Fast charging of electric vehicles This is why OppCharge is recommended
OppCharge helps cities take the first step into electric bus systems by offering an open and future proof interface for charging There are multiple charging solutions. Bus industry can not afford several parallel solutions in different cities regions countries continents. OppCharge is agreed and recommended by the industry. Using OppCharge secures interoperability between bus brands as well as charging system brands. OppCharge enables competitive tendering. OppCharge is bridging to future standards.
Bus manufacturers and charging system suppliers have agreed on the charging interfaces Front Rear X Reference position Mid line Front axle For automatic charging contacting by rails centred around reference position OppCharge is preferred. For manual charging with cable the industry has agreed on CCS/Combo2.
OppCharge is an open interface It has been agreed to make OppCharge open for all potential users in order to promote a more rapid market growth. To the best of our knowledge: No other fast charging for buses is open to all manufacturers of buses and charging equipment. Technical description and the communication protocol is open for any user. Documentation can be found at:
OppCharge is future proof The industry group is committed and will contribute to European standardization activities and to share experiences with CEN/CENELEC, SAE and ISO/IEC in order to establish a common global standard for electric bus systems. European standards are expected to come in place 2019 and international standards in The OppCharge system will be secured to enable compatibility with future updates.
OppCharge meets the technical requirements of the market Power: 150, 300 and 450 kw (600 kw under development) Ease of use easy to put the bus in the right spot and the rest is automatic. Interoperability for all buses all brands, double decker, single decker etc. Reliability proven reliability in commercial traffic. Minimum space is used on the bus roof. Enables use of standard bus solutions: climate system, driver place, bus height.
Drawing of OppCharge installation 700mm 700mm 335mm Mid line 335mm Front 700mm 700mm Position for preferred charging equipment: Centered around reference point. Reference position Front axle
OppCharge can be used for double deckers Tunnel or bridge 4500mm Clearance 4.5 m will not be possible with pantograph on double deckers. Pantograph on bus can not become standard for double deckers.
OppCharge allows easy positioning Precise positioning of contact point is far more complicated when pantograph is positioned above the rear wheels. Much larger tolerance is required to compensate since there is no sideway movement at the rear wheels.
OppCharge is compatible with other HD vehicles such as trucks (1) Pantograph does not fit on truck roof. Roof is fixed on trucks. (2) Agreed position for roof mounted charging equipment: 6225 mm from reference position (front axle). Reference position 6225 The agreed position for the roof mounted charging interface is not compatible with other vehicles, such as trucks.
The human factor has a minimum of impact on OppCharge reliability For OppCharge charging is activated by two criteria: Handbreak pulled. Directed WiFi antenna handshake is OK. For pantograph on the bus, the driver activates the pantograph manually. Human factor is a risk. Front Front axle Reference position Charger Rear 4500
OppCharge has the moving parts on the stationary pole. It is exposed to a minimum of vibrations and harshness. When the pantograph is positioned on the bus, vibration and harshness will cause reliability issues.
OppCharge vs roof mounted Investment for pantograph 1x = x = X X X X X X X X X X OppCharge One pantograph on infrastructure + Minimum investment and service cost + Minimum weight and space requirement on the bus + More space for climate system Roof mounted solution Five pantographs on the buses Cost for investment and service of ~five pantographs + Minimum weight and space on infrastructure
OppCharge interoperability has been secured both between buses and charging system suppliers Hamburg Siemens X SOLARIS Göteborg Siemens X VOLVO Göteborg ABB
Summary OppCharge Roof mounted Space Minimum space on bus Minimum space in city Weight 15 kg 70 kg 200 kg Investment cost 1 x infrastructure pantograph 5 x bus pantograph Service cost Open for all Future proof Interoperability bus industry and charging system suppliers Service on 1 x infrastructure pantograph Non-aggression agreement Committed Verified for both Service on 5 x bus pantographs Verified for one charging system supplier Compatible with: double deckers and trucks Yes No Depot charging solution Combo 2 Combo 2 Redundance Harmonisation Robust designed with proven reliability One preference signalize: industry in consensus Pantographs on each bus Multiple options signalize: confusion, wait and see
