30 TECHNICAL INFORNATION Tensile and Elngatin Tensile tests are cnducted t determine the tensile strength/break strength and elngatin a cnductr. These prperties depend n the ally and temper as well as the size the cnductr being tested. Effect Cnductr Size Tensile strength is a material prperty that is independent gemetry and dimensins. A material's tensile strength is dependent upn the temper the sample being tested. Break strength is defined as the maximum lad the sample can sustain befre rupture. It is dependent upn the material, it's temper and the crss-sectinal area the specimen. Larger cnductrs the same material and temper will have higher break strength. Break strength is a definitive measured prperty which des nt require any calculatin. Elngatin can be affected by cnductr size and specimen gage length. Nrmally, elngatin fr a material is dependent upn it's temper, hwever, finer diameter cnductr strands with the same temper will have lwer elngatin. Decreasing the specimen length will increase the apparent elngatin. Measuring Techniques Stranding can affect the tensile and elngatin results a cnductr material. NEMA, military and ther standards recgnize that fr size AWG (0.4 mm) and smaller, the tensile test is perfrmed n the whle cnductr. Fr cnductrs larger than 0 AWG (0.6mm), strands are remved and tensile test is perfrmed n individual strands. Strain rate can affect tensile and elngatin results. Excessive tensile rates r shck lading can raise tensile strength and decrease elngatin results. ASTM recmmends a tasting rate n greater than 10 inches/ minute (50 mm/ minute) fr cpper and cpper allys (ASTM B 64) and n greater than 3 inches/ minute (75 mm/minute) fr hard temper allys (ASTM B 105). Cnductr Elngatin Tensile and elngatin are measures a material's temper are usually specified in cnductr requirements fr mst materials ther than pure cpper. Cpper, cnsidered the standard cnductr material, has been well characterized thrughut it's many years use. It's tensile characteristics are well dcumented and understd. Present specificatins (ASTM, NEMA, etc ) require nly the use elngatin as the measure cpper's temper in it's final cnductr frm.
