These rides could even be an over night Help us develop a very exciting riding calendar for National GWRRA Event Calendar Fine Print There has always been an issue about starting times. When the time states 8:30, about 3/4 of the participants show up at 8:00. Now, if we state the start time is 8:00, will the same participants show up at 7:30? THAT is the big question and is up to debate. Your input is important here Page!2
3 Chapter MI-G Director s News Rodney DeJonge/Dar Koza RODAR S CORNER Rodney and I went to ChF2 s anniversary party for the first time on Saturday, the 6th of October. We ended up not riding the bike because of the rainy weather and the time of night that the party ended, which was 9pm. He played the games and won a lot of tickets for Let s Make A Deal, but only won once. We had a great time though and were all quite comfortable in our PJ s. October 6th, after our Gathering, Rodney, Patty, Marc, and I decided to go on a color ride. It wasn t raining and it wasn t all that cold until we rode north a ways. It got a little cooler and the sun kept going behind the clouds. We stopped in Newaygo for coffee and then went on to Croton and Hardy Dams. The sun stayed out a little more by then. It was pretty but I m sure in another week or two the colors will really pop Rodney and I drove to ChV s Anniversary Party in Midland on the 20th. We had sun, clouds, rain, and a little bit of sleet on our way up. We won one prize from the Chinese Auction and then about 6 from the game prizes. They played another game too, which would take too long to explain, but it was fun. Our 5th Annual Harvest Party took place on the 27th. There were 18 people who came with a large variety of great food. We had a new couple that joined us, John and Cindy Boss, who became members when they went down to Wing Ding. And because they live in Jenison they were added to ChG. They were the only ones who actually rode their bike to the party. Sure hope we can get a few more rides in before the white stuff starts coming down Have a wonderful Thanksgiving everyone Page!3
4 Chapter Ride Coordinator BOB UNGREY MI-G Rider Ed A, B, C's for Winter Storage For us "Bears" that tend to hibernate in the cold months coming up, it's time to get ready to put our beloved motorcycles to sleep for the cold and snow that will be gracing Michigan shortly. You know Michigan weather, one day it's 75 and the next maybe hitting 40 for a high. Storing our "baby" properly will save us time and money when it's time for us to wake our bike up in the spring. All you "Penguins" out there, you can disregard reading this article, as you seem to like the cold, snow, chills and what ever keeps you wanting to drive your bike in the winter. Here's some of my suggestions for getting ready to store your bike. When it's still nice outside, that is sun is shining, give it a good over all wash. No body wants to go to sleep being dirty, right? Not getting the bug guts off, water spots or even that sticky tar, may cause problems with your chrome and paint finish. Better to be safe then sorry in the spring when the cover comes off. Protect that battery, we all know that these are not a cheap item to have to purchase. Store in a warm climate if possible and make sure you use a battery tender, there's a number of them out there. Be aware, cheap isn't always the best option, pay a little more for peace of mind. You may even want to crank it over once parked, maybe once a week, or if you can't be away that long, well, I'll leave it up to you. I'd say ok to remove the cover and even sit on it while cranking the motor over, if that makes you feel better. I have my mechanic do a fall P.M. on our trike, oil change, filter, battery, brakes, cables, lights and just a good going over. Repair, replace add any options that I may want added so when I get it home it's ready to be covered and rested up until spring comes around. I always top off the tank, add Sta-Bil or there are other product out there, but please use one. This will help you avoid fuel system problems while your motorcycle is taking its nap. Once you add the treatment, always take a short run around the block or to the store to get the solution completely into the fuel system before storing the bike. Don't forget the tires! Tires can lose air while setting for any period of time. A soft or flat tire will develop a permanent flat spot if left weighted in one position for an extended period of time. Use your center stand to keep the weight off your tires. For us on trikes move the unit if possible forward/ backward so it's not setting in the same position all winter. Lastly, please cover me up, this will not only keep me warm but will protect me from dust, dirt and anything mother nature blows into my bed. So in closing, "Good Night" and see you all in the spring! Bob Ungrey Page!4
5 Dennis Schulte MI Rider Ed The start of the holiday season, Has your bike been tucked away safely and securely for the winter? Are you still hoping for some summer in your fall? Ours has had its last wash and Sta-Bil added, but hasn t yet been tucked away. And we ve already reserved with GWRRA for Wing Ding and gotten our hotel room. We ve even sent away for some maps and information to leave a few days early and visit Pigeon Forge, Gatlinburg, and Deals Gap. No, we ve never rode the Tail of the Dragon but we plan on in 2019! Even if you do find some warmth out there to ride your bike, be very careful. Critters are moving everywhere, big and little. Leaves and mud are flying, and so are the ducks and geese. We ve been reading some information online that keeps us wanting to help you to help us be safer on the road. And we read some things that make us wonder, and wonder some more such as how we can reach out to the motorcycle riders who are out there without valid motorcycle licenses. In 2016, 27% of the motorcycle riders involved in fatal crashes had no valid motorcycle license. 37% were alcoholimpaired. Please be a mentor; please be someone who can be looked up to by other motorcycle riders, please be safe for all of us out there with you. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration published the 2016 Traffic Safety Facts for Motorcycles earlier this year. A lot of interesting information is contained within the pamphlet. Just a few are listed below: There were 5,286 motorcyclists killed in motor vehicle traffic crashes an increase of 5.1 percent from the 5,029 motorcyclists killed in Two-wheeled motorcycles accounted for 93 percent of all motorcycles in fatal crashes. Motorcyclists accounted for 14 percent of all traffic fatalities and 17 percent of all occupant (driver and passenger) fatalities. Of the 5,286 motorcyclists killed in traffic crashes, 94 percent (4,950) were riders and 6 percent (336) were passengers. 57 percent of the motorcycle fatalities occurred in urban areas, compared to 43 percent in rural areas. 66 percent occurred on non-intersection locations, compared to 34 percent on intersections. 59 percent occurred during daylight, compared to 36 percent in the dark, 4 percent during dusk, and 1 percent during dawn. 97 percent occurred in cloudy/clear conditions, compared to 2 percent in the rain, and 1 percent in other conditions. 91 percent occurred on non-interstate roads, compared to 9 percent on interstates Read more information at: Dennis and Felicia MI-DE Page!5
