These rides could even be an over night Help us develop a very exciting riding calendar for Wingless Weekend Feb 15, Houghton Lake, MI Michigan District Rally Aug Evart, MI WingDing 41 Aug Nashville TN There WILL be a motorcycle ride sometime this month Stay tuned for details Check our calendar Fine Print There has always been an issue about starting times. When the time states 8:30, about 3/4 of the participants show up at 8:00. Now, if we state the start time is 8:00, will the same participants show up at 7:30? THAT is the big question and is up to debate. Your input is important here Page!2
3 Chapter MI-G Director s News Rodney DeJonge/Dar Koza MI-Chapter G RODAR S CORNER Well, here we are in a brand new year, Hope everyone is ready for some great rides this year. With the mild weather we ve been having, a few members have taken advantage and haven t stopped riding their bikes The chapter picked up the tab for breakfast at our Gathering this month as an early Christmas gift. We also handed out a 50/50 ticket to everyone and had one drawing for the money we ve been collecting in our piggy bank. Ezra won $38.03 (donated it to Gilda s). Because we aren t having an auction at our Christmas party this year we asked for donations for Gilda s Club. We were able to send them a check for $250. Thank you everyone. There were 15 people at our Christmas party at Bob and Jane Ungrey s. We played a dice game where gifts were exchanged back and forth. We also played Family Feud and tried answering questions that a fifth grader would know Lots of great food as usual and fun. ChG lost another one of our members on December 13th. Jim Meredith was the chapter director from The last time Rodney and I rode with him was last year when we did the ride up through the U.P. So much fun. He will be missed by many of us. We ended up with a white Christmas this year. Sad for those who received skis, sleds, ice skates, etc for gifts. But happy for those traveling long distances to be with their families for the holiday. There were 12 of us who met for lunch at Brann s on the 29th. This was our last group outing of Looking forward to the New Year and the many rides to come. Page!3
4 Chapter Ride Coordinator BOB UNGREY MI-G Rider Ed MI-Chapter G Reflections As I sit here I'm feeling like a author that is starring at a blank piece of paper in their typewriter. Nothing is coming into that grey area we call a brain. The year 2018 is closing fast with Christmas and the New Year just around the corner. Boy, has the year flown by. We continue to be the Chapter to look at for being the most active regarding rides, meetings and special events. We continue to grow while other Chapters are barely able to keep the doors open. Thank you Rodney and Dar for all the hard work and effort you both put forth in keeping Chapter G where it is. Thanks to all the members who show up for our gatherings, meetings, breakfasts and of course our many rides we've held throughout the year. I'd still like your suggestions for rides going into We now have some "Lady Riders" who will be gathering during the week to hone their riding skills, maybe not long rides but gaining knowledge and skill while on the road. There are still a few of our members that just can't put their bikes to bed for the winter months. I must admit that so far this winter it hasn't been to bad to ride. I know they ride because they send pictures of where they went. Me, I'm in my recliner wrapped up in a blanket with the TV on. I'm a warm weather rider, or at least 60 degrees sounds pretty good to me. Let s all look forward to 2019 and keep doing what we love, ride and enjoy each others company. Have a safe and a Very Happy New Year. Bob Ungrey Chapter Ride Coordinator Page!4
5 Dennis Schulte MI Rider Ed MI-Chapter G Happy New Year! It s a great time of the year to update your safe mileage and high mileage. Please use form N.10 REP levels Data Update Form with the revised date of January 1, 2018 and mail it to us at 1498 Sand Beach Road, Bad Axe, MI If you are requesting pins/patches/rockers, please mail the price listed on the form to us in the form of a check or money order made payable to GWRRA-Michigan. Please enter the correct membership number on all forms. My RE Info in the database can always be checked even if you ve misplaced your membership card! It s also a really good time of the year to catch up on reading or web browsing. A subject that can provide some great discussions at dinners and gatherings are self-driving vehicles. Self-driving cars have turned out to be another great invention hampered by safety issues. Self-driving technology a decade ago was just an idea; now the promises of transforming the automotive industry and even the motorcycle industry have resulted in many unplanned for consequences. It was thought that robots at the wheel would ensure safer roads for all, including bikers. Robot cars hold the ability to use sensors to see motorcycles and prevent the robot driver from cutting off bikes. Yet as we have already seen in the news, fatalities have occurred with pedestrians so those sensors are not yet proven safety features. The industry believes that motorcycle sales would increase dramatically, because each motorcycle would be surrounded by an electronic safety cage. Wouldn t it be great if our motorcycles could talk to the other vehicles on the road, informing them of our speed, our direction, and our exact location. How to use that information to avoid us is still to be accomplished. BMW Motorrad is working on the technology to see the road ahead of us as motorcyclists and alert us to curves and road and weather conditions. Warnings to slow down and/or switch lanes when possible would keep us safe. Our pleasure in motorcycle riding would be multiplied by our safety. And what about a self-driving motorcycle. Where would we get any pleasure from that? BMW Motorrad has made a video of a self-driving motorcycle public. It s awesome to watch, and looks great on a test track. BMW has been working on the technology for over two years, but there are no plans to actually sell a selfdriving motorcycle. Adding automatic safety features such as emergency braking or lane switching or staying is something they are testing in their attempts to make motorcycle riding safer, thus gaining sales of their motorcycles. Just like any technology, freedom of choice is ours. Research and technology are great; what we as individuals choose to do with the information is up to the man/woman in the mirror.
