The answer is YES, if the roads are clear, wind s not gusting more than 15mph, the sun is shinning, the temp is higher than 30º There has always been an issue about starting times. When the time states 8:30, about 3/4 of the participants show up at 8:00. Now, if we state the start time is 8:00, will the same participants show up at 7:30? THAT is the big question and is up to debate. Your input is important here Page "2

Chapter G Senior Director s Report MI-C rg hapte We had one ride in January so far. Howard Stob & I drove to Grand Haven, followed the shoreline to Holland to Ottawa Beach. We caught up with Jim Hake at the Holland Airport where he was flying his Gyrocopter. We had a winter party at Bob and Lori s house. It was a lot of fun and everybody (23 of us) enjoyed themselves. Thank you Bob & Lori for hosting the party! We will be having a bowling challenge day on February 13. There s got to be someone who can bowl a (100?) game. We have Wingless Weekend coming at the end of the month. A lot of us plan to be at the Bay Valley Resort in Bay City for a good time. If you haven t made reservations and still want to go, let us know. Someone said that there might be an early Spring, meaning a lot more riding time. We re ready! We have breakfast at New Beginnings and Denny's on Sunday and one Saturday each month. So read the calendar and find out when and where breakfast is. Ezra Bostic SCD Happy Ground Hog s Day, Happy Valentine s Day, Happy Presidents Day! We will soon know whether Punxsutawney Phil will see his shadow to determine if we have six more weeks winter! Well, no matter if he does or not, the calendar says six more weeks until SPRING! We have been lucky this year. We were spared the 3 or 4 feet of snow that the East Coast received. When entering our garage, I think I can hear a little whimpering from the Gold Wings that are parked there. Can you hear your bike s? Well, just tell them that it won t be long now. Six weeks isn t that long, RIGHT? Though it may seem so. But, there is always a chance that the weather will rise above 40 degrees and a couple bikes and bikers could possibly go for a ride. There is always the hope! Marilynn Bostic Page "3

Rider Education BOB UNGREY MI-G Rider Ed From DMV.ORG Tips for a Safe Ride Safe From the Start The best way to start off right and ensure you have a smooth ride, and to anticipate problems that may occur, is to prepare and pack for your trip, bringing water, extra clothing, a map of the area you re driving, or other items that might be necessary, depending on your trip. You should also be sure you have some safety basics, particularly a first-aid kit, and a charged mobile phone if possible. It is also important to make sure that your bike is well-maintained and checked, and that all fluids and major systems, including braking and lights, are in working order. You cannot predict and prevent all vehicle failures and breakdowns, but you can reduce the risk by maintaining your motorcycle. Next, you will need to make sure that you, as the driver, and any passengers are properly seated on the bike. This means sitting squarely on the center of the seat with feet on foot pegs and hands holding handlebars or the rider. Also, make sure you and passengers are always wearing protective helmets. It may not be the law in every state, but it is common sense for safety. Defensive Driving One of the most obvious things you can do to make sure your driving is safe, is to practice defensive driving. This does not mean you have to drive too slowly, but you should use extra caution at all times, and remember that other vehicles are not just other cars and trucks, they are people. Defensive driving consists of a few basic driving tips that are intended to help keep you focused on the road, raise your awareness of your surroundings, and prepare you for a fast reaction to avoid a crash. A List of Defensive and Safe Driving Skills and Practices Avoid distractions, including mobile phones and other devices, which can divert your attention, even with hands-free functionality. Aim high when looking out over the handlebars at the road. Keep your eyes moving, meaning don't just stare at the road ahead; check mirrors and other views frequently. Leave yourself an out; this means anticipating what would happen if you had to swerve or slam on the brakes. Position both hands firmly but comfortably on handlebars. Never drive while feeling drowsy or sleepy; pull over at a rest stop or other safe place to take a break and get some real rest. Continued on next page Page "4

Rider Education BOB UNGREY MI-G Rider Ed MI-C rg hapte Safe From the Start (continued) Tips for a Safe Ride Courtesy is Cool It is easy to get caught up in rushing yourself, as well as other motorists, when riding. It is important to remember that although you may be late, or another driver may have cut you off or otherwise disregarded the rules of the road, riding is no race or competition. One of the biggest causes of accidents is vehicles following each other too close. The general rule of thumb for driving is one car-length, but it never hurts to extend the buffer between you and the vehicle or vehicles in front of you, especially on a motorcycle. This can also help you maintain a smoother ride that saves fuel and wear and tear on your bike. If you are spinning out every start and constantly hitting the brakes, you are accelerating too fast and following too closely. Courteous driving also consists of allowing other motorists to merge into traffic by giving them the space to do so. Similarly, if you are merging, maintain a safe speed, but do your best to quickly accelerate to the flow of traffic. Until next month, enjoy your ride, but remember a Safe Ride is a Good Ride, especially for those who dare to ride in January. Bob Ungrey Page "5

Riding in 2016 As the riding season for 2016 approaches, the excitement of getting back on the motorcycle begins to play in our heads. Michigan has a lot to offer in terms of scenic venues and places of interest. With that said, this year we would like to solicit your suggestions for group rides. The calendar has some destinations and chapter activities. With your suggestions we are able to give each and everyone a chance to contribute. At one of our last meetings a someone came up with a ride to Frankenmuth. Someone else mentioned a Michigan Thumb ride. Both are great ideas which will be added to the calendar. Please let me know as you ponder some ideas of places we as a group can select as a destination. A restaurant, brewery, scenic lookout, loop ride, etc. All are good ideas that we welcome from our chapter members. Thanks Bob Toedebusch Road Captain me at rtoedebusch@msn.com Most of you know by now that the format and activities for the 2016 Midnight Ride have changed. This promises to be a great time with lots of festivities and awards for Chapter G. The memory of Ron Rowe and what he started is one of the purposes for this year s Motorcycles on the Mac in St. Ignace. The nice thing about this new venue is that it gives us time to really enjoy ourselves. Some have mentioned about riding up on Thursday, riding the U.P. on Friday, participating in the activities on Saturday Get out your Altas, do a Google search and find some areas you haven t been before. We re going to have a lot of fun. I have already received requests from people who want to ride up leisurely with us instead of at midnight. So, let s get planning. Time to get your motel reservations And then we have to plan our trip to Billings Montana for WingDing 2016 Help Bob plan a full calendar of rides and activities for Howard Stob MI-G ACD Page "6

Riding in 2016 Just a note to tell you we are here in Inverness, Florida. Left home on Dec 31. We have been riding some. Pretty good weather, but some rain & cold--i know you will feel sorry for us. We met Bob's (of Bob & Lori) mother at her trike shop. Steve lost a mud flap and got a new one from her. Sue visited the nice antique store next door. Then we met up with Rodney and we went on a scenic tour for a couple hours on Thurs. Jan 21. Then that night we went to the local chapter ride (of which Bob's mom is a member). She and her husband were 2015 couple of the years. We drove to Brooksville for dinner. There were about 10 bikes (most were trikes) and several cars. Met some very nice people. Haven't heard from Rodney for a few days now--i think he was moving farther south riding with a bunch from FL2-G Our family including 2 grandchildren are arriving at the airport in Tampa Jan 27; we will take them to Disney on Thurs and SeaWorld on Friday and then over to a hotel on the gulf beach at St. Pete for a few days. We left Steve's trike at the Honda shop in Crystal River for them to fix the??something about brakes--the latest recall. So we will be good to roll when we get back. Steve & Sue Ayres Did you know Amsoil Oil Filters have the best efficiency rating in the industry. Amsoil Oil Filters are 98.7 % efficiency at 15 Microns. Conventional Filters containing cellulose Media range from 40 to 80 % efficiency. A good way to save a lot of money is to do more of your own motorcycle maintenance. Your chapter has knowledgeable people who know how to change everything and are willing to help. Do you want to know more about filters, fuel additives, or other information to prolong your motorcycle s condition? I ll be at the next Gathering. Harold Taylor Page "7
