2 Director s Post Greetings fellow Chapter Members, The sun is starting to come out and the flowers and trees are in bloom. If you are like me, you are starting to get itchy fingers and humming, Get your Motor Running! The upcoming months will be filled with many riding activities within and outside the group. Many members of the club are trying to develop a fun summer with short, medium, and long rides. My hope is you will take advantage of their offerings and come to enjoy the companionship as much as I do. The chapter will be relocating the ending of the Poker Run this year to the dealership instead of the Elks. This will present some new challenges, but we are excited about some of the advantages this allows us. Please contact Sue and get signed up to participate in the event which provides much of the monies needed to run the chapter for the year. Several of your officers will be attending Primary Officer s Training in Nevada in the upcoming weeks, this affords them as well as us the opportunity to learn what is new at Harley-Davidson as well as get a chance to talk about our chapter and learn of other chapters and how they do meetings, events, etc. We will be looking forward to the reports in the May chapter meeting. In the wind.. Jane Allen, Director 2007 Poker Run Meeting Minutes We got off to a great start planning for the best Poker Run so far, Sunday, March 25, at Salem Harley. We still need more volunteers to help. Everyone who attended this meeting brought some food so we could stuff or faces as we brainstormed for this big event. Our second Poker Run planning meeting is Wednesday evening, 6:30 pm, April 25th at Salem Harley. We will have pizza delivered and we are encouraging you to bring some dessert, if you wish. With or without dessert, we still need more volunteers to help. See you all there with your appetite and your ideas. 3 Wild Hogs Late in the afternoon on March 31 a group of riders met at the Salem Harley store for a ride to the Silverton Cinema to watch the new movie Wild Hogs. We took a meandering 45 minute ride that eventually passed through Mount Angel and finally arriving in Silverton. It was quite a sight as nearly 20 black leather clad Harley riders thundered down Silverton s Main Street in formation and pulled into our reserved parking spots in front of the theater. Several Salem HOG members arrived later by four-wheeled transportation (sometimes it has to be done). We were nearly the first people to get in line for the Sunday Matinee ($4 tickets, nice). As the crowd grew there were a few looks in our direction: good-natured smiles, nervous uncertainty, and amusement. Finally, the doors opened and we all filed in and filled a couple of rows of seats after pur- chasing quantities of pop, popcorn, and candy. We made up nearly half of the theater audience. The movie was what you would expect: predictable, simple, stupid, and utterly enjoyable. Many of us were seeing the film for the second time and it was just as much fun. There will be no Oscars, but there will be many laughs. While panned by the serious critics, Wild Hogs has been one of the most popular movies of the year. On such short notice there was a surprisingly good turn out of Salem HOG members. After the movie, many went on to the Home Place for pizza and beverages. The weather started out a little cloudy, but got warmer and more sunny as the day went on. Everyone had a good time and an excellent ride.

4 Batteries The battery is the heart of your motorcycle. If the battery is not charged to at least 12.7 VDC (Volts-Direct Current) the bike will most likely not even start. Today s closed cell battery (batteries that do not vent or allow the introduction of electrolyte fluid into the cells) should last the manufacturer s warranty period. This is if, of course, the battery is well maintained. If you do not ride your bike very often, the cells will slowly discharge. Contrary to popular belief, starting your bike in the garage or the driveway and letting it run at idle will NOT charge your battery as the r.p.m.s at idle are not sufficient to drive the stator/regulator at the proper revolutions to charge the system. If the bike is going to sit for a period of time, your best course of action is to install a Battery Tender lead on your bike, plug the Tender into the lead, and of course the wall to get power, and let the Tender keep your battery charged. These units are floating chargers in that they will charge the battery, then back off the charge, allowing the battery to discharge somewhat, and then kick back in to bring the battery back to full charge. This type of charger prevents the sealed type (AGM) batteries from building up too large a charge, causing the material in the battery to start consuming itself since there is no vent port for expansion gases to relieve. Finally, it s a good idea to check your battery terminals periodically for tightness and any signs of corrosion. Remember, if you disconnect your battery for any reason, always disconnect from the positive (+) terminal first, and ALWAYS be careful not to have any sparks or open flames on or around the battery! Gases from any battery can be VERY explosive! Keep the rubber side down. Tech Tips Derek Nonnamaker is a career Harley-Davidson technician with over 18 years experience and holds a Master Technician level from HD. He is considered the go to guy on wide tire frame conversions, monster motors and, if that wasn t enough, is ranked sixth nation wide and second on the west coast as a drag racer in the All Harley Drag Racing Association in the Destroyer class. by Derek Nonnamaker

8 Safety Article Riding season is just around the corner and I would like to cover topic that I m sure you have heard before, but I believe it to be good information and worth repeating. If your bike is or close to needing a service I encourage you to have that done where ever your favorite mechanic is. When the sun comes out and the pavement dries, you want to be ready and have the peace of mind your bike is ready too. But in addition to a regular maintenance service, what should we do before each ride? Should we just hop on the bike, hit the starter and go? I would suggest not. Pilots do a walk around of their plane before each flight. And I am sure a skydiver checks his or her equipment before jumping out of a perfectly good plane. The examples could on and on. My point is we should spend a few minutes checking our bike each time we are getting ready for a ride. You have likely heard of the acronym TCLOCK. This simple little word is meant to help us remember the things we should inspect before a ride. It stands for: T=Tires and wheels (condition, check & adjust air pressure as needed) C=Controls (check that all are functioning properly) L=Lights and Switches (check that all are functioning properly) O=Oil and Fuel (proper level and condition) C=Chain and Chassis (proper adjustment of belt, signs of wear, damaged frame) K =Kickstand (not loose, it stays retracted) Now if you re like me, you might find it easy to remember the acronym TCLOCK, but then can t remember what all of the letters stand for. )I hate it when that happens.) Another option is to conduct your inspection maybe from the ground up starting with the tires, wheels and frame. While your down there, check the belt too. (No need to get up more then once you know) Then move on to the fluid levels and their condition. This includes the transmission too. As your looking around, check for leaks of any fluids too. Moving higher, (you can stand up straight now) check the switches, levers and controls. And last but not least, check the operation of all the lights. This includes the tail lights, turn signals, brake lights, and both the high and low beam of the head light. There, you re done. You can take a break now. Just to finish this article with out wasting any space on the paper, I ll throw in these last couple of things. Now that we have checked out our bike and made any needed corrections and are confident it is ready, what about our self? Are WE prepared for a ride? Do we have proper clothing packed for different weather and temperature conditions? Is a first aid and small tool kit on board? Perhaps any medications or other personal items also? So that s it. Spend a few minutes with your bike before a trip and make sure your ride is ready. I look forward to seeing all of you on the road. Ride Safe! Mark Johnston

12 Senior Road Captain s Corner Spring has sprung!! Between the rain showers we had some great riding weather the last couple of weeks of March. Now into April the weather is getting better so get your bikes serviced and ready for a great riding year. We have some great events coming up! Starting May 4th the Friday Niters are on again! If you have an idea for a Friday Niter destination or route you really like, talk to me or any other Road Captain. We can help you set it up and lead it! A service note; if you are running Rinehart True Duals, check the muffler mounting brackets at the rear. My left mounting brackets under the hard bag broke on a ride April 1st. In checking a friends mounts we found cracks in his brackets. April 28th April 28th April 29th May 5th 12 Some planned events for the next month are; Cherry Festival Teddy Bear Run & Mystery Ride, The Dalles. Ride from Salem HD will be lead by Dave Elam. DOGG s Anniversary Ride & Party. Leaving Dallas Food Mart, Dallas at 9:00 AM. Splish & Splash Poker Run, Sunset Swim Center, Portland. Oregon Blue Knights Memorial Ride. Registration at Salem HD. See the Website for more info, Board Member Duties Our illustrious leader, Jane, thought it would be a good idea to publish a description of a board member position each month. Sounds like a good idea. Then she mentioned that for this month it would be perfect to include the newsletter editor s duties. I suggested it should be the Director s position. Well, we see who pulls the weight around here. Duties for the Newsletter Editor include the following: Assists the sponsoring dealer and chapter director in upholding the Annual Charter for H.O.G. Chapters. Authors, edits, and facilitates the distribution of chapter publications, including the chapter newsletter. Presents any chapter publications (written, electronic, oral, etc.) to the sponsoring dealer for approval prior to their use. Organizes and assembles written material for the chapter. Submits chapter events to Hog Tales for pub- Bob Wiro lication. Informs chapter members of chapter activities by printing them in the chapter newsletter. Promotes H.O.G. s fun, family-oriented philosophy in all chapter publications. Sends a copy of all publications to the H.O.G. office. Another important duty is that you ride a motorcycle, and of course it should be a Harley. I ve had my 2001 Road King Classic since last May and started coming to HOG meetings in June. I ve put on about 5,000 miles since then riding at least a little each month of the year. I m planning on doing a lot more riding this year. It s been about 20 years since my last bike, a Yamaha 650. Before that, I rode a Honda 350. Both of those bikes were riden year round all over western Oregon. My first bike was a Honda 50. You know, the kind with clutchless shifting. Sweet. I got that bike to just about 50 mph once on a long straight away with a slight downhill slope. Each bike seems to get bigger; hopefully this one will do for awhile. Bob Fanshier
