Your life and the lives of others depend on it! General Information These instructions explain how to update the ground drive weldment, arm and wheel on a sectional YP planter. The kit improves clearance between the drive and adjacent row units. One kit updates one ground drive (a planter may have zero, one or two fertilizer ground drives). These instructions apply to an installation of: F L U D R B Kit Kit Description A NTA 907 CONTACT DR WHL UPDATE This kit is not required for planters manufactured after March This kit is for update and not for install - it does not include a pump. This kit does not update planters equipped with Hypro (diaphragm) pumps. Front Page Part Lists Ground Drive Update Pre-Assembly Preparation Tools Required MSDS a for material last applied Chemical safety equipment (see DANGER warning at right) hoist or other lifter with a capacity of at least 400 pounds source of clean water for rinsing off planter suitable tractor for raising and unfolding planter liquid PTFE pipe sealant (do not use tape) grease or paint pencil basic hand tools Prepare Planter 1. Fill the fertilizer tanks with clean water. Set the pump for high rate (see the Seed Rate manual for your planter). Apply the water through the fertilizer system until the pump is flushed. Work Location 2. Move the planter to a location with: adequate illumination a surface that will not become slippery when wet, and will not be damaged by spilled fertilizer solution clear surface beneath for recovery of any falling or dropped parts 3. Raise planter with tractor. 4. Unfold planter. 5. Install lift and transport locks. Possible Chemical Hazard: Have chemical gloves, apron, boots and goggles available. Have clean wash water available. Have the MSDS available for recently pumped material. This installation requires disconnecting pump plumbing. The pump and adjacent plumbing are typically full of fluid, which could be concentrated fertilizer. Fertilizer can be hazardous, and can cause skin irritation, burns, sickness or poisoning. Know what steps to take if adverse exposure occurs. Sharp Object Hazard: Be careful working near ground drives. Tines on the ground drive wheels are sharp. Regarding Parts This kit relies on re-use of many parts from the existing drive. Follow remove and save instructions carefully. Parts that are not re-used may be salvaged or discarded. They are not returned to Great Plains. After identifying new parts, remove and discard any tape or tags with part numbers. 3 Dismount Pump Front Page Part Lists Great Plains Manufacturing, Inc. 3 Dismount Pump Refer to Figure 2 and Figure 3 6. Relax the idlers 1 of the existing pump chain 52. Lift the chain off the pump driven sprocket 66, or remove the chain entirely. The chain is not re-used. 7. Remove the existing driven sprocket 66 and key at the pump. The sprocket and key are not re-used At pump 74 inlet/outlet, remove and save two: C CLAMP WRM DRV#28 SS( ) Possible Chemical Hazard: Wear chemical gloves, apron, boots, goggles and other equipment suitable for exposure to a dilute solution of the fertilizer last applied. If system was not flushed prior to commencing work, see DANGER advisory on page Equipment Damage Risk: Depending on time and materials pumped, the existing hose ends ( 75, 76 ) may have bonded to the port elbows at the clamps 54. It may not be possible to remove the hoses intact. Cut hoses. Do not use extreme pulling force in attempts to remove hoses from fittings. Kit includes replacement fittings. Figure 2 Existing Ground Drive Pump Be ready for fluid spill. If the hoses can be easily removed intact, pull them off fittings. If hoses are bonded, make a clean circular cut just beyond the clamp 54 locations, on a side of the clamp away from the elbow. Remove hose ends from fittings. 10. Below the pump 74, remove four sets: C NUT MAC-LOK FLG 3/8-16 GR F C WASHER FLAT 3/8 USS PLT C HHCS 3/8-16X1 1/2 GR5 These fasteners are not re-used Pinch / Crush Hazards: Use a lifter or two workers. The pump weighs 65 pounds and is likely to be slippery from spilled fluid and lubricating grease near multiple zerks Carefully remove and save the pump: C JB PISTON PUMP NGP 6055-K 12. Unless these fittings are in excellent condition, note their current orientations, then remove the inlet and outlet fittings: C EL 1MNPT X 1HB POLYPROP C EL 1 1/2MNPT X 1 1/2HB POLYP C AD 1 1/2MNPT X 1FNPT POLYPROP The kit includes replacement identical new fittings. Refer to Figure Remove and save one each: C PIN LINCH 3/16 X 1 9/16 LONG C SPKT 40C15 X 7/8 HEX BORE 14. On the planter tool bar, use a grease or paint pencil to mark the location of the two U-bolts Support the weight of the existing ground drive system, which may be as high as 400 pounds. 16. Remove and save four sets: C NUT HEX 3/4-10 PLT C WASHER LOCK SPRING 3/4 PLT C WASHER FLAT 3/4 SAE PLT and two: C U-BOLT 3/4-10 CORNER 7 SQ 17. Lift the existing ground drive clear of the planter. Lay it on its right side. Additional parts are removed from the left side. Refer to Figure Remove and save one: C KNOB 3/8-16 MALE THD 2 3/8OD 19. Remove the chain guard: H FERT PUMP UPR CHAIN GUARD WLMT It is not re-used. The kit includes a new guard. 20. Remove and save one each: C PIN LINCH 3/16 X 1 9/16 LONG C SPKT 40C47 X 7/8 HEX BORE 21. Disassemble the upper idlers, saving only two: C IDLER 1 PC 2.38X1.01X1.062 The fasteners, spacers, washers and nuts are not re-used. 22. Remove two cotter pins at the spring rod: C PIN COTTER 5/32 X 1 1/4 LG These are not re-used. The kit includes new pins. 23. Remove and save one each: C PIN CLEVIS 1/2 X 4 PLATED C PIN CLEVIS 1/2 X 1 3/ S OPENER SPRING ROD ASSY. SHRT. 5 Transfer Saved Parts Front Page Part Lists Great Plains Manufacturing, Inc. 5 Transfer Saved Parts Install Upper Idlers Refer to Figure Select two saved: C IDLER 1 PC 2.38X1.01X1.062 two sets new: C HHCS 1/2-13X3 GR D IDLER PIVOT TB 1ODX.56IDX1.84L C WASHER LOCK SPRING 1/2 PLT C NUT HEX 1/2-13 PLT and three new: C WASHER FLAT 1/2 USS HARD PLT Place a flat washer 25 on each bolt 20. Add a saved idler 70 and a pivot tube From the left side of the mount weldment, insert one of the bolt assemblies through the single hole 1 inside the arc of the slot. Secure to Grade 5 torque specification with a lock washer 24 and nut 21. Do not use a second flat washer on this bolt assembly. 26. From the left side of the mount weldment, insert the other bolt assembly through the slot 2. Add a flat washer 25, lock washer 24 and nut 21, finger-tight. Slack is adjusted after installing the chain at step 40. Install Sprockets 27. Select one each saved: C SPKT 40C15 X 7/8 HEX BORE C SPKT 40C47 X 7/8 HEX BORE Place one on the storage post 3 and the other on the pivot shaft 4. Select which goes where by where they were previously installed. This update does not change fertilizer rate. The previous Range setup is likely to be the correct for the next use of this planter. 28. Select two saved: C PIN LINCH 3/16 X 1 9/16 LONG Secure the sprockets at tree and shaft. Install Spring Refer to Figure Select one each saved: C PIN CLEVIS 1/2 X 4 PLATED C PIN CLEVIS 1/2 X 1 3/ S OPENER SPRING ROD ASSY. SHRT. Use the shorter pin 62 to connect the clevis end of the spring to the lower (arm) lug 6. Use the longer pin 63 to connect the base end of the spring to the upper lugs Select two new: C PIN COTTER 5/32 X 1 1/4 LG Secure both clevis pins. Front Page Part Lists Ground Drive Update Install New Drive Install Mount Refer to Figure Select two saved: C U-BOLT 3/4-10 CORNER 7 SQ and four sets saved: C NUT HEX 3/4-10 PLT C WASHER LOCK SPRING 3/4 PLT C WASHER FLAT 3/4 SAE PLT Hoist the drive mount 14 into alignment with the marks made at step 14. Insert the U-bolts 65 from above front. Add the flat washers 60, lock washers 59 and nuts 56. Secure to finger tight. 33. Adjust alignment of mount to match marks. Tighten nuts to Grade 5 torque specification in an alternating sequence, to ensure U-bolts are evenly seated and drive is straight front-to-back. Install Pump Null Figure 8 Install Drive Install Inlet Elbow Refer to Figure Select one new: C EL 1 1/2MNPT X 1 1/2HB POLYP Clean any previous sealant or other debris from the lower (inlet) port 1 of the pump 74. Apply liquid PTFE pipe sealant to the threads of the elbow. Screw the elbow into the pump port. Match the orientation of the inlet elbow removed at step 12. Mount Pump 35. Place the pump 74 on the top platform of the mount 14, with the inlet and outlet ports to planter rear. 36. Select four sets new: C HHCS 3/8-16X1 1/2 GR C WASHER FLAT 3/8 USS PLT C NUT MAC-LOK FLG 3/8-16 GR F Insert the bolts 19 through the pump base from above. Add a flat washer 23 and the lock nuts 22. Tighten to Grade 5 torque specification. Install Driven Sprocket F L 1 U D 29 R B Select one new: H SPKT 40C15 1 ID X 1.13 KW/2SS which includes one: D KEY 1/4 X 1 and two: C SCR SET SKT KCP 5/16-18X5/16NY Place the key 11 in the pump drive shaft keyway. Thread the elbow into the adaptor 30, finger-tight Clean any previous sealant or other debris from the upper (outlet) port 2 of the pump 74. Apply liquid PTFE pipe sealant to the threads of the adaptor 30. Screw the adaptor into the pump port. Match the orientation of the elbow removed at step 12. Route Pump Chain Refer to Figure Select one new: D CHAIN RL # PITCHES 41. Consult Chain Setup on page 8 for chain clip orientation. Route chain 13 around driving sprocket 3, through idlers 70 and around pump driven sprocket Adjust idlers 70 for 1 2 in slack in forward chain span. Check Arm Chain Slack 43. Adjust idlers 27 for 3 4 in slack on lower span 5 of arm chain 12. N ll Figure 10 Install Outlet Fittings Connect Hoses (not shown) 44. Select two saved: C CLAMP WRM DRV#28 SS( ) Place a clamp on each pump hose disconnected at step Slide the hoses fully on to the new fittings ( 28, 30 ). Secure with clamps 54. Fill the pump with clean water or RV antifreeze. This completes the installation. Appendix Chain Setup Set chain clip orientation when mounting chains and check it before adjusting slack on factory-installed chains. Set or check initial slack on all chains prior to delivery. Chain Clip Orientation Refer to Figure 13 (arrow shows chain direction) Whenever mounting a chain, make sure the clip at the removable link is oriented to minimize snags. Install clip with open end facing away from direction of chain travel (shown by gray or striped arrows in chain routing diagrams)..eps 60% Figure 13 Chain Clip Orientation Chain Slack Refer to Figure 14, which, for clarity, greatly exaggerates slack, and omits the idlers. 1. Measure the span 1 for allowable slack: Locate the longest span of each chain (usually the span which does not run through the idlers). 2. Determine the ideal slack: Long chains (over 91cm/36in): 2.1cm/m ( 1 4 in per ft) Vertical short chains: 2.1cm/m ( 1 4 in per foot) Horizontal short chains: 4.2cm/m ( 1 2 in per foot) Measure the current slack 2 : Acting at a right angle to the chain span at the center of the span, deflect the chain in both directions.
