1 June 2010 Chill the Champagne! It may not be time to drink the champagne, but it s certainly time to get it chilled and ready for the celebration. There are two headline news items. First, we now have a signed lease. Second, the applications for the land use permit and right-of-way are also signed and have been submitted to the county. Our lease is effective starting September 1, Pending costs associated with development of the access (right-of-way) we have an option to purchase the crop that s currently planted and start development of the site before September. However, we can t legally fly until the land use permit is issued and approved. That permit should be issued by mid-july. At the moment, our greater concern is the right-of-way. A county engineer has inspected the access and we do not meet minimum visibility requirements. We are in the process of hiring a civil engineering firm to inspect the access and make recommendations. President s Soapbox There s lots of news this month. The headline news announces our signed lease with the Coussens and the signed development and right-of-way applications that have been submitted to the county. Paul is also willing to let us in early to start development of the runways before September. Whether or not we can afford to purchase his crop to get in early is totally dependent on the costs that could be associated with development of the access. Next meeting 7:00 PM June 15, 2010 North Plains Fire Station A county engineer has already inspected the access. We need to have visibility back to the stop sign on the south side of the railroad tracks. We can t see that stop sign due to some trees and brush, so will probably have to do some clearing. We also have to have 500ft visibility to the east. The county engineer reports that we only have 435 ft. So, we now have to bring in a licensed and bonded civil engineering firm to perform a study and make recommendations. The study will cost us approximately $1,000. Keep your engines running! Scott E. AMA Development Grant Fly-A-Ways has been awarded a grant of $1, towards the development of our new flying site! Only eighteen clubs across the country were selected for grants from the AMA, and we are the only club in District XI to receive a grant! 1

2 May Meeting Minutes Meeting called to order at 7:05pm. Nineteen members attended. Scott Carrigan and Scott Enochs reported on the status of the permit applications and the lease. The development and right-of-way permits are signed by the Coussens and submitted to the county. The lease is also now signed by the Coussens. The board will determine the best method to make the lease available to the general membership. Dennis Laughlin gave the Treasurer s report. There are currently 31 paid members for Goal is 50 paid members to support the field development budget. Curt Boardman will be updating club records, membership list, and issuing member labels for AMA cards this month. Old Business: a) 2010 dues reminder; b) Flyers for FAW Lifetime Membership Raffle are posted at Tammies, RC Modeler NW, Hillsboro Hobbies, Coyote, and Hobby Town; c) Len Merritt and Ron Bacon are organizing the July 20 WWI Model Expo event to be held at the Tualatin Valley Parks and Recreation park on Rood Bridge Road in Hillsboro (just north of the Merriweather golf course). A pot luck dinner is part of the plan. For the theme WWI Model Expo, members are encouraged to bring models, publications, collectables, etc about anything associated with the great war. This event is open to the general public. It is also our July general meeting...the event is intended to be mostly social. The club will hold a brief meeting at the park. d) The shed at Harlan s has been cleaned out. Cliff N has the mower and will make needed repairs. Everything else is now in storage at Scott E s garage. The mat Win a lifetime membership in Fly-A-Ways That s right! This membership raffle is also open to the public. Information displays have been set up at local hobby stores. Winning entry will be drawn at the grand opening ceremonies of our new field this Fall. Meeting scheduled to observe flight patterns of gliders and tugs, and develop appropriate safety plans. b) various upcoming events announced. The builder has a reputation, well deserved, of building outstanding models both in appearance and performance and the Test Pilot is well qualified to make the first flight. The trials of that first and second flight point out that not only building and flying skill is required for a successful flight. Towards the end of the article where the real trouble happens and the airplane is destined for the scrapheap, something interesting comes to light. Equipment choice is a big factor in building an airplane that will fly well and safe. In this case there was failure, to some degree, in all control surface servos, causing almost uncontrollable flight. Metal geared servos stripped, other servos failed to perform under the loads encountered in flight. It is amazing that the airplane made it back to the field at all. Remember that choosing the right equipment for the job could make the difference between a great flight or an uncontrollable missile. Bits and pieces should be considered. Are the push rods heavy enough? Are the hinges stout enough? Not only is there enough torque in that servo, is it strong enough to handle the loads? Consider these things while building, and build safety into the design. Safety is a state of mind... Think and act safely. 6
