3 WORKS DESCRIPTION VALENCIA S METROPOLITAN AREA. Valencia and its surrounding area represent the third largest metropolitan area in Spain, with a population of over 1.5 million people. A land in constant evolution, Valencia has undergone a significant increase in mobility over the past few years, as a result of a rise in business and trade activities and greater connectivity between different towns. This mobility, and the positioning of the area right on the Mediterranean axis, has given rise to a growing need for road infrastructures. VALENCIA S RING ROADS. Valencia s ring roads are a series of roads, planned by the city s Town Hall based on the Urban Planning Programme, that make up a ring of communication around the city limits. The Northern Ring Road or Ronda Norte has been built on the urbanized area and has provided a solution for the lack of cross-town links on this side of the city. The South Ring Round or Ronda Sur has resolved the problems facing some of the highways coming from the south of the city and the creation of a ring road that properly connects the southern suburbs of the city, thereby avoiding the constant congestion at main junctions crossing the city. THE PROJECT. The Regional Ministry for Public Works (Conselleria d Infrastructures i Transports) has planned the CV-30 ring road as a north eastern distributor road of those areas closest to the city of Valencia. Currently, the section running from the connection between the V-30 and the west slip road in Quart de Poblet to the Maestro Rodrigo junction is already built and in service. This section has meant the completion of the city s ring roads on the west side and connects the Maestro Rodrigo junction with the North Ring Road of the city of Valencia, in the district of Ciudad Fallera. The project s development has been particularly complex due to it being located in an area strongly conditioned by intense adjacent land use. To which must be added the intensity of traffic on the Lliria highway, 150,000 daily vehicles and the junctions of metro and tram lines at the Empalme station. In order to give access to the suburbs of Burjassot, Benimamet and Beniferri and to commercial, industrial and residential areas, it has been necessary to define a significant number of junctions, access and exit roads on the main trunk roads. The project also adds to the Maestro Rodrigo junction, already in service, with new slip roads that substantially improve the connection of Benimamet to the city centre. A roundabout has been installed at the main access to this suburb. This avenue is linked by a two lane trunk road to Valencia s North Ring Road and the junction s capacity has been significantly increased for all through traffic. The solution chosen for the intersection with the Lliria Highway is an intersection at different levels, with direct slip roads that continuously resolve the CV-35 to city north turn-off, while improving the capacity of the highway at this point by channeling traffic diverted using two additional lanes. The raised design of all these roads has been studied in great detail, allowing the intervention to be implemented without altering the current ramp of the CV-35 at the Palacio de Congresos roundabout. The Burjassot intersection offers excellent connectivity with the CV-30 and the North Ring Road, as it has all the exit and entrance roads to Burjassot in both directions. The Lliria Highway and Maestro Rodrigo intersections are complementary in respect of their traffic with the city of Valencia. The former will be used only by traffic coming from the CV-35 Ring Road to the coast, which has enabled the installation of large capacity direct slip roads. The Maestro Rodrigo intersection will be used by all traffic to an from the Ring Road with the centre and south of the city. This will enable traffic to be diverted from the very congested Avenida de las Cortes Valencianas to the avenida de Maestro Rodrigo.

4 WORKS DESCRIPTION Of all the works included in the project, two are worth highlighting: STRUCTURES ON THE LLIRIA HIGHWAY INTERSECTION. Planned as a two-level directional intersection, this is a mixed double structure measuring 106 metres in length, with three spans of 32, 42 and 32 metres, and a mixed structure curving over 84 metres in four openings for the turning slip road on an intermediate height between the North Ring Road and the CV-35. METRO AND TRAMWAY UNDERPASS. This was carried out using a 46 metre wide, 32 m long and 6.30 metre high box jack. The box jack was built elsewhere and installed underneath the tram lines in successive stages of provisional stabilising, hydraulic jacks and back-fill covering a total distance of 33 metres.
