3 Central Ohio Scale Classic Last weekend was the combined CORKS/FORKS Central Ohio Scale Classic. This was the first year for the event and to say it was a tremendous success is an understatement. This event was co-cd by CORKS Keith Bryant and our own FORKS CD Adam Grubb. We had a good showing of pilots, Adam Grubb, Joe Grubb, Tony Scott, and yours truly. Appearing for moral support were Alvin Brown, and Dick White. To say it was a HOT meet is putting it mildly, both temps and flying!! I can only say it would have been encouraging to see a better representation of FORKS members. There were pilots from, if I remember correctly 4 states and a beautiful array of aircraft. Also, what could be more encouraging than to have no mishaps and bringing everything home in one piece! Adam giving Joe moral support, or is he laughing at his flying. Joe, yours truly and a Waco. 4 Club Donations. I just got an update from Jim that we have only had 8 folks donate monies to the treasury to better enable us to sustain ourselves the remainder of the year. I hope that more of us can see thru to further support the club. Next newsletter I d like to recognize those who have made a contribution to the club. Important News Those of you who receive club update via will have already seen the following but I felt it important to publish this in the newsletter with further updates. Gentleman: Mandatory 15 MPH Limit It has come to my attention that the manager at Republic Services is very, very upset. This is as a result of people on the property exceeding the posted speed limit of 15 mph. I don t know if many are aware but they have restrictions on the amount/volume of dust that is produced with vehicle movement. These restrictions are not arbitrary but rules set down by their auditors/state regulating agencies. As I understand it, this initially came about from his people exceeding the speed limits but as I understand it some of our people were also observed speeding. Our people have also been observed speeding on our flying field so maintain 15 MPH when you enter the gate! NO EXCEPTIONS!!! Obviously someone is watching everything going on out there so beware! THIS MUST STOP if we want to continue to have a flying field!! If you know of those that do not receive update/news via please call them and relay this information. Ron K. Mandatory 15 MPH Limit I would also like to add that the site manager was on the premises last Sunday while some of our guys were there flying. Whether it was intentional or coincidental our guys were followed all the way to the gate when leaving. This should be a big wakeup call for all of us to be as cautious as possible with how we conduct ourselves. I d like all of us to be self-policing, if you see or observe anyone driving in a fast manner stop them and advise them anything above 15 mph is unacceptable. I was also requested to advise that under no circumstances any form of alcohol is prohibited on the property. Also, no camping is allowed until we feel comfortable with what is happening at the field, with the understanding camping must be approved prior to going down and setting up for the weekend. 5 Are Lipos confusing to you.. It seems the longer we get away from nitro power plants and migrate to electric powered aircraft the more statements/questions I m hearing about, voltage, capacity, C ratings, charge rates, etc., etc. I m sure you are all aware of the scare factor relative to LiPo batteries. A little better understanding of the batteries we are using may reduce some of that fear. Although there is a real possibility that a LiPo can have a catastrophic failure resulting in excessive smoke, and more importantly fire, but a better understanding of how to handle the battery will greatly reduce that possibility. If you will take a look at the battery on the left you will hopefully be able to make out the specs, which are on the face of the battery. It is a 2200 mah, 11.1 volt, and has a 30C rating. OK, so what does all that mean. The 2200 mah is the milliamp hour capacity, or the stored energy, of the battery. The 11.1 volts is the total voltage of the pack, and in this case tells me it is a 3 cell series pack, (more about that later), and the 30C is the C-rating of the pack, (also more about that later). Lets talk about terms you commonly see and should understand relative to a LiPo battery When you purchase an airplane or heli one of the specs printed in the directions is the cell number or the voltage required. One of the more commonly used LiPo packs is the 3-cell pack, which is 11.1 volts. You might ask how could it be 11.1 volts when a fully charged LiPo cell is 4.2 volts. There is what is called nominal voltage or resting voltage, which is 3.7 volts per cell, hence 3 times 3.7 is 11.1 volts. The C-rating is the max sustained discharge rate. You may have also heard the term 1-C, which in this case is 2200 mah. So a 30C rating means the battery can sustain a continuous discharge of 66 Amps mah times 30 = mah or 66 Amps. The next term we need to be concerned with is charge rate. This may be stated as max approved charge rate. In the case of the pictured LiPo the max charge rate is 5C. Meaning 5 times the C rate or 5 times 2200, or 11 amps. Personally I don t recommend high charge rates, as the life expediency of the LiPo will be greatly reduced. I always try to charge at the 1C rating, which in this case is 2.2 amps. One of the features that we can take advantage of when utilizing LiPos is the ability to gang multiple batteries to our advantage. If you need a higher voltage than one LiPo can supply, or higher mah capacity do as follows. When you connect your batteries in Series the voltage doubles while maintaining the same capacity rating (amp hours).... When connecting in Parallel you are doubling the capacity (amp hours) of the battery while the voltage is the same as one of the individual batteries. One last point I d like to make is that you should be checking your battery after each flight, not only the total voltage, but also the voltage of each cell. Use the best charger you can afford and if you want to really trash your battery just let them run down below 3.0 volts per cell. I know this has been a lot of information in a short period of prose but I hope it has provided you with a better understanding of the LiPos we are using. With the continuing battery development that is happening I expect to see even better batteries at a lower cost.
