4 UL/ CSA standards for Disconnect Switches ÂÂUL98 - Enclosed and dead front switches (equivalent to CSA-C22.2 no 4) These requirements cover enclosed or dead front Switches, with or without provision for fuses, at 600V or less. These products are used as disconnecting meanswithout restrictions ; they are heavy duty products requiring 2 inches (50 mm) minimum of creepage distance, which gives a maximum safety for users and installation. The short circuit withstand of those products goes up to 200 ka. ÂÂUL489 - Molded case switches (equivalent to CSA-C22.2 no 5) This requirements cover Molded-case Circuit Breaker, Molded case switches and fused Molded-case switches, rated at 600 volts or less and 6000 amperes or less. ÂÂTypical control panel UL 98 or UL 489 Non fusible Disconnect switches Sirco M3, Sirco and Sirco V or Fusible Disconnect switches Fuserbloc UL 508 Non fusible switches Sirco M1 and M2 SIRCM 174 A FERRAZ 008 C - FUSER 709 A UL standards for Electrical Machinery ÂÂUL508 - Industrial Control Equipment (equivalent to CSA-C22.2 no 14) These requirements cover Manual, magnetic and solidstate Starters and Controllers, Overload relays, pushbuttons, selector switches, control lights These products are IEC type products, smaller requiring only a creepage distance between phases of 1/2 inch. UL508 standard requested only 5 ka or 10 ka as short circuit withstand with fuse protection. Their use as a disconnecting mean is therefore limited to local disconnection of motors. These products can only be used as a disconnect mean when they have been additionally tested suitable as motor disconnect. This additional testing ensures that the switch as a proper closing capacity on short circuit. UL508 (switches or Circuit breakers) can not be used as main disconnect of a electrical panel. (i.e. in entrance of control panels). ÂÂNFPA 79 Electrical Standard for industrial machinery The following types of machines are identified as industrial machinery: metalworking machine tools, including machines that cut or form metal, plastics machinery, wood machinery, including woodworking, laminating, and sawmill machines, assembly machines, material handling machines, including industrial robots and transfer machines, inspection and testing machines, including coordinate measuring and in-process gauging machines. A manual motor controller marked Suitable as motor disconnect shall be installed only on the load side of the branch circuit protective device (UL508A and NEC (6)). 4

5 Socomec solutions for UL508A & NPFA 79 The changes in UL508A, effective March 1, 2007 and NFPA 79 impact the design and construction of your equipment. Important modifications concern major safety issues, the disconnect means and the interlocking of the enclosure door. ÂÂThe disconnect shall be operable independent of the position of the door The disconnect must «Be operable, by qualified persons, Operable independent of the position of the door independent of the door position without the use of accessory tools or devices. NFPA 79 ; Paragraph (5) T An operating mechanism for the disconnecting means shall be operable independent of the door position without the use of accessory tools or devices. UL508A ; Paragraph c. Door close: operation with the external handle through the door. Door open: a strong optional kit with a handle directly fitted on the shaft of the switch allows the operation when the door is open. ÂÂThe disconnect means is not closable door open unless an interlock is opareted by a deliberate action The interlocking means shall fulfil the following requirement (3). Prevent closing of the disconnecting means while the enclosure door is open, unless an interlock is operated by deliberate action. NFPA 79 ; Paragraph The disconnecting means is not closable with the enclosure door open, unless an interlock is operated by deliberate action. UL508A, Paragraph Operated by a deliberate action Door open: from Off to On it is necessary to push the handle this deliberate action permit to turn and switch On. this deliberate action is necessary as in most of the case there is no padlock on the switch when somebody open the door of an enclosure. 1.Push 2.Turn From On to Off action permit to turn and switch ON. That is a major safety issue ; switching ON directly with out any other action is extremely dangerous. The use of a padlock does not comply with the request of the standard, when the door of a panel is opened there is generally no padlock and anybody can turn the switch ON. FUSER 456 A - FUSER 455 A ÂÂThe disconnect means shall be able to be locked in the open position independent of the door position The circuit disconnecting device shall be provided with Locked in the open position independent of the door position a permanent means permitting it to be locked in the off position only independent of the door position. When locked, remote as well as local closing shall be prevented. NFPA 79 Paragraph (3) An operating mechanism for the disconnecting means shall be able to be locked in the off position independent of the door position ; and when locked, closing of the disconnect is not possible. UL508A Paragraph d. Door close: the external through the door handle is padlocked* when locked closing of the disconnector is not possible.
