MI - Chapter O Lakeshore Wings Holland MI Region D March 2011 Kortman Kaleidoscope Riding Season is only days away Glenn & Becky Kortman Riding season is no longer a season away, or months away, it can be measured a few weeks. There is nothing like breaking the cabin fever with a brisk motorcycle ride in early spring. The season of spring brings so much joy for us, motorcyclists. We can get the bike ready to go as soon as the salt is safely washed off the roads by the rains of spring. April s dinner rides have been filled with volunteer leaders. Thank you to those who have already signed up for leading rides. We are still looking for a ride leader on the second Saturday, after the gathering. If you aren t comfortable leading a ride but have an idea of where to go, let us know. We enjoy going to new places and we most certainly enjoy revisiting favorite spots from the past. Tale To Tell Dick Wynsma I want to start something new. I want to challenge each of you to take a look back to your childhood days through your late teens. Think of some of the things that you did back then, or something that happened to you that would have made it on AFV. Think them through and pick one, then either write an article about it for O ur newsletter, get up at a breakfast gathering and tell us the story or just tell me and I will make a tale about it. I will get things started with a true story about me. I m not sure just how old I was when this happened, maybe around 12. Back in the day and age a 3 speed bike was the in thing to have and I had one. My wife might tell you that I had one because I was the baby of the family and spoiled rotten, but the truth is that my four older brothers had destroyed their bikes so there was not one to pass down to me. If you remember the 3 speed was the one with the skinny tires, the shifting lever and the brake handles that operated the brake calipers that stopped the bike by rubbing on the side of the rims both front and rear. WOW - What a cool ride! I was the envy of every kid in the neighborhood. On one summer day I was riding my cool 3 speed bike to a friend s house so we could hang out together and not get into any trouble. That part could have happened. As I approached the street it was necessary to slow down to look for on coming cars. I did that and then seeing that it was clear, released my brakes and proceeded to cross. That s when it happened. Remember the thing about the brake caliper that stops the bike when you squeeze the brake lever? At that very moment the bolt that held the front brake caliper fell out! The caliper was then free and got caught in the spokes on the front wheel. When the wheel had rotated as far as it could it stopped A very sudden stop! I however did 1

2 not. I went over the handle bars followed by the rear end of the bike, landing on my head with the bike on top of me. There was no such thing as bike helmets back then, which may explain a lot. I don t think that anyone saw what happened or at least no one came running to my aid. I picked myself up off the street, picked up my bike and went back home to heal and fix my cool ride. Remember that part about hanging out with my friend not getting into trouble? Now you know why it did not happen. CHAPTER O CARE CORNER Broken Leg Laurie B. Cancer Bruce H. This couple has also been known as A.K.A. Mr. & Mrs. Claus. With 10 children and 30 (at last count) grandchildren, they might be known around the family as super grand and great grandparents. The biker grandpa has owned 7 bikes since his riding days, including two Harley Davison Hogs. With a couple of knee replacements, he might be looking at a trike down the road don t count on it. His co-rider has a huge amount of angels surrounding them and their little black cocker-spaniel. Last months Who Are We?, was Bob and Jan R. Congratulations to Lori P., Jean W., and Gina W. for correctly guessing. Good luck with this months couple. 2
