2 1 SVT Köln Train (1938) The SVT 137 series, also known as the legendary aerodynamic flying trains, were the first high-speed trains in the world and connected Germany s major metropolises at unprecedented speeds. The Flying Kölner s record-setting 205 kilometer-per-hour velocity helped set the stage for modern high speed rail systems that today connect numerous cities in nearly 20 countries. To reach such top speeds, Karl Maybach constructed the first fast-running 12 cylinder diesel engine and put it in a train. He also designed the train to minimize air resistance, and tested it in the Zeppelin Aircraft Company s Friedrichshafen wind tunnel. Three years ago, the dream of restoring an original flying train was first conceived as an innovative approach to telling the Maybach story. Today we are embarking on an ambitious restoration project with our Heritage Campaign to revive this iconic Maybach engineering masterpiece of speed and aerodynamics. 3 2 Collection Working with its German partners the Maybach Stiftung and Maybach Museum Freundeskreis (association), the Maybach Foundation is acquiring historically significant artifacts, documents and related objects to form the basis of an archive. The archive s purpose is to document and recognize the company s contributions to, and its place in engineering and design history. The earliest documents chronicle stories of Maybach Motorenbau workers, managers and their families that already reflect an extraordinary work culture and production achievement. Animating a century-long archival history that preserves, shares, and tells these stories is a Foundation priority. The Maybach Freundeskreis opened a preview of this growing collection with an exhibition titled In the Air, on the Water and on Land: Maybach s Genius and Company History in Friedrichshafen from September 22, 2017 to January 21, If you were unable to view the exhibition, we will soon post a brief virtual tour on our website. 4 Maybach Museum Section On September 21, 2017, a Letter of Intent was signed with Friedrichshafen s Mayor Andreas Brand and a major exhibition idea was born. Planning for a distinguished exhibition is now underway. This new area will include the Foundation s growing archival collection and a home for the renovated SVT train, a dynamic historical reference point and a starting place for many educational tours. 3 LAST YEAR S PLANNING resulted in fresh new projects 2017 was a year of incubation and growth here at the Maybach Foundation, and our team continues building the infrastructure to support four key projects: The restoration of a 1938 SVT Model Köln train renowned in its era as the fastest train in the world In collaboration with the City of Friedrichshfen, the development of a Maybach Museum section located in Friedrichshafen, Germany on the shore of Lake Constance An archival project that has already gathered over 2,000 important historical documents and objects Early planning for programs capturing Wilhelm and Karl Maybach s innovative spirit. 4 Innovation Moving forward we are implementing new ideas about how to best carry the learning of the past into the future and make it relevant to our world today. In September 2017 we tested a unique educational and problem solving teaching model on a one day train journey. The train trip focused on collaboration, planning and an application orientation reminiscent of Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach s work together. Mark Dean Photography Restoring history and engaging the future Trips always have a beginning, a starting point; a main station, if you will, where one organizes what s needed for the journey ahead. This past year we have been planning and organizing, and now we are ready to be on our way! It s an exciting time for us, and one that has been several years in the making. In subsequent years Wilhelm s son Karl installed an important and at the time innovative apprenticeship program at the Maybach Motorenbau to which the high quality and Meisterarbeit (masterworks) of its production may be attributed. At the Maybach Foundation we are committed to building and testing new and innovative ideas for the years ahead.
