3 A. CODES, INSURANCE, AND SAFETY SYMBOLS The GARN WHS Wd Heating System is a direct-vented wd-burning appliance that stres heat in a nn-pressurized vessel. It is listed by ITS/Warnck Hersey Testing Labratry, Madisn, Wiscnsin accrding t ANSI/UL-391, UL-726 and CAN/USA B It is t be installed accrding t this manual, n-line technical bulletins, Federal, State and lcal cdes, and yur insurance underwriter s guidelines. The GARN unit, all related heating equipment (including pumps, piping, fan cils, ht water basebard, radiant flr heating systems, etc), and all electrical equipment (including pwer wiring, cntrls, cntrl wiring, back up electric heating, etc) must be installed by a qualified installer r licensed persnnel in strict cmpliance with all Federal, State and lcal cdes. All electrical equipment, devices and wiring installed with the GARN unit must be UL/CSA listed. The installer is t supply and install all cde required electrical ver current and discnnect devices. Lcal building and fire inspectrs are given discretin t determine if cnstructin and heating installatins are safe. They use recmmended guidelines develped by varius natinal rganizatins, such as NFPA (Natinal Fire Prtectin Assciatin). Yur insurance cmpany may als have specific guidelines cncerning the installatin f wd heating equipment. Fllw all lcal and natinal cdes. The installatin must cmply with applicable sectins f Canadian CSA Standard B365 r U.S. NFPA Standard 211. The design f the GARN Wd Heating System is unique and was develped under the fllwing patents: United States Patents #4,401,101 and #4,549,526; Canadian Patents #1,163,880 and #1,220,686. A ntice prvides a piece f infrmatin t make a prcedure easier r clearer. A cautin emphasizes where equipment damage might ccur. Persnal injury is nt likely. A warning emphasizes areas where persnal injury r death may ccur but is nt likely. Prperty r equipment damage is likely. 4 B. HOW TO USE THIS MANUAL In additin t this manual addendum, a standard GARN WHS 1000/1500/2000 Owner s Manual is supplied with the purchase f a GARN WHS 1000 (Junir). Althugh the Junir has a physically different appearance (including size, weight, and pipe cnnectins) than the GARN WHS 1500/2000, all f the infrmatin frm the standard Owner s Manual is transferable t the Junir. The GARN 1000 has a different cmbustin chamber, manway cver, sensr stem, and HWS/HWR pipe cnnectins, but it perates using the same principles f cmbustin and heat strage. This Addendum t the standard Owner s Manual discusses the differences between the smaller GARN WHS-1000 and the WHS-1500/2000. This is a shrt Addendum and shuld be reviewed befre using the standard Owner s Manual. That way yu will be familiar with the imprtant differences. C. Unpacking and Assembly: The Junir s base is screwed t wd shipping skids made frm dimensinal lumber n its base fr easier tie-dwn and mvement during shipping. Remve the wd shipping skids prir t placing the unit. If the skids are nt remved prir t filling the unit with water, the unit may be permanently damaged. REMOVE WOOD SHIPPING SKIDS PRIOR TO PLACING THE UNIT INTO FINAL POSITION ON THE FOAM BASE. Failure t remve skids will cause significant damage t the unit when filled with water. As with the WHS-1500/2000 mst items are packed inside f the cmbustin chamber, but sme items are pre-installed at the factry. DO NOT REMOVE THE FIREBRICK. It is preinstalled at the factry. 5 COMPONENTS TO UNPACK CAN VARY WITH TYPE OF INSTALLATION AND ACCESSORIES ORDERED. Cmpare the packing slip that came with yur unit t the cmpnents unpacked. FACTORY PREINSTALLED ITEMS: The fllwing items are assembled and prperly installed at the factry: Firebrick with insulatin backing Ceramic reactin chamber tube (2 sectins) with rear insulating ring Magnesium ande rd threaded int the tp f the water strage tank Lwer cleanut plates and gaskets Rear cleanut plate and gasket (vertical units nly) D. MAJOR DIFFERENCES BETWEEN WHS-1000 (Junir) AND THE 1500/2000: Cmbustin Chamber: The cmbustin chamber design is functinally the same as the 1500/2000, nly it is shaped slightly different. The side firebrick is set inside a lip s that as the wd pile burns, lgs and cmbustibles d nt hang n the edge f the brick. This feature results in imprved, better, and full cmbustin. Manway Cver: The manway cver n the Junir is a blt dwn cver with an EPDM gasket. The EPDM gasket is gd t 500 F and prtects the manway cver frm any crrsin. Tighten the blts with a scket wrench in an ppsing pattern (like lug nuts n a car wheel) s that the blts are snug enugh t prevent leakage. When the water level rises in the GARN, it will be in full cntact with the manway cver gasket. 6 Manway Gasket: WATER WILL LEAK OUT OF THE MANWAY IF THE MANWAY COVER IS NOT PROPERLY BOLTED BEFORE FILLING THE UNIT. Ensure the manway cver and gasket are prperly installed and blted befre filling the unit. The reasn that the unit will leak is because the verflw pipe is abve the gasket. The Junir is specifically designed this way, s that water treatment chemicals can cme in cntact with the tp f the tank. MANWAY COVER AND GASKET OVERFLOW PIPE NOTE: Overflw pipe is abve the manway cver gasket. Water will leak ut f the gasket if nt prperly tightened. Sensr Stem: The sensr stem n the Junir is shrter than the sensr stem n the 1500/2000. The stem is placed thrugh the handway cver int the tank. The stem s cmpressin fitting threads thrugh the EPDM gasket, metal handway cver, and int the plastic stem nut. The sensr stem cntains a flat fr the Lw Water Cutff and the Tank Temperature Sensr. 6 DECTRA CORPORATION - December 2014

7 Electric Element Flanges and Electric Element Package: The Junir cmes with 6 electric element flanges which allws an electric heating package up t 33 kw (5.5 kw per element). Warranty GARN prducts are warranted by the manufacturer t be free f defects in material and wrkmanship as fllws, with the belw-enumerated exclusins: With respect t the blwer mtr, cntrls and miscellaneus parts furnished as part f the basic unit, a ne-year warranty shall apply. With respect t the strage tank, cmbustin chamber, flue tube heat exchanger, uter dr, middle dr and blwer husing, a five-year warranty shall apply with regard t materials and wrkmanship. With respect t wear items such as gaskets, firebrick, reactin chambers, dr latch and latch pin, dr hinge and hinge pin, etc., a ne-year warranty shall apply regarding materials and wrkmanship excluding nrmal wear and tear. Prper use and peridic maintenance will extend the life f these items. N warranty with regard t either ande rds r chemicals. NO WARRANTY SHALL APPLY WITH REGARD TO EPOXY COATINGS, PAINT, CORROSION OR CORROSION INDUCED FAILURES OF ANY COMPONENT OF THE UNIT OR COMPONENTS ATTACHED TO THE UNIT. It is the sle respnsibility f the wner t install, maintain and test water treatment chemicals in rder t minimize crrsin ptential and damage. Testing f the GARN water is required nce every year. A recrd f this cmpliance is required r warranty is VOID. DECTRA shall nt be liable fr injury, lss, damage r any expense directly r indirectly arising frm the use f the prducts it ffers fr sale r frm any ther cause. This warranty des nt cver any parts replacement due t shrtage r damage in shipment, expsure t weather, imprper installatin, perating the unit under abnrmal cnditins, r ther claims nt agreed t in writing by DECTRA. Replacement parts purchased frm DECTRA are warranted fr ninety (90) days frm the date f installatin. N warranty is given in cnnectin with secnd-hand prducts and equipment, r prducts and equipment altered r rebuilt withut DECTRA s knwledge r written apprval. N warranty is given regarding the predicted r actual perfrmance f any prduct manufactured r supplied by DECTRA. THIS WARRANTY IS EXPRESSLY MADE IN LIEU OF ANY & ALL OTHER WARRANTIES, EXPRESSED OR IMPLIED. NO WARRANTY OF MERCHANTABILITY OR OF FITNESS FOR PURPOSE SHALL APPLY.
