that all structural and ther critical cmpnents are present and all assciated fasteners and pins are in place and prperly tightened. Be sure side rails are installed and blts are fastened Be sure that the chassis trays are in place, latched and prperly cnnected. 15 First Editin Eleventh Printing Operatr's Manual Maintenance Check the Hydraulic Oil Level Observe and Obey: Only rutine maintenance items specified in this manual shall be perfrmed by the peratr. Scheduled maintenance inspectins shall be cmpleted by qualified service technicians, accrding t the manufacturer's specificatins and the requirements specified in the respnsibilities manual. Maintenance Symbls Legend The fllwing symbls have been used in this manual t help cmmunicate the intent f the instructins. When ne r mre f the symbls appear at the beginning f a maintenance prcedure, it cnveys the meaning belw. Maintaining the hydraulic il at the prper levels is essential t machine peratin. Imprper hydraulic il levels can damage hydraulic cmpnents. Daily checks allw the inspectr t identify changes in il level that might indicate the presence f hydraulic system prblems. Perfrm this prcedure with the platfrm in the stwed psitin. 1 Visually inspect the il level in the hydraulic tank thrugh the sight gauge in the side f the pwer unit mdule. Result: The hydraulic il level shuld be within the full and add marks n the il level indicatr decal. 2 Add il if necessary. D nt verfill. Imprper fluid levels r damaged cables and cnnectins can result in engine cmpnent damage and hazardus cnditins. This prcedure des nt need t be perfrmed n machines with sealed r maintenance-free batteries. Electrcutin hazard. Cntact with ht r live circuits may result in death r serius injury. Remve all rings, watches and ther jewelry. Bdily injury hazard. Batteries cntain acid. Avid spilling r cntacting battery acid. Neutralize battery acid spills with baking sda and water. Perfrm this test after fully charging the batteries. 1 Put n prtective clthing and eye wear. 2 Be sure that the battery cable cnnectins are free f crrsin. 3 Be sure that the battery hld dwns and cable cnnectins are tight. 4 Remve the battery vent caps. 5 Check the battery acid level f each battery. If needed, replenish with distilled water t the bttm f the battery fill tube. D nt verfill. 6 Install the vent caps. Scheduled Maintenance Maintenance perfrmed quarterly, annually and every tw years must be cmpleted by a persn trained and qualified t perfrm maintenance n this machine accrding t the prcedures fund in the service manual fr this machine. Test Emergency Stp 6 Push in the grund red Emergency Stp buttn t the OFF psitin. Result: N functins shuld perate. 7 Pull ut the red Emergency Stp buttn t the ON psitin. 18 Operatr's Manual First Editin Eleventh Printing FUNCTION TESTS Test the Up/Dwn Functins The audible warnings n this machine and the standard hrn all cme frm the same central alarm. The hrn is a cnstant tne. The descent alarm sunds at 60 beeps per minute. The alarm that ges ff when the pthle guards have nt deplyed sunds at 300 beeps per minute. The alarm that ges ff when the machine is nt level sunds at 600 beeps per minute. An ptinal autmtive-style hrn is als available. 8 Activate the up functin. Result: The platfrm shuld raise. 9 Activate the dwn functin. Result: The platfrm shuld lwer. The descent alarm shuld sund while the platfrm is lwering. Test the Manual Lwering 10 Activate the up functin and raise the platfrm apprximately 2 feet / 60 cm. 11 Pull the manual lwering knb lcated next t the grund cntrls. Result: The platfrm shuld lwer. The descent alarm will nt sund. 12 Turn the key switch t platfrm cntrl. At the Platfrm Cntrls Test Emergency Stp 13 Push in the platfrm red Emergency Stp buttn t the OFF psitin. Result: N functins shuld perate. Test the Hrn 14 Pull the red Emergency Stp buttn ut t the ON psitin. 15 Push the hrn buttn. Result: The hrn shuld sund. Test the Functin Enable Switch 16 D nt hld the functin enable switch n the cntrl handle. 17 Slwly mve the cntrl handle in the directin indicated by the blue arrw, then in the directin indicated by the yellw arrw. Result: N functins shuld perate. Test the Up/Dwn Functins 18 Press the lift functin select buttn. Press and hld the lift functin enable buttn. Mve the lift/drive selectr switch t the lift psitin (if equipped). 19 Press and hld the functin enable switch n the cntrl handle. 20 Slwly mve the cntrl handle in the directin indicated by the blue arrw. Result: The platfrm shuld raise. The pthle guards shuld deply. 21 Release the cntrl handle. Result: The platfrm shuld stp raising. 22 Press and hld the functin enable switch. 19 First Editin Eleventh Printing Operatr's Manual FUNCTION TESTS Result: The platfrm shuld lwer. The descent alarm shuld sund while the platfrm is lwering. CE mdels: When lwering the platfrm, the platfrm shuld stp when it is 7 feet / 2.1 m frm the grund. Be sure the area belw the platfrm is clear f persnnel and bstructins befre cntinuing. T cntinue lwering, release the cntrl handle, wait 5 secnds, then mve the cntrl handle again. Test the Steering Nte: When perfrming the steer and drive functin tests, stand in the platfrm facing the steer end f the machine. 23 Press the drive functin select switch. Mve the lift/drive selectr switch t the drive psitin (if equipped). 24 Press and hld the functin enable switch n the cntrl handle. 25 Depress the thumb rcker switch n tp f the cntrl handle in the directin identified by the blue triangle n the cntrl panel. Result: The steer wheels shuld turn in the directin that the blue triangle pints n the cntrl panel. 26 Depress the thumb rcker switch in the directin identified by the yellw triangle n the cntrl panel. Result: The steer wheels shuld turn in the directin that the yellw triangle pints n the cntrl panel. Test Drive and Braking 27 Press and hld the functin enable switch. 28 Slwly mve the cntrl handle in the directin indicated by the blue arrw n the cntrl panel until the machine begins t mve, then return the handle t the center psitin. Result: The machine shuld mve in the directin that the blue arrw pints n the cntrl panel, then cme t an abrupt stp. 29 Slwly mve the cntrl handle in the directin indicated by the yellw arrw n the cntrl panel until the machine begins t mve, then return the handle t the center psitin. Result: The machine shuld mve in the directin that the yellw arrw pints n the cntrl panel, then cme t an abrupt stp. Result: When the platfrm is raised 4 feet / 1.2 m frm the grund, the pthle guards shuld deply. 40 Press n the pthle guards n ne side, and then the ther. Result: The pthle guards shuld nt mve. 41 Lwer the platfrm. Result: The pthle guards shuld return t the stwed psitin. 42 Place a 2x4 r similar piece f wd under a pthle guard. Raise the platfrm. Errr Indicatr Light On If the errr indicatr light is n, push in and pull ut the red Emergency Stp buttn t reset the system. If the light stays n, tag and remve machine frm service. T Extend and Retract Platfrm 1 Step n the platfrm extensin release pedal n the platfrm tebard. 2 Grasp the platfrm guard rails carefully and push t extend the platfrm t the mid-psitin stp. 3 Step n the release pedal again and push t fully extend the platfrm. D nt stand n the platfrm extensin while trying t extend it. 4 Step n the platfrm extensin release pedal and pull t retract the platfrm t the midpsitin stp. Step again t fully retract the platfrm. Operatin Frm Grund with Cntrller Maintain safe distances between the peratr, machine and fixed bjects. Be aware f the directin the machine will travel when using the cntrller. After Each Use 1 Select a safe parking lcatin firm level surface, clear f bstructin and traffic. 2 Lwer the platfrm. 3 Turn the key switch t the ff psitin and remve the key t secure frm unauthrized use. 4 Chck the wheels. 5 Charge the batteries. Charge the battery in a well-ventilated area. Use prper AC input vltage fr charging as indicated n the charger. Use nly Genie authrized battery and charger. 1 Remve the battery vent caps and permanently remve the plastic seal frm the battery vent penings. 2 Fill each cell with battery acid (electrlyte) until the level is sufficient t cver the plates. D nt fill t maximum level until the battery charge cycle is cmplete. Overfilling can cause the battery acid t verflw during charging. Neutralize battery acid spills with baking sda and water. 3 Install the battery vent caps. 4 Charge the battery. 5 Check the battery acid level when the charging cycle is cmplete. Replenish with distilled water t the bttm f the fill tube. D nt verfill. T Charge Battery 1 Be sure the batteries are cnnected befre charging the batteries. 2 Open the battery cmpartment. The cmpartment shuld remain pen fr the entire charging cycle. 3 Remve the battery vent caps and check the battery acid level. If necessary, add nly enugh distilled water t cver the plates. D nt verfill prir t the charge cycle. 4 Replace the battery vent caps. 5 Cnnect the battery charger t a grunded AC circuit. 6 Turn the battery charger n. 7 The charger will indicate when the battery is fully charged. 8 Check the battery acid level when the charging cycle is cmplete. Observe and Obey: Cmmn sense and planning must be applied t cntrl the mvement f the machine when lifting it with a crane r frklift. The transprt vehicle must be parked n a level surface. The transprt vehicle must be secured t prevent rlling while the machine is being laded. Be sure vehicle capacity, lading surfaces and chains r straps are sufficient t withstand the machine weight. See Specificatins sectin. 3 Turn the brake release knb cunterclckwise t pen the brake valve. 4 Pump the brake release pump knb. After machine is laded: 1 Chck wheels t prevent machine frm rlling. 2 Turn the brake release knb clckwise t reset the brakes. Twing the Genie GS-1530 r the GS-1930 is nt recmmended.
