This newsletter will be published periodically to keep the museum's members, donors, volunteers and friends informed about museum acquisitions, preservation projects, events and interesting museum activities. The museum is extremely grateful to every person, organization and corporation who over the years has provided the support necessary for the museum to continue it s mission of preserving and presenting to the public the century long his- June, 2018 tory of Hagerstown's aviation industry. It is with your continued support that the museum will fly home it s C-123 and create the museum s first home on a site at the Hagerstown Regional Airport. The mission of the Hagerstown Aviation Museum is to preserve the history of Hagerstown, Maryland's aviation industry. This history spans more than 100 years of designing, building and flying aircraft that have played significant roles in world events. The museum has 21 historic aircraft in its collection, 16 of which were built in Hagerstown. One of the Hagerstown built aircraft is a 1956 Fairchild C-123 Provider. Fairchild Aircraft C-123 assembly line Fairchild C123 Providers were built from 1954 to 1958 at Fairchild Aircraft in Hagerstown, Maryland. These military aircraft were used during both the Cold War and the Vietnam War to trans- C-123 in use during the Vietnam War. port troops, cargo and vehicles. Today, only a few survive. 2 Page 2 Since the acquisition of Fairchild C-123 N681DG in November, 2012 much work has been accomplished. The largest and most involved project was repairing the control surfaces. In 2014, the rudder, elevators and ailerons, each the size of a small airplane wing, were removed and trucked to Hagerstown. Museum volunteers removed the old fabric, repaired the aluminum framework of each part and recovered these control surfaces with new fabric. Pegasus Flyer engine was successfully started. Control Surface Recover Team, April, 2015 A year later the finished parts were trucked back to Ft Lauderdale Executive Airport and reinstalled on the C-123. Work continued on the C-123 over the next two years and in May 2018, a crew from the museum, with the assistance of C-123 experts Bill Schillig and Bob Gbur from the Air Heritage Museum in Beaver Falls PA, traveled to Ft Lauderdale, FL to "wake up" the C-123 from its long winter s nap. See exhibits and other museum aircraft such as the 1928 Kreider Reisner KR-31 biplane, 1943 Fairchild PT-19 WWII Trainer and Fairchild 24, all built in Hagerstown, MD. The museum owns twenty historic aircraft, fourteen of which were built in Hagerstown. These historic aircraft are monuments to the men and women who built, flew and maintained these aircraft in times of war and peace.
