4 Natural Gas: medium & long term perspectives Source: GVR, Oct During its September meeting, the Study Group 5.3 on Natural Gas vehicles of the International Gas Union agreed on following statement concerning the 2030 natural gas potential consumption (including biomethane) in the automotive sector : Within 2030, natural gas and other fuels for transport obtained from methane will be used to power between 100 to 200 million natural gas vehicles, equipped with clean and efficient engines (within 2020, million natural gas vehicles will be operative in the world) This would require about billion cubic meters of natural gas every year, producing significant benefits in terms of air quality, on top of the green house gases reduction. 8 Some facts about NGVs in USA Sources: American Clean Skies, GVR, U.S. Department of Energy About 280,000 Gas vehicles (160,000 LPG/ LNG and 120,000 CNG -)) on U.S. roads today. Natural gas costs, on average, one-third less than conventional gasoline at the pump. There are over 1,500 NGV fueling stations in the U.S., mainly for CNG - over half are available for public use. Roughly 22% of all new U.S. transit bus orders are for natural gas-powered models. Natural gas is sold in GGEs, or gasoline gallon equivalents. 11 Gas Vehicles in Italy a brief history Natural gas is being utilized in Italy as automotive fuel since the 30s, when the autarkic policy of the Government forced technology to find new solutions, to allow use of alternative fuels such as gasogeno and methane. After the war gas vehicles sales were greatly favored by the petroleum crisis of 1973,, but got into a deep depression in mid 80,, when Craxi Government introduced the superbollo for diesel and gas cars. In the last 10 years the trend was again reversed,, as a consequence of the abolition of superbollo (1997), but mainly of the legislation in favor of less polluting fuels (Ecoincentivi) and recently by the much reduced convenience of diesel price. continua Emilio di Camillo - march

12 Advantages of CNG for city transportation CNG fuel used in trucks and buses offers very significant advantages: Much lower gaseous emissions Much lower noise Reduced CO2 emission In the case of stoichiometric mixture combustion (Iveco choice), exhaust pollutants are well below the levels of the EEV (Enhanced Environmental Vehicle), very near the fuel cell level Emilio di Camillo - march
