7 Audit logistics and findings In 2006, experienced rider, on a motorbike, and engineer undertook the audits Each lane ridden separately Photos and videos of the routes Audits were conducted on weekdays between 10am and 2pm Comparison of crash data Findings included: No lane delineation, faded line marking Poor / uneven pavement Crack sealing along centre of lanes Merging lanes with insufficient warning Sunken and slippery pit lids in lanes Oil build up on road surfaces on the approach to signalised intersections

10 Audit recommendations Recommendations included: Right turn against crashes - fully controlling right turns at signalised intersections - closing median openings Pit lids position, type, maintenance cooperation with other authorities Oil cleaning protocols and resheeting Rider visibility education for riders and drivers
11 Actions Local government engineers tabled audits report with VicRoads Following the audits, project bids were developed by VicRoads for road safety improvements Safety improvement works were completed along the routes between (varied along the routes) Desktop and onsite audit review (2011) check works progress/completion Motorcycle crash statistics have been compared along the routes for pre & post implementation of the safety improvements (using data from 1 January 2006 onwards for consistent comparison of serious injury crashes, for which the definition and recording changed on 1 Jan 2006)

18 Comparison of Pre & Post implementation crash data On the 10 routes: No. years of crash data pre and post implementation varies by route, but overall 60% of the years of data account for the pre implementation period (i.e. not an equal comparison of time pre and post implementation) Overall reduction from 73 pre implementation crashes to 29 post implementation crashes Reduction in DCA 121 (right through): 15 pre implementation crashes compared to 3 post implementation crashes (fully controlled right turns at signalised intersections) Reduction in DCA 130 (rear end): 11 pre implementation crashes compared to 2 post implementation crashes (improved surface conditions and skid resistance?) No change in DCA 174 (out of control on carriageway, straight): 11 pre implementation crashes compared to 10 post implementation crashes
