3 the AMA. President s Message Hello fellow AVTI members! On August 27 th at our field there was a demonstration of some aspects of Aeromodelling to a group of full-size aviation representatives. This group included representatives from the FAA, AOPA, EAA, APA, AUVSI and These people are a committee tasked to begin to formulate rules for the airspace use by UAV s, or Unmanned Air Vehicles. The FAA considers our models to be UAV s; they are just not commercial and are used for recreation. Many of the people there had never even seen a model plane fly let alone have an idea of what kind of airspace do we use and need. So it was important to try to show them a good cross section. We flew Parkflyer models like the T-28. Then there was a sailplane demo, a 40% IMAC model, some larger sport models such as my twin Cessna and Tim Williams Edge 540. Then a pair of turbine jets flew, myself with Tim s Flash and another gentleman with his Hot Spot. AVTI was chosen as a last ditch effort as they had been unsuccessful getting permission to fly on Edwards lakebed and the Model Masters has a 500 altitude restriction. One thing we found out during these demos is that 400 is totally inadequate for the vast majority of R/C model flying. The models had instrumentation in them to display the altitude, so we knew how high everything was going. The IMAC model easily went to 1,200 feet and the jets to 1,500 to 1,600. Hopefully this demo will be a positive influence on the committee s rules drafting. It will be a long time before anything permanent happens and there will be opportunities I m sure in the future for AMA s input. Overall things went very well and it was good to be able to have AVTI assist this process. We have received thanks from Rich Hanson of the AMA. I want to thank the club everyone for putting up with this that day and to Tim Williams for coming out so early with his models. It really helped put a positive light on the AVTI. Now for the fun business! As I write this, the sailplane event is coming up. I hope we get good attendance and the rules turn out to be fun. The Float Fly is on schedule for October 4 th at Lake Elizabeth. I always look forward to these events as I really enjoy flying off the water. The next Board meeting will be at the field at 11:00 on September 27th. See you at the field! Tony Frackowiak Vice-President s Message Terry Hemmis Joe Dagata Sorry I missed most of the meeting this month, but I had other obligations. See you next month!
