3 Welcome With 2018 upon us, we at LIVINGSTONE are looking forward to the new energy that comes along with the calendar change. Our Instructor s Insight is being relaunched with the aim to entertain, inform and inspire Driving School owners and drivers. In this first issue we are focusing on Road Safety. A NPO called DRIVE MORE SAFELY has captured our attention. The passion and commitment to promote road safety by this organisation is truly inspiring and we would like to use this platform to help promote their efforts. Hopefully referring your students and clients to their website, and sharing their name and details, will help promote road safety. We look forward to adding value to the Driving School Industry and our clients. Please share any ideas or requests for information with us, this will promote some interesting content for the next issues of this publication. Dual Control Courtesy Car Now Available Keeping you operational A dual control courtesy car has become available for LIVINGSTONE clients in the Gauteng region. Our fully-comprehensive clients would have the option of using this vehicle immediately, instead of receiving a rental vehicle or claiming loss of revenue. 3

5 Driving in Heavy Rain With global warming and some exceptional weather events affecting our beautiful moderate climate, we thought that a few heavy-weather driving tips could prove helpful. The following tips may be helpful for drivers who have to face a heavy rainstorm on the road. General Tips Use the two-second rule to maintain a safe distance from the car in front. If it is raining, slow down. Take your foot off the accelerator and let your speed drop gradually. Never use the brakes suddenly. Beware of oil patches. Change to a lower gear before entering a sharp bend. Turn on your headlights. Use your low-beam headlights to see and be seen. Windshield Wiper Tip Wait a short time after the rain begins before using your windshield wipers. The blades may smear the windscreen with dirt and restrict your vision. 4

6 Drive More Safely The importance of Road Safety is a no-brainer! Yet when one looks at the shocking accident statistics in South Africa, one wonders whether we take it seriously as a nation. Alida Jones from DRIVE MORE SAFELY contacted LIVINGSTONE as part of their awareness campaign and we were immediately impressed by this NPO. With Alida s permission we are featuring her organisation in this edition and hope that this will inspire Driving Schools to continue to embrace the culture of Road Safety and actively promote it. Driving Schools initiate the whole driving experience and set the foundation for our drivers. Please review the material and contact details provided here. We trust that this will motivate and assist you in the education of our future driving community. Drive More Safely Motivated by the loss of her son in a road accident, Alida Jones started DRIVE MORE SAFELY. The horror of the scene never left her, and she dedicated her life to road safety in a bid to bring down the accident rate. The aim of this organization is to use campaigns, educational literature, motivational talks and training programs to educate and equip our road users to become safe and responsible. 5

7 Vision and Objectives DRIVE MORE SAFELY S vision is: promoting road safety towards safer roads for all citizens of South Africa through education, campaigns and responsible activism The organisation s objectives are: To provide road safety education and training through programs, campaigns, training sessions and literature To collaborate with other organisations that mainly deal with road safety and education To engage with government To advocate, on a responsible basis, for better road safety measures To be active and responsible road safety activists for better roads for all 6

9 Promoting Drive More Safely Tell people about the work DRIVE MORE SAFELY does and invite them to become road safety ambassadors and members of DRIVE MORE SAFELY. Promote Road Safety some key road safety slogans: The best drivers are aware that they must be beware Leave sooner, drive slower, live longer. Prepare and prevent, don t repair and repent. Do not use a cell phone while driving Would you consider volunteering? DRIVE MORE SAFELY are always in need of volunteers to carry out campaigns or collect data. Volunteering together as a family helps kids learn that they can make a positive difference in the lives of others and that feels downright inspiring and good. Manage a Business? Companies with an engaged employee base are the companies that tend to thrive. Of course, you need a sound business model and products that consumers demand, but that s not enough. 14 Road Safety Your Tyres Over inflation/ Under Inflation Tyre Pressure Inspecting the Tyres Over and under inflation reduces tyre to road contact and shortens tyre life. The tyre responds in the same manner to under inflation as to overloading. Over inflation negatively affects the handling characteristics of the vehicle and promotes excessive center wear. Check tyre pressure, including the spare, once a week or before undertaking a long journey. Check tyre pressure early morning. Use a reliable pressure gauge. Check tyres regularly for punctures, penetrations, cuts and bulges. Wheel alignment misaligned wheels will lead to excessive tyre wear. A worn steering mechanism, ball joints and wheel bearings will also reduce tyre life. 13
