Sept 29 Sat State Officer s Meeting, place/time to be determined Sept 30 Sun Do you have suggestions for rides in Michigan that we haven t gone on in a while? These rides could even be an over night Help us develop a very exciting riding calendar for National GWRRA Event Calendar Fine Print There has always been an issue about starting times. When the time states 8:30, about 3/4 of the participants show up at 8:00. Now, if we state the start time is 8:00, will the same participants show up at 7:30? THAT is the big question and is up to debate. Your input is important here Page!2
3 Chapter MI-G Director s News Rodney DeJonge/Dar Koza RODAR S CORNER On August 4th there were 5 of us from ChG that met up with other bikers to ride in the first Midnight Motorcycle Fun Run. It was put together by father and son, Jerry and Jason Troyer from Sturgis, MI. When ChG stopped putting on the ride to the Mackinac Bridge they continued to keep doing it by themselves or with friends. They decided to put out flyers and invite others to join them because people kept telling them that they would have gone had they known about a ride. There were 4 of us from ChG that met at the J & H truck stop in Lowell at 11:30pm Friday, August 3. We left there at midnight and rode to the Flying J in Grand Ledge. This is where we met up with the people who left Sturgis at midnight as well as with others who joined us from around the area. We left there at 2:10am for the M81 Express Stop in Saginaw where we had more people waiting for us. When we left there at 4:20am the temperature, when we started, had gone from 69 to 63 degrees. By the time we made the longest part of the trip to Charlie s Country Corner in Grayling it had gone down to 57 degrees. Everyone was ready for something hot when we arrived. I counted the number of bikes here and came up with 31. I m not sure the total number of people we had. I m guessing around 40 or so. Most were riding single. We watched a beautiful sunrise come up as we got ready for the last leg of the ride to the bridge. As we were at the toll booth someone took our picture and posted it on We Ride Michigan. It happened that Rodney and I were in front with Bob T. right behind us. By the time we arrived at the St Ignace Big Boy for a buffet breakfast it is was around 8:30am. All and all it was a great ride. We met a lot of new people, there were no mishaps or accidents, and the weather was pretty decent. Those of us that went are looking forward to doing it again next year and the years to come On August 11 we had 4 bikes (6people) leave from Lowell and ride to ChS2 s Rib Fest in Dearborn (2 others from ChG met us there in their vehicle). There was plenty of great food as always It was a beautiful day for a ride. A little warm on the way home, but no rain like last year. August 18 we had 3 bikes and 7 people meet up to ride to the Mason Jewett airport for a pancake breakfast and to look at small, older planes(and a few cars)after that we went and had our picture taken at the Cell Block 7 sign in Jackson. To end the day we rode to Moo-ville in Ionia for ice cream Those of us leaving for Wing Ding had breakfast together on the 19th to plan our route. We will have 4 bikes and 6 people for sure (maybe 1 more). We will tell you all about it in next month s Newsletter being as we are leaving on the 27th and won t be back until September 2 or 3. So excited HAVE A WONDERFUL AND SAFE LABOR DAY WEEKEND Page!3
4 Chapter Ride Coordinator BOB UNGREY MI-G Rider Ed Shipshewana's Recap It was a nice sunny morning as we gathered for our journey down to Shipshewana, Indiana. We stopped first at a place called Gay's, a place to please your taste buds. Then off to the town of Shipshewana for a day of shopping at their flea market. To our surprise it was closed, in fact in a town of 658 people, not counting the horses, it was pretty quiet and most of the shops closed. Our group consisted of Ezra, Marilynn, Howard, Jim, Jane and I. So in all three motorcycles and one trike. The reason in case you're wondering why I'm even writing about this is I observed how we interacted riding in a group setting. I think about the GWRRA Road Captain Course I took at our Rally and have come to realize that this group Got an A in my book for group riding. We arrived early, fuel tank topped off, reviewed the route and stops we were going to make. Grade A Howard was our lead "Road Captain" and Jim was our Drag "Tail Gunner" Ezra and Marilynn were second followed by Jane and I. Since we took the main roads, US 131 until it ended the group coordinated very well in following the way a group ride should be. Not too much space between bikes, We kept to the right lane unless we were going to pass slower vehicles. Great communication between lead and tail gunner when it was safe to move over into the passing lane. The lead bike after passing made sure there was enough space to move back into the right lane. Great job everyone. When traveling through towns we did not always make it through the green lights. Again the lead bike and those who were able to make it, slowed down and at times pulled over in a safe space until the others could catch up. It's ok to enjoy the fellowship of our riders using the CB, but keep it under control so if there is something that the Lead/Drag bike needs to tell the group, we'll be able to hear it in a timely manner. The bikes were staggered properly, kept somewhat within the speed limits, and used the hand signals when needed. I'm proud of the way this group made the journey to Shipshewana and back with no issues, concerns or thoughts that we should have done better. We have a great Chapter and from what I see, we follow the guide lines set forth by the Gold Wing Road Riders Association. Great job every one! I feel safe and comfortable riding with any of our members. It's all what GWRRA and Chapter G stand for: Friends, Fun, Safety and Knowledge. Until next month ride safe, have fun and see new places. Remember if you have a ride you'd like to do, please let us know. Michigan has many places of interest just waiting to be discovered. Respectfully Submitted by, Bob Ungrey Chapter Ride Coordinator Page!4
5 Opinion Page Summer has peaked, Thank you again to all those who participated in Rider Courses this year. We are proud that you have chosen to practice your skills so that all of us may be safer on the road. Hopefully everyone is at Wing Ding enjoying all that it has to offer each year, including Rider Courses. Some will be taught by our very own Michigan GWRRA Rider Instructors, so don t miss out on the chance to practice your riding skills! For those of you who need an Add on Rider Course or perhaps a Sidecar Rider Course, they are available here at Wing Ding even though Michigan alone does not have enough interest yet to make it feasible to be held in this state. For anyone interested in becoming a University Instructor, please go to and click on ITCP Training. There you will find the Inquiry Form, the prep, and the videos that must be watched prior to the training program day. Rick and Joy Hebner are the University Coordinators for Michigan and can be reached for more information on the GWRRA Michigan District Team webpage. For anyone interested in becoming a Rider Course Instructor, there is a Rider Course Certification Program (RCICP) in the spring of 2019 scheduled for Roanoke, Virginia hosted by the districts of Virginia and North Carolina. There is a one day all classroom session to develop presentation skills to be held in Highpoint, NC on Saturday, March 30, 2019 for both ARC and TRC candidates. There will be a four day classroom and range, in which the instructor candidates will teach a GWRRA rider course on the 4 th day. These are 10 hour days, with the ARC Rider Course Instructor Training to be held April 24-27, 2019 in Roanoke, VA and the TRC Rider Course Instructor Training to be held May 8-11, 2019 in Roanoke, VA. Please contact us or Chuck and Melanie Geggie, TEAM GWRRA Rider Education Assistants at cwgeggie@gmail.com. Safe Riding, Dennis and Felicia MI-DE Page!5
