1 Part Lists Great Plains Manufacturing, Inc. 1 Installation Instructions Loup Shaft Monitor Used with Drill models: Compatible with most 1995 and later, two- and three-box drills with 5 8 -inch square main seed box meter drive shafts. Have your dealer contact the factory if there is any question. Compatible with many pre-1995 drills with 5 8 -inch square main seed box meter drive shafts. Have your dealer contact the factory if there is any question. General Information Note: These kits are also compatible with current single-box drills. Only one sensor would be used. The system ignores disconnected channels. Refer to Figure 1 These instructions explain how to install a Loup Shaft Monitor. The kit adds a rotation sensor 26 to the main seed box meter drive shaft of each drill box, and a monitor console 25 in the tractor. In operation, when the main seed box shaft of any drill box stops rotating for more than 20 seconds, an alarm sounds in the tractor cab. One kit updates one entire drill: Kits Kit Description A LOUP 2 CHANNEL SHAFT MONITOR A LOUP 3 CHANNEL SHAFT MONITOR Tools Required: calibration crank and/or instructions for performing a calibration on this model drill, basic hand tools, including drill and tap wrench, 3 16 inch (#12, 4.8 mm) drill bit, 3 16 inch drift punch, tap, and #7 drill bit (or 5.1 mm), three 1 4 inch (6.3 mm) fasteners for installing the console in the tractor cab, and a knife or saw capable of cutting hard rubber (may not be required for larger row spacings). Compatibility Check Refer to Figure 1 At one drill box, inspect the shaft passing through the main seed box feeder cups. Verify that it is square (not hexagonal) and is inches on a side (15.9 mm). The kit is compatible with bare shafts 1, or shafts inside round plastic spacer tubes 51 between meters. It is compatible with large C (1 3 4 inch flute width) and small C (1 1 4 inch) feeder cups Figure 1 3 Channel Console and Sensor Notations and Conventions Call-Outs 1 to 9 Single-digit callouts identify components in the currently referenced Figure. 2 2 Great Plains Manufacturing, Inc. Front Page Part Lists LOUP 2/3 CHANNEL SHAFT MONITOR Identify Meter Type 1. Determine whether the drill has large or small feeder cups. Large cups, used on most drills still in production, have a inch flute width, and an approximate external width of 2 inches at the side walls. Small cups, used on older drill designs have a inch flute width, and an approximate external width of inches at the side walls. Prepare the Drill 2. Move the drill to a location with adequate lighting, and a clear surface beneath for recovery of any falling parts. 3. If a folding model, unfold the drill. Consult the Operator manual for details and safety considerations. 4. Raise the drill or otherwise configure it so that the meter drive shaft may be rotated while the drill is stationary. 5. Install all locks or supports necessary to support the drill while it is being worked on. 6. Shut off any tractor used to position the drill. Refer to Figure 3 7. Set the seed rate handles 2, for all main seed boxes, to 50 on the 0-to-100 scales. On each main seed box, use the magnet to identify locations between cups with the following attributes: close to drill center, on wing boxes, cups closest to the center box section. not obstructed to the front by a seed rate handle, and adequate exposed surface on the drive shaft to place the magnet - or adequate length of polymer tube to provide cuts for magnet mounting. 9. Tag each location with a short length of tape on the seed box. Notes: Gaps with lock collars generally provide exposed shaft. Tube mounting requires that the tube be at least as long as the magnet for surface mounting, and at least inches longer than the magnet for cut-away mounting (see Alternate Mounting Methods on page 4). Smaller row spacings may require reducing magnet length, to not less than inch M Front Page Part Lists

Shaft Face Install If the location has a polymer tube over the shaft, continue at Tube Install on page De-grease and dry the shaft Using the calibration crank or other means to rotate the shaft so that two faces are at vertical, and two are horizontal. Refer to Figure Select one new: MAGNET, ADHESIVE BACKED, LARGE 13. Before removing the release backing, check that the magnet 29 fits. If it does not fit, trim it as required, keeping it longer than the minimum length specified in the Notes: on page Remove the release backing film. Aligning with the shaft center-line (and to the extent possible, in the center of the cup-to-cup gap), apply the adhesive side of the magnet to the shaft Figure 4 Magnet on Shaft Refer to Figure Select two new: CABLE TIE (These are the smaller ties) Loosely install the ties 31 at each end of the magnet, so that when finally tightened, the ratchet end of the tie will be on the shaft face opposite the magnet 29. a Position the ties so that the ends of the magnet are exposed by at least dimension: a 1 4 inch (6 mm). Front Page Part Lists LOUP 2/3 CHANNEL SHAFT MONITOR Tube Install If the magnet location has a bare shaft, continue at Shaft Face Install on page Tube install requires that tube rotation be coupled to shaft rotation (it is normally free to spin). There are several ways to accomplished this. The method enumerated below may be easier. 17. Degrease and dry the spacer tube 51. Refer to Figure Select one new: MAGNET, ADHESIVE BACKED, LARGE 19. Before removing the release backing, check that the magnet 29 fits. If it does not fit, trim it as required, keeping it longer than the minimum length specified in the Notes: on page Aligning with the shaft center-line (and to the extent possible, in the center of the cup-to-cup gap), outline the magnet position with a marker. Add a vertical mark that is approximately 3 8 inch inside each end of the outline. 21. Brace your arm against the seed box, and rotate the tube while holding the marker at the vertical marks. 22. On the side of the tube opposite the magnet position, make vertical cuts 4 on the scribed lines Figure 6 Magnet on Tube Make the cuts 4 wide enough for the ratchet ends of the ties 31, and approximately 1 4 of the tube circumference. Be careful to not cut the shaft. Clean away any cutting debris. 23. Remove the backing release film from the magnet 29. Apply the adhesive side of the magnet to the outlined area. 24. Select two new: CABLE TIE (These are the smaller ties) Install the ties 31 at each end of the magnet, so that when finally tightened, the ratchet end of the tie will be on the shaft face opposite the magnet 29. Tighten the ties so that they lay flat against a shaft face in the cuts 4. This prevents independent tube rotation. 25. Continue with the next magnet location at Install Magnets on page 3, or if all magnets are installed, at Drill Mounting Holes on page 6. Alternate Mounting Methods Cut-away Mounting: You may also cut or grind a slot in the tube, and mount the magnet directly on the shaft face, as in the Shaft Face Install method. Be sure to use the cable ties to secure the magnet (ties may be tied around the tube, with or without cuts). Direct Mounting: Cut out plastic spacer tube and install a split lock collar 32 (item A, at right) on each side of the shaft next to the cups. Attach magnet to bare shaft and secure with cable ties. 5 Install Magnets Front Page Part Lists Great Plains Manufacturing, Inc. 5 Special Mounting Instructions for 3S-5000 Drills with 6 Spacing (Optional for and 10 Row Spacings) Left- and Right-Side Seed Boxes 1. Loosen and remove the existing lock collar 58 from either the left- or right-side box shaft closest to the center box. The lock collar and set screws will not be re-used. 2. Select one new each: MAGNET, ADHESIVE BACKED, LARGE D LOCK COLLAR 58 Before removing the release backing, check that the magnet fits in the milled slot on the lock collar 14. Trim the magnet to fit the slot as needed. 3. Remove the release backing and position the magnet in the milled slot on the lock collar 14. Press firmly along the length of the magnet to allow greatest contact between collar and magnet. 4. Select two new each: CABLE TIE C SCREW, SET 5/16-18 SKT KP X 3/8 5. Wrap cable ties around the lock collar and over each end of the magnet. Position the ties so that the ends of the magnet are exposed by about 1/4 inch (6 mm). Position the ratchet end of each tie opposite the magnet. Tighten the ties. 6. Install the new lock collar in place of the one removed in step 1. Install and tighten the set screws 17 firmly. Center Seed Box 7. Locate the shaft coupling 52 at the center box. Use a drift punch to remove the roll pins and slide the coupler over and onto the left shaft. Save the roll pins. 8. Repeat steps 1 through 6 above to install the new lock collar and magnet on the right-hand shaft of the center box. 9. Slide the shaft coupling 52 back into position to secure both shafts and re-insert the roll pins. Note: Slotted lock collar 14 (item B, page 4) may also be installed at the inside or outside end of a box if there is enough available box space to mount the bracket and sensor. To install mounts and sensors, see Drill Mounting Holes on page 6, and Install Mounts & Sensors on page 7. Center-punch the positions. 12. Drill 3 16 inch (#12, 4.8 mm) holes into the seed box wall at each marked position. 13. Depending on feeder cup size, select three of: D SHAFT SENSOR MOUNT ( Large ) D SMALL CUP SENSOR MOUNT ( Small ) 15. Select three new: C SCR SELF TAP #10 X 3/4 With the slotted-hole break of the mount ( 12 or 13 ) down and to the rear, and the short break of the mount up and to the front, secure the mount to the seed box wall with the self-tapping screws Note: Do not over-tighten the screws. 16. Repeat step 15 for each sensor position Install Sensors Select one new: LOUP SHAFT SENSOR 2&3 CHANNEL If two plastic nuts 30 are pre-installed, remove and save one. The sensor may include a bracket not used in this installation. Remove it. 18. If no plastic nuts 30 are pre-installed on the sensor 26, select two new: NUT HEX JAM, PLASTIC M16 X 2 Thread one jam nut onto 30 the sensor Insert the flat faced end of the sensor 26 through the slotted hole in the mount ( 12 or 13 ). Thread the second jam nut 30 onto the sensor. 20. Check that the drive shaft is rotated so that the magnet 29 face is parallel to the sensor face. 21. Adjust the jam nuts so that the gap 8 between the sensor face and the magnet face is: 1 8 inch (3.2 mm) Note: If the gap is too small, the edge of the magnet, or the cable ties, may strike the sensor as the shaft rotates. If the gap is too large, the sensor may fail to detect shaft rotation. 22. Rotate the shaft to verify clearance. Set the seed rate handle to 0 and check clearance again. Set the seed rate handle to 100 and check clearance. 23. Tighten the jam nuts. Do not over-tighten. 24. Repeat step 17 through step 23 for each sensor position. Front Page Part Lists LOUP 2/3 CHANNEL SHAFT MONITOR Install Harness General Harness Guidelines Left and Right are facing forward in the direction of drill field motion. Before installing cable ties and clips, uncoil and dress the cable assemblies across the drill and to the hitch. This assures that the cables are long enough, and correctly oriented left/right. Keep cables clear of moving parts and pinch points, such as chains, sprockets and rotating shafts. Keep cables clear of sharp edges (or protect edges). Keep cables clear of any machine parts that get hot. Allow slack at hinge points, or route the cable so that it passes through the hinge axis. Take advantage of holes and open tubes on the drill. However, avoid routing through a tube if a mated connector set would end up inside the tube. Evaluate routing and attachment points. Ample ties and clamps are provided for most situations. The clips can also be used around hydraulic hoses, and the cables secured to the clips with ties. Leave a little slack between attachment points. A cable stretched taut could be damage by normal temperature swings. Where there is an extended run of unsupported cable, make sure each end of the sag is supported by a cable tie, and not by a connector, and that there are no connections in the sag. Where excess cable exists (such as on two-point drills), plan a location for coiling it up and securing it. Having the coil near the hitch provides flexibility if any later troubleshooting is required. If an accessory hitch is used (such as a Great Plains CPH, PFH or SSH), but is not permanently connected, locate the extension-to-harness connection at the drill 3-point hitch M Front Page Part Lists

Refer to Figure Select one new: HARNESS 2 SHAFT MONITOR LOUP Dress the harness across the drill, making sure that the leads labelled LEFT and RIGHT are routed to their respective seed boxes. 26. Select one new: C SHAFT MONITOR EXT. 25 4P WP Note: On a two-point drill, this extension cable may not be needed. If so, continue at step Dress the extension cable 23 along the tongue, or through any accessory hitch. Make sure that the connector that mates with the 2-way harness 23 is toward the rear. Verify that the forward end of the extension cable reaches the hitch. 28. Route the 2-way leads through available holes and near attachment points for cable ties. 29. Connect each 2-way lead to its respective shaft sensor lead Connect the extension cable 23 to the 2-way harness Select all of new (not shown): C HOSE CLIP 5/8 I.D. 32. These clips are used to secure the sensor leads to the flange that joins each seed box to its tray. Allocate them for equal clip spacing on each box. Refer to Figure At each desired support point, remove the existing: C HFSS 1/4-20X5/8 GR C NUT HEX LOCK 1/4-20 FLG Save the nut Select all of new: C HFSS 1/4-20X3/4 GR5 Insert the sensor lead in the clip 15. Secure the clip to the flange with the new screw 19, and the saved nut Select all of new (not shown): C CABLE TIE.19X D 50LB 36. 11 Install Monitor Console Front Page Part Lists Great Plains Manufacturing, Inc. 11 Install Monitor Console Refer to Figure Select one of new: LOUP 2 CHANNEL SHAFT MONITOR LOUP 3 CHANNEL SHAFT MONITOR Ground +12VDC Determine a suitable location for the console in the tractor cab. If the cab tends to be quiet in field operations, the console only needs to be within reach, as the alarm tone suffices when the indicator lamps are not in view. 2 3 Avoid placing the console where it interferes with the view of public roads or blocks the view of important components of towed implements The location needs to be suitable for attaching the included mount 1. The necessary 1 4 inch fasteners are not provided in the kits, as requirements vary considerably. You may even want to attach the mount to any existing mount. Figure 17 Console Leads The mount 1 may be removed and used as a drill template. 50. Route the power leads 2 to a 12VDC source. Red is positive. Black is ground. The console includes its own power switch, and does not need to be connected to a switched 12VDC source. 51. Make a note in the Hitching section of your Operator manual. Add Shaft Monitor to the checklist of electrical connections to be made. 52. Route the harness lead 3 out of the cab, to the hitch. When the drill is hitched, connect the console harness lead to the extension cable ( 22 or 23 ) on the drill Front Page Part Lists M

Front Page Part Lists LOUP 2/3 CHANNEL SHAFT MONITOR Operation Refer to Figure 18 (your console may differ in arrangement and cosmetic details - function is as described below) Console Panel Elements Power Switch: This mechanical switch controls 12VDC power to the shaft monitor system. Power Indicator: This LED illuminates when 12VDC is available and the switch 1 is ON. Status Indicators: With the system active, one or more of these LEDs illuminate whenever shaft rotation has not been detected for 20 seconds. Audio Portal: When Status Indicators first illuminate, an audible tone is emitted at this portal, for 20 seconds. 2 1 Figure 18 Console Features Normal Operation 1. Connect the shaft monitor and console harness leads when hitching. 2. Set the power switch 1 to ON. The power indicator 2 illuminates. If the drill is not in motion with shafts rotating: The status indicators 3 illuminate. The alarm tone 4 sounds for 20 seconds. 3. The power switch is normally left on for planting. If your turns take more than 20 seconds, an alarm sounds. Turn the switch off to avoid nuisance alarms. If a shaft stall occurs during planting, an alarm sounds, and the status indicator for that channel illuminates, identifying the stopped shaft. Note: If the harness, or one of more sensor leads, are not connected, the system ignores the disconnected channels, and does NOT generate an alarm at power-on. Note: An alarm at power up is normal. It is also a verification that the sensors are detected. Note: If an actual shaft stall alarm occurs, be aware that the affected seed box has not been planting for 20 seconds M Front Page Part Lists
