1 The Inside Loop Monthly News Letter of the Fly-A-Ways R/C Club July 2012 President s Soapbox Club Contacts Put it on your calendar. Saturday, September 1 is Fly-AWays Club Day. The idea is to have a casual day of fun for members and family. We recognize that this is Labor Day weekend, but the consensus of those at last month s general meeting and a recent board meeting think this a good time for many of our members. Let s face it. There will always be dates that aren t convenient for everybody. Come on out if you can and enjoy the day. The club will provide burgers, dogs, and soft drinks. Please bring pot luck dishes to compliment. Bart P is looking into building a 55 gallon covered barbeque that should be ready by the 1st! The barbeque will be the club s newest asset and it should get many years of use. More details to be announced as we get closer to the date. President Also at the last general meeting the club voted to cancel the auction for Any auction beyond that is TBD. The steering committee recommended canceling. The major argument to cancel is the cost of renting a site for the auction with adequate floor space, parking, and facilities versus the probable return. The cost to rent a really good location like the Washington County Fairgrounds or the Hillsboro Armory ranges from $600 to $1000. It was starting to look like a lot of work for very little return. Plus, with club membership now over 100 members there s less need to have a fund raising event (notice I said less need, not no need). 2 (Continued from page 1) raising event, but maybe it won t be the auction. I know you are all as excited as I am about improvements made on the grass runway. Earlier this month the grass was thatched (flailed), and floated. I tested it with my ¼ scale N17 and am pleased to report a major improvement. At the moment it is smooth enough to accommodate aircraft with BIG wheels. Still, exercise caution. Walk it first and taxi to determine if it s ok for your model without damaging the gear. I think the west end is smoother than the east end. The next step can t happen until early fall. The plan is to aerate again, followed by top dressing (adding a layer of compost or top soil), floating to smooth everything, and adding more seed. If it works, the runway will be in significantly better shape come spring. With annual maintenance it should continue to improve every year and be useable for most models. On June 9 Fly-A-Ways hosted 7 CAP cadets and officers Richard Silver and Stephen Keyser for a morning of RC flight training. Fly -A-Ways matched the Cadet numbers with 7 training pilots and a variety of aircraft to keep the Cadets airborne. The officers also had an opportunity to get stick time. Cadets and training pilots thoroughly enjoyed the morning. Round 2 has been scheduled for Monday evening July 16! Planning has started to develop the Triangle for wet weather parking. 3 Under the direction of President Scott Enochs, your board of directors is actively working to make Fly-A- Ways the best R/C aircraft destination in the area. Recently the board of directors gathered at high noon on a Saturday to survey the site and discuss improvements. There were a number of items on the list but wet weather parking for the coming fall and winter was on the top of that list. The triangular area just outside of the gate (see areal photo), is also part of the Fly-A- Ways lease and can be cleared and developed for parking. The current plan is to clear the area of brush 25ft back from the road to see what would need to be done to develop the area for parking. If the effort is successful, the plan is to develop more and more of the triangle in phases. This will give us a No tow necessary! parking area when the usual access and parking becomes a pond and a mud trap during the wet season. 3

4 Meeting Minutes: Tues 6/19/2012 Call to order at 7:00pm. Welcome new members & visitors: 17 members & visitors in attendance. 2 visitors Aaron Brockman interested in membership, Rob Gennrich of CAP present to personally thank FAW for CAP Cadet Day. 4 new members present Pat King, Mike Logan, Ted & Sam Mercer. Great Flights and Great Crashes: Ted Atmore his giant scale King Cobra was flown by Peter Halay. Richard S lost his Phaser 50 ft vertical into the ground. Officers Report: President - Deferred to Old & New Business discussions Vice President - CAP Day very successful. Round 2 set for Monday night July 16 Treasurer - Dennis reported that we have a budget position of approx $3900! Membership stands at 101 members. Secretary - Not present. Safety Officer - Position vacant. We all have to be vigilant with the dra matic increase in activity at the field. Also a reminder to place your AMA card on the pin board all frequencies including 2.4GHz! Old Business: a) Federal tax exempt filing Dennis & Scott set meeting date to complete filing requirements b) FAW Facebook Page Up and running for those with a Facebook ac count. c) 2013 Auction - Steering committee recommended cancellation due to (Continued on page 5) 4

It was noted that the need for the auction as a fund raiser was diminished given club membership at d) Field Maintenance Chris has the trailer up on blocks. The heli-pad is installed. Wilco has agreed to install new ground anchors for the gate. Discussion started on what to do with the triangle. e) FAW Club Day Event Saturday Sept 1. Start 10am. Club sponsored picnic & pot luck. More details next month. f) Website updates Scott C and Ken G will reconstruct the Training sec tion. Scott E to request other updates and eliminate unfriendly stuff. New Business: a) Announcements: 1. CAP Night Monday 7/16, 6-9pm. Contact Scott C if you can help. 2. Events Bigger Bird at Dusters next weekend. July 22 HB Hobby Customer Appreciation picnic at OMAS. 3. Ted Atmore announced that Fern Prairie is losing their field in Au gust. Unknown if replacement field available. b) Suggestions 4.
