Up until this last couple of weeks, this winter had turned out to be pretty mild. Hopefully, everyone has been busy building or even getting in a flight or two. I've managed to do some quad and heli flying this winter due to the milder weather. President Denny Baker A few of us went to E-Fest in Champaign and watched some electric flying. There were quads and helis doing all kinds of crazy flying, along with the heavy traffic airplane flying. The AMA had a booth at E-Fest and I talked to one of the rep's there about the registration process going on. They basically confirmed everything I've learned about the process and that it will be an ongoing thing. Don t forget the swap meet this month. It's kind of fun to find something you might need or sell something you don't think you need anymore. See you at the meeting. Denny E-Fest 2016 Photo by Donna Smith #2
Vice President Wayne Hood Several members of the club attended the E- Fest event at the U of I Armory last Saturday. Several vendors were set up at the event. A lot of pilots and different types of flying of different styles was seen. Max Chapman the aerobatic pilot was in attendance. One member of our club even flew in the obstacle course using drones against team Futaba and team JR pilots. I think at the next meeting we will be discussing what events the members would like to have and don t forget the swap meet this next meeting. I would like to thank the members of the club that contributed towards getting a new flag pole, with a special thanks to Dennis Shoemaker for working on the vent turbine on the outhouse and Chris Leibel for cleaning up the field. 4 Minutes from the January 6th 2016 Meeting Welcome by President Dennis Baker. No meeting was held in December Secretary/Treasurer Jim Roach Motion to accept the December 2015 Treasurer Report as published in the January 2016 Newsletter was made by Curtis Colburn, 2 nd by Joey Jacobson. Motion carried. There were 22 club members present at the meeting. Discussions: Past President Dennis Shoemaker presented the Club s Member of the Year award to Kevin Cline. Kevin has been a strong supporter of our club through his meeting attendance, ideas for growth and helping at club events. Kevin came up with idea of a raffle to help pay for the new mower. He donated a twin engine cargo plane to be raffled off to raise money. Congratulations to Kevin. Our field suffered wind damage from a storm. The power pole located at the southeast corner of the fenced in area went down. This caused loss of power at the field, damage to the chain link fence, and damage to the power connection box on the pole. The storm also damaged one of the vents located on the bathroom and our flag pole. Wayne Hood is working with the Park District on repairs. Dennis Shoemaker and Chris Leibel will work on fixing the vent on the bathroom. The power pole and connection box will need to be replaced. Wayne estimated the cost for materials at about $500. The cost to have a certified/licensed electrician to be available during the reconnection of power to the pole and any required permits is unknown. Denny Baker has assigned Wayne Hood as our sole representative to the Park District, Donna Smith as the Events Committee Chair, Curtis Colburn as the Public Relations Chair, and Chris Leibel as the Grounds/Maintenance Chair. Denny will continue to chair the Safety Committee. Dennis Shoemaker is our Club s Newsletter Editor. Please help Dennis by submitting pictures and/or articles of interest. Old Business: The new mower is in at Midwest Equipment. Chris Leibel will schedule a time with them to deliver the mower to our field. This will allow Midwest to get the mower ready during their slow time. Sometime during the last of March, first of April, Midwest will come to the field and demonstrate, answer questions on the operation of the mower. New Business: February is the Club s Swap meeting. Events: None. Safety: None Guests / New Members: None Plane Raffle: $90 was raised through the ticket sales. Art Tattersall donated $100 to the mower fund. Thanks Art. Motion to adjourn was made by Merle Jackson and 2 nd by Tim Foster. Motion carried. #4

Dave Tebben Outstanding Member Award For 2015 the Dave Tebben Outstanding Member Award went to Kevin Cline. In addition to Kevin s much appreciated and enjoyed contributions as Candy Man and Chief Bombardier, this past year Kevin purchased, built and donated the Cline Cargo Twin for our Winter Mower Fund Raffle. This generous donation has been so popular it caused two other prizes to be donated, creating a fantastic Winter event. The award was presented at our January, 2016 meeting. Kevin also brought his just completed Bushwacker to the January meeting for us to admire. This 45 wingspan STOL design is powered by an EMAX GT2215/09 motor swinging a 10x4.7 prop. The design is available from Flite Test and it is made from Dollar Tree foam core. The balloon tires are turned from pink Styrofoam and have rubber band treads. #7
Tickets are available from Jim Roach at every Winter meeting for the Mower Fund Winter Raffle. Winning tickets will be drawn on April 16, 2016 at the last Winter meeting in the Whitehurst Clubhouse. The first ticket drawn will win this ready to fly Cline Cargo Twin donated by Robin and Kevin Cline. It is brand new made for this raffle, tested and ready to fly except for a receiver. If over 100 tickets are sold, the Club will provide a receiver. The second ticket drawn will win this 38 electric Edge 540 ARF kit donated by Wayne Hood. E-flite makes great products and this plane should be a phenomenal performer. The third ticket drawn will win this purple 54 Banshee E-3D ARF kit which comes with the electric motor. The Banchee s 3-D performance is legendary. This prize has been donated by Tim Foster. To date around 55 tickets have been sold with our goal being over 100 by April 16. If everyone buys one more ticket at each meeting, we ll reach our goal. #8

From the FAA Frequently Asked Questions regarding the UAS Certificate of Registration: How do I prove I am registered? - A certificate of registration will be available to download and will be sent to your address at the time of registration. When operating your UAS you must be able to present the certificate in either print or electronic format if asked for proof of registration. From an FAA Advisory Circular to Local Law Enforcement: The FAA will issue a unique registration number that must be placed on the UAS so that it is readily visible (this may be inside a battery compartment provided no tools are needed to open the compartment). This number will be unique to the operator if operating strictly for hobby purposes, and unique to the aircraft if operating for purposes other than hobby. The operator of the UAS must carry a Certificate of Aircraft Registration and make it available to law enforcement upon request. Operators may verify registration by carrying a paper copy or by showing an electronic registration. #11
Safety while around a running airplane motor. (...how to cut your fingers on a prop ) For starters it was December, last warm day of the year on a Friday afternoon. My son (Jerry) and I were prepping a new plane to fly with a 4 stroke. He was in front of the plane; I was behind holding it. He started the motor, was getting it to speed and I saw his T-shirt was starting to flow close to the prop. Well I started to point from behind, to let him know, also I will say if you wear glasses you should have them on, but mine were broken. (Our German Shepherd had eaten them.) I got too close and the prop got my 2 middle fingers. The second one from the little finger got a piece if bone cut out and the finger nail was missing. My middle finger got split and part of the nail was gone, so off to the E. R. They cleaned them, put in temporary stitches and I saw the orthopedic surgeon on Monday morning and that afternoon I went to surgery. They fixed them and I went home. Fingers are looking good now. It was a Big Lack of Safety. The prop was a wood 13-6, if it had been a APC prop, I would have had more damage done to my fingers or even lost them. We need to adhere to the safety rules, plus keep clothing tucked in and away from props. I am lucky though; this was the first time in 30 years of flying even with the big gas motors.
