2 THE KIDDIE HAWK AIR ACADEMY AND THE LIVING LEGENDS OF AVIATION The Kiddie Hawk Air Academy is a non-profit, 501 (c) (3) organization dedicated to introducing, educating, and sparking children s interest in aviation. The Kiddie Hawk Trainers give the children a sense of flight, albeit only a few feet off the ground. Many of the Living Legends of Aviation started thinking about being a pilot or working in aviation at a young age. It is the mission of Kiddie Hawk Air Academy to give children the spark they need to help create the next generation of aviators and aviation Legends, while teaching them the importance of academic excellence to reach their aviation dreams. The Kiddie Hawk Air Academy produces the Living Legends of Aviation Awards event as a fundraiser to honor those aviators that have done remarkable things in aviation and to generate children s interest and passion for flying. The Living Legends of Aviation are a group of individuals with extraordinary accomplishments. The defining criteria used in identifying a Living Legend of Aviation are entrepreneurs, innovators, record breakers, astronauts, industry leaders, pilots that have become celebrities and celebrities who have become pilots. 3 HELICOPTERS are very useful because they can takeoff and land almost anywhere and they can stop in mid-air. HELICOPTERS can carry passengers and cargo inside and can also carry cargo hanging from a cable below. Hi I am Copter Chuck the first FAA Certified aerobatic helicopter pilot and I want to teach you about rotor flight and some of the amazing things you can do with a helicopter.

4 The front of the HELICOPTER is called the NOSE and the back of the HELICOPTER is called the TAIL just like a dog or cat. Which end of this HELICOPTER is the NOSE and which end is the TAIL?

5 Most HELICOPTERS have two ROTORS - a large ROTOR on top called the MAIN ROTOR and small ROTOR on the TAIL called the TAIL ROTOR. Each ROTOR has BLADES very large BLADES on the MAIN ROTOR and small BLADES on the TAIL ROTOR. ROTORS look like giant fans. Fans in your house move AIR to make you feel cooler on a hot day. ROTORS on a HELICOPTER also move AIR but they move a lot more AIR than a fan.

6 Find the MAIN ROTOR and the TAIL ROTOR? How many blades does the MAIN ROTOR have? How many BLADES does the TAIL ROTOR have? The BODY of the HELICOPTER is called the FUSELAGE. This is a French word that describes the shape of the BODY. The PILOT and the passengers sit in the FUSELAGE.

7 Can you find where the PILOT sits? The PILOT is like the driver of a car. He or she controls the HELICOPTER. You can be a PILOT.

8 A HELICOPTER rides on AIR just like a boat rides on water but in a different way. Boats float on top of water. HELICOPTERS fly through AIR like a fish swims through water. A HELICOPTER can go up or down, side to side, forward and backward or just stay in one place. When a HELICOPTER stays in one place in the AIR, it is called HOVERING. A HELICOPTER can also spin around in either direction. The MAIN ROTOR makes a HELICOPTER go up and down, side to side, forward and backward HOVER. Let s learn how it does that. As it turns, the MAIN ROTOR moves very fast blowing AIR down like a fan and lifts the HELICOPTER up. This is called LIFT. LIFT is what makes a HELICOPTER fly.

9 The TAIL ROTOR blows the air to one side or the other to make a HELICOPTER spin around in either direction.

10 The PILOT controls where the HELICOPTER goes with two CONTROL STICKS and with PEDALS. One CONTROL STICK on the side of the PILOT S seat: makes the HELICOPTER go up and down when the PILOT moves this CONTROL STICK up and down. This CONTROL STICK is called the COLLECTIVE. The other CONTROL STICK is in front of the PILOT and makes the HELICOPTER go forward, backward and side to side when the PILOT moves this CONTROL STICK forward, backward and side to side. This CONTROL STICK is called the CYCLIC. The PEDALS make the helicopter turn in one direction or the other by pushing the PEDAL in the direction the PILOT wants the HELICOPTER to turn. It makes the TAIL ROTOR blow air left or right. Find the COLLECTIVE, the CYCLIC and the PEDALS in this picture?

11 Now you know how a HELICOPTER flies. Match the PILOT s movement of the controls with the movement of the HELICOPTER. Pilot s movement of the controls Movement of the HELICOPTER 1. Push CYCLIC forward a. Sideways to the right 2. Pull CYCLIC backward b. Up 3. Push CYCLIC to the right c. Backward 4. Lift COLLECTIVE d. Turns left 5. Lower COLLECTIVE e. Down 6. Push Left PEDAL f.
