Young Eagles coordinator: Susan Shaw! Monthly meeting: Wednesday, April 26 in the Bremerton Airport conference room. 7PM! This month's program Mark Reed, builder and owner of a Glasair Sportsman 2+2. Mark is a highly regarded designer, owner of Prism Kites in Seattle, and, since completing his Sportsman has flown to all parts of Alaska for nine consecutive summers, during which time he has amassed a wonderful collection of photographs and stories.

3 All the news! A breakthrough in negotiations on the Potential lease for the firehouse! Fred Salisbury, airport manager, has found a way to offer us a five year lease on the former firehouse building for about $70 per month. We would pay the "leasehold tax", and the utilities for keeping the lights on. The Bremerton Pilots Association and the local Civil Air Patrol squadron have expressed interest in joining in with us to pay for the monthly costs in exchange for using the facility for their meetings and activities.! President Mike Friend met with the mayor of Bremerton, Patty Lent, to brief her on the planned education center. She is extremely enthusiastic about it, and has offered to help where necessary.! Treasurer Joel Mapes has been hard at work on the new EAA 406 website. It can be found at: www. 406eaachapter.org Members have been signing up for access, so don't hesitate, do it today!! Captain Susan Shaw has graciously volunteered to be our Young Eagles coordinator. Currently a Boeing 787 captain, she will bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to the position. Thanks Susan!

4 All the news page 2! Member John Stasny has written to his Federal elected officials with hopes to try to get the ADS-B out requirement, FAR 91,225,d,2 30 nm Veil dropped. This effects many aircraft & WPA members-owners based at PWT, 8W5,S43, W16, GRF, & 7 PVT airfields. That is only for KSEA's 30 nm veil. He maintains that many others around Salt Lake City, San Francisco, and others, would be helped from this expense. Those aircraft still having the mode C installed, will still show up, just with less accuracy. He also wrote to AOPA. It is his hope that those effected will write as he has and get this unnecessary expense requirement dropped.! A recent BPA hangar party at KPWT saw many EAAers show up to sample Jim Posner's delicious palea.

5 Fun stuff from the Web Check out for a look at a future hybrid electric commuter airplane. Your EAA 406 president is on the board of advisors for Zunum, a start-up company based in Kirkland. They plan to design and build this 10 seat short range commuter airplane with two ducted fans powered by powerful electric motors. A turbine engine located in the tail works as a "range extender" when the battery packs run low. Boeing and Jet Blue airlines are interested enough to contribute funding for the development of it.

6 Feature article AERO 2017 A big German aviation show A report by Mike Friend Every year in April, there is a huge aviation gathering in southern Germany, in sight of the Swiss Alps at Friedrichshafen. With the Zeppelin floating overhead and 14 huge halls filled with light aircraft, it seems like Nirvana for an aviation enthusiast. This year, there was an entire hall devoted to electric aircraft. With 100LL gas costing around $14 dollars per gallon in Europe, there is a lot of motivation to come up with a cheaper means of propulsion. Seen below is an example, the electric powered Twister from Hangar 55 in Switzerland. This airplane can do a 20 minute aerobatic display flight and have enough juice left for an approach and landing. Two hours of charging and its ready to go do another silent aerobatic display. The pilot says that after 10 minutes flying electric, everything else seems oldfashioned.

7 Feature article page 2 AERO 2017 A big German aviation show Also new this year were several airplanes powered by the new Verner Scarlett radial engine from the Czech Republic. Available in 3, 5, or 7 cylinder versions, the radial uses off-theshelf components from Honda generators and Volkswagen flat four engines. The Sportster, shown on the right, will be available from Chip Erwin's Aeromarine in Florida as a quick build kit. With engine and a two week builder assist included, it will sell for a paltry $35,000! If you think about it, there are a lot of people who pay almost that much for a ground-bound Harley Sportster.

8 Feature article page 3 AERO 2017 A big German aviation show Nostalgia for sale was a big theme this year. Several airplanes are available new in 2017 using designs and fabrication techniques from the 1930s and earlier. Some examples shown here are the Funk & Bucker, using the Verner radial engine, a Polish-built Bucker Jungmann using a Czech supercharged inline four, and a perfect re-creation of the Junkers F13.
