8 Historian Corner from Rick Jackels You made the grade... you're a proud owner of a Harley Davidson Motorcycle. But how informed are you about Harley-Davidson background history and information? Don't get caught along the curb not knowing a few Harley facts for goodness sakes. There's actually quite a long and withstanding history behind the Harley-Davidson Motorcycle Company. It's nostalgia, it's mystique and it's ever-lasting duration has made it a symbol of excitement beyond traveling the highways and byways of American motorcycling development. The first Joseph Harley (1) came to the Province of South Carolina in the winter of 1696/1697 with his wife Mary and two children. His son, Joseph II, was born about 1685 and his daughter was born about It is not know where the first Joseph Harley came from, but it is conjectured that he was descended from the Harleys of England who have a distinguished history. We do know that on 15 March 1697, he received a warrant for 200 acres of land in Colleton County and that he died sometime before The first English settlement in the Carolinas was established on the coast near Charleston in 1670, so the Harleys were one of the early families to settle in the region. Only in 1710 did it become divided into North and South Carolina JOSEPH HARLEY II (2,1) was born 1685 in Colleton County, and died 1736 in Jacksonboro, Colleton County. He married SARAH WILLIAMSON Abt Notes for JOSEPH HARLEY II: Joseph Harley shows up in a deed abstract as having been granted 400 acres by the Lord's Proprietors on 2 March In Book K, page 392, date of 18 April 1733, a mortgage was paid off by Joseph Harley, planter, to Royall Spry as security for 2 bonds made by Harley to Benjamin Goding and John Guerrard, merchants, for payment on 410 acres. Sum was 1000 pounds. Joseph Harley was more than moderately successful in comparison to others of this period. He raised cattle and engaged in planting. His cattle brand was one of the few brands recorded during the first 65 years of the province. In his Will recorded on May 19, 1736, there were listed 136 head of cattle, 20 horses, 55 hogs, plus miscellaneous furniture and household goods. Rick - Thanks for some Harley Family history & The Fun Facts Submissions for the Newsletter are Welcomed
9 Did You Know from Rick Jackels Some Facts - Who is purchasing Harleys Over a third (37.4%) of all new Harley-Davidson motorcycles sold, were sold outside of the United States. If trends continue, Harley-Davidson could be selling more motorcycles abroad than domestically within two years. This is not because international sales are booming (international sales were only up 3% in 2010 compared to sales in 2006), but instead because domestic sales are crashing (sales in the United States were down 52% over the same time period). Harley-Davidson sold 49% fewer motorcycles in 2010 than it did in By model family those sales decreases are as follows: 36% (Sportster), 46% (Custom), & 34% is the first year since 2006 that Harley-Davidson s sales figures dropped by a single digit factor (8.9%). Sales have decreased by 11.6% (2007), 14.6% (2008), 30% (2009) over the past four years. 66% of Harley-Davidson purchasers in 2010 did not have a college degree Harley-Davidson Financial Services financed 47.9% of all new Harley-Davidson purchases in the United States for Come on Out for the Friday Nighters Friday Nighters are Closed HOG Events Open to Chapter Members and one guest per member.
