Refer to this manual for additional information. Work in a clean, dry area. Make sure all moving parts have stopped and all system pressure is relieved. Inspect all parts. Make sure parts are in good condition and installed properly. Remove buildup of grease, oil or debris. Remove all tools and unused parts from implement before operation. OFF Prepare for Emergencies Be prepared if a fire starts. Keep a first aid kit and fire extinguisher handy. Keep emergency numbers for doctor, ambulance, hospital and fire department near phone. 911 Safety At All Times Thoroughly read and understand the instructions in this manual before operation. Read all instructions noted on the safety decals. Be familiar with all implement functions. Operate machinery from the driver s seat only. 5 Great Plains Manufacturing, Inc. Introduction 3 Introduction Description of Unit These kits add small seeds planting capability to many Great Plains 7-foot and 10-foot end-wheel drills. These kits also replace an older kit (before July 1991), and may be used to upgrade drills with the previous small seeds components. The kit drive is independent of main seed rate, and unaffected by changes to main seed box Drive Type. R F U D B L Compatible Drills Before ordering or installing a kit, check the serial number plate on the drill against both of the following tables. The drill product number prefix must be one in the first table (at right). The specific kit required (from the second table) depends on drill width, row spacing, and whether fertilizer or Native Grass is also installed. Installation Instructions 5 Installation Instructions Before You Start Most accidents are the result of negligence and carelessness, usually caused by failure of the operator to follow simple but necessary safety precautions. Allow no one to install the small seeds attachment before carefully reading this manual. Due to evolving manufacturing practices, some subassemblies may already be completely pre-assembled. If so, check that fasteners are tight, and skip the unneeded assembly steps. Tools Required Basic hand tools, including hose clamp pliers Updated Parts Manual for the drill Drill and common fractional bit sizes, including 3 8 in Silicone sealant, weatherproof tape, or short fasteners for plugging box holes. Scaffold or ladder Two people for attaching seed box (3 preferred) Torque values for fasteners are shown on page Ensure drill is compatible with kit. See page Read and understand Important Safety Information starting on page 1.! CAUTION Falling Hazard - Installation of the Small Seeds option reduces clearance above the walkboard. Drills with Small Seeds installed require more caution when working on their walkboards. Prepare Drill 3. If the drill to be updated has a Fertilizer box, clean out the box per the instructions in the current drill Operator Manual. 4. Position the drill in a well lighted location suitable for the installation. A clear surface beneath makes it easier to recover any dropped parts. 5. Lower the drill. Dismount SMV Reflector Refer to Figure 3 6. Remove the fasteners securing the existing SMV reflector to the rear of the main seed box. Save the reflector and fasteners. It is re-mounted on a new walkboard extension at step Plug the previous mounting holes with silicone sealant, weatherproof tape, or short fasteners. Figure 3 Dismount Existing SMV /02/ M

8 6 7ft and 10ft EWNT Small Seeds Great Plains Manufacturing, Inc. Update Clutch Shaft The existing clutch shaft is updated with a third sprocket for Small Seeds. The clutch shaft is located at the front of the main seed box, below the gearbox or transmission. If you have a late model drill, you may already have a Small Seeds drive sprocket installed. F L U D R B Refer to Figure 4 8. Inspect the existing clutch shaft 1. If it has a 3 16 in diameter hole 2 about 22in from the right end of the shaft, continue at step 9. If the shaft already has an unused 15T sprocket mounted at this location, continue at Seed Box Mounting on page 7. If you have a very early model drill, it may not have the pin hole for the sprocket. Have your dealer contact the factory regarding a replacement shaft. 9. Carefully note the location of all existing bearings, sprockets, spacers and gears. Note: In addition to the detail in Figure 12 on page 12, digital or instant photography may prove useful during reassembly. It is suggested lines be scribed on the shaft to mark the exact location of each removed or loosened part. 10. Remove only enough existing parts to allow placing a new sprocket and retainers on that portion of the shaft. Install Small Seeds Clutch Sprocket 11. Select one new: C SPKT 40 B 15 X 1 BORE and two new: C PIN ROLL 1/8 X 1LG. PLT. 12. Install the 15 tooth sprocket 204 on the clutch shaft 1 with the two roll pins Figure 4 Remove Existing Clutch Shaft Note: One roll pin may be left out for lighter shear Depending on your drill model, select one of: C SNAP RING or two of: D 1 3/4 LONG SPACER 14. Install either snap ring 201 or shaft spacers 197, needed to retain the sprocket if the roll pins shear. A retainer is not required on drills where the shear sprocket is naturally trapped by other parts on the clutch shaft. 15. Install the new shaft on the drill. IMPORTANT! When placing the 15 tooth sprocket AND any retaining hardware on the shaft, carefully follow the assembly illustration corresponding to the width of your drill. Refer to Figure 12 on page M 06/02/2008

Installation Instructions 7 Seed Box Mounting Refer to Figure 5 If you have a late model drill, you may already have a Small Seeds-ready main seed box, with mounting holes present, and occupied by fasteners. 16. Inspect the back of the main seed box. If there are fasteners at the hole positions in Figure 5, remove them (they are not re-used), and continue at Mount Small Seeds Box on page 8. Mark Holes for Drilling Box 17. Use the dimensions from Figure 5 to mark hole positions on the main box. If three people are available, confirm hole locations by having two people hold the Small Seeds box against the main seed box, and verifying marks at the Small Seeds mounting holes. 18. Drill eight 3 8 in holes in the main seed box at the marked locations. Figure 5 Small Seeds Box Mounting Holes /02/ M

Select two: D SGS BACKING PLATE and four sets of: C HHCS 5/16-18X1 GR C WASHER LOCK SPRING 5/16 PLT C NUT HEX 5/16-18 PLT 21. Loosely attach the outside ends of the Small Seeds box 1 to the main seed box with the 1in bolts 189. Use a backing plate 184 under the lock washer 193 and nut 191 inside the main seed box Figure 6 Mount Small Seeds Box F L U D R B 22. Select two more: D SGS BACKING PLATE and four sets of: C HHCS 5/16-18X3 1/2 GR5 FTHD D 10 EWNT SGS SPACER C WASHER LOCK SPRING 5/16 PLT C NUT HEX 5/16-18 PLT 23. Insert the bolts 190 through the backing plates 184 from the inside of the main seed box, then through the spacers 183 and into the Small Seeds box 1. Secure with lock washers 193 and nuts Tighten all mounting fasteners to torque specifications M 06/02/2008

Installation Instructions 9 Install Rate Adjuster Refer to Figure 7 and Figure 26 on page If the rate adjuster is already assembled and mounted, continue at step 36. The handle pivot is pre-installed. 117 Mount Adjuster Bracket 26. Select one: D GAUGE MOUNTING BRACKET and two sets: C HHCS 1/4-20X3/4 GR C WASHER LOCK SPRING 1/4 PLT C NUT HEX 1/4-20 PLT 27. Insert the bolt 187 through the support plate ( 120, not shown), the box, the bracket 131, and loosely secure with lock washer 159 and nut 152. Mount Scale Plate 28. If the scale plate 174 is already mounted on the bracket 131, loosen the nuts and continue at step Select one new: C NAME PLATE SEED ADJ. GUIDE and two sets new: C SCREW RD HD 8-32 X 3/8 BRASS C WASHER INTERNAL STAR #8 BRASS C NUT HEX 8-32 BRASS and four: C WASHER FLAT #8 BRASS 30. Loosely mount the scale plate 174 on the rear face of the bracket 131, using the brass 8-32 fasteners. Use a flat washer 157 under the screw heads and under the lock washers 156. Mount Adjuster Handle 31. Select one each new: H REAR SEED RATE ADJ HANDLE WLD C WASHER FLAT 3/8 SAE PLT C PIN COTTER 5/32 X 1 PLT 32. With the handle pointing down, and the indicator line 1 on top, slide the hole at the front end up onto the adjustment handle pivot 117. Add the flat washer 160 and secure with cotter pin Select one each new: D LOCK TAB C NUT WING 5/ C RHSNB 5/16-18X1 GR Figure 7 Small Seeds Rate Adjuster Move the handle 137 so that the indicator line 1 is between 0 and 100 on the scale 174. Place the lock tab 118 on top of the handle and above the bottom lip of the bracket 131, with the bent tabs pointing front and down. 35. Loosely secure the lock tab with the bolt 150 and wing nut 155. Align Adjuster Indicator 36. Move the rate adjuster handle from left to right to the full extent of its travel, while observing the handle indicator line 1 and the scale 174. Adjust the position of the scale so that: handle full left is at scale 0, and handle full right is at scale 100. Tighten all scale mounting hardware when this alignment is complete. 1 F L U D R B 06/02/ M

Install Jackshaft Assembly Refer to Figure Select one new: S EWNT SGS JACKSHAFT SUB-ASSY and 4 sets new: C HHCS 3/8-16X1 1/4 GR C WASHER FLAT 3/8 SAE PLT C WASHER LOCK SPRING 3/8 PLT C NUT HEX 3/8-16 PLT 38. If the drill is equipped with fertilizer, temporarily disconnect the left two hoses. They are reconnected at step Position the drive assembly at the extreme left and front edges of the walkboard 1. The location must meet these two requirements: a. The 27T input sprocket (lower right front, not visible in Figure) aligns with the 15T Small Seeds drive sprocket on the clutch shaft. See Figure 12 on page 12. b. At least four mounting plate holes align with walkboard traction holes. 40. Insert four bolts 188, two in the front rank of holes and two in the back. Select one new: D CHAIN RL # PITCHES Open the chain if the ends are connected. 42. Route the opened chain around the 10T jackshaft output sprocket, and in front of the 12T jackshaft idler sprocket. 200 F D B 43. Route the chain over the 27T meter shaft input sprocket. 44. Connect the chain ends. Follow the chain clip orientation recommendation in Figure 22 on page Figure 9 Meter Drive Chain M 06/02/2008

13 Great Plains Manufacturing, Inc. Installation Instructions 11 Jackshaft Input Chain The remaining chain may require modification prior to installation. 45. Select one new: D CHAIN RL # PITCHES The string count includes the main string 1, a short string 2, two connectors 3 and one offset link 4. Open the chain at one connector 3 clip If the drill has fertilizer or Native Grass capability installed, it uses the full 107 pitches of the chain. Continue at step 47. Shorten Chain for Seed-Only When neither Fertilizer nor Native Grass are installed, chain 199 needs to be reduced to 100 pitches. 5 5 Refer to Figure Remove both chain connectors 3 and the 6-pitch string 2 (which is actually 5 pitches and an offset link 4 ). The 6-pitch string and one of the two connector links (7 pitches total) are not used. Figure Pitch Chain 199 Detail Install Jackshaft Input Chain Refer to Figure 11 (gray arrows show chain direction) 47. Route the chain 199 around the 27T jackshaft input sprocket, around the 15T clutch shaft output sprocket, and over the 12T jackshaft input idler. 48. Connect the chain ends. Follow the chain clip orientation recommendation in Figure 22 on page Make final adjustments to the jackshaft weldment, bringing the 27T input sprocket into alignment with the input chain path. Tighten the mounting bolts to torque specification. 50. Adjust the (lower, forward) input idler for 1 2 in of slack in the top span of chain Adjust the (upper, rear) meter drive idler for 1 4 in of slack in the front span of chain 200. As needed, one or two hoses may be routed through the jackshaft bracket. 1 Figure 13 Re-Route Fertilizer Hose Install Chain Guard Refer to Figure Select one each new: D EWNT SGS FORMED SHIELD C NUT CLIP U-TYPE 5/ C NUT HEX 5/16-18 PLT two sets new: C HHCS 5/16-18X1 GR C WASHER LOCK SPRING 5/16 PLT and three new: C WASHER FLAT 5/16 SAE PLT 54. Place the U-clip nut 186 over the hole at the top rear of the inside plate of the jackshaft bracket 198. Orient the integrated nut to the right of the bracket. 55. Place a flat washer 195 on a bolt 189 and insert it, from inside the Small Seeds box 2, through the vertical slotted hole on the left end wall. Loosely secure the top end of the guard 185 with another flat washer 195, lock washer 193 and nut Place a lock washer 193 and flat washer 195 on a bolt 189 and insert it, from drill left, through the lower horizontal slot on the guard 185. Loosely secure with the U-clip nut Snug the guard forward against the main seed box and torque both bolts to specification. F L U R D B Figure 14 Chain Guard /02/ M

Select one each new: D GRASS SEED HOSE, 60IN C SINGLE WIRE HOSE CLAMP # Place a clamp 210 about 2in from one end of the hose Slide this end of the hose fully on to the output port of the right end (or next available) Small Seeds meter Release the clamp and position it about 1 4 in above the bottom of the meter exit port. 62. Repeat step 58 through step 61 for each row unit. Hardware at the row unit is different for 7- and 10-foot drills. For a 10-foot drill continue at step 71 on page 15. Refer to Figure Select one each new: H SGS SIDE DELIVERY TUBE C HFS 3/8-16X3 3/4 SPTHD C NUT FLANGE LOCK 3/8-16 PLT Position the side delivery tube weldment 208 with the tube to the left of the row unit frame, and the side mounting hole aligned with a pair of side holes in the frame behind the main seed tube hole 1. Secure with bolt 212 and nut Select one new: C SINGLE WIRE HOSE CLAMP # Place the clamp 210 about 2in from the bottom end of the hose 207 for this row Slide the bottom end of the hose onto the top of the side delivery tube, so that it completely covers the exposed length of the tube above the welded block. R U B 68. Release the clamp and move it down until it is 1 2 in below the top of the tube. 69. Repeat step 63 through step 68 for the remaining row units. Before mounting the first retainer, examine the row unit. Decide whether Small Seeds delivery is to be in-row or between rows. If Seed-Lok is present, that constrains where the retainer can be placed Refer to Figure Select one each new: D GRASS SEED HOSE RETAINER D HOSE RETAINER MOUNT PLATE four each new: C WASHER FLAT 1/4 SAE PLT and two sets of new: C HHCS 1/4-20X1 1/4 GR C WASHER LOCK SPRING 1/4 PLT C NUT HEX 1/4-20 PLT Position the retainer 205 on the press wheel arm as desired, and clamp in place with the plate 206. Be sure to use a flat washer 214 under both the bolt head 211 and under the lock washer 159. Secure the nut 152 only finger tight until after the hose is installed Select one new: C CLAMP WORM DRIVE 11/16-1 1/4 Open the clamp 209 far enough to allow it to fit over the curved portion of the retainer 205, and to accept the hose Adjust the hose 207 position until the bottom end is just above the exit port on the main seed tube (not shown). Leave enough slack so that the hose is not in tension when the drill is raised, and the row units lowered. Tighten the clamp 209 enough to prevent the hose from coming loose in normal operation. 76. Repeat step 72 through step 75 for the remaining row units. NOTE: MUST BE MOUNTED TO FRONT WHEN USED WITH SEED-LOK. Figure Foot Drill Hose Retainer /02/ M

19 Great Plains Manufacturing, Inc. Operations 17 Operations Loading Seed Small Seed may be loaded in the field or prior to transport. The drill must be hitched for seed loading. The mainframe may be raised or lowered. Lowered places the walkboards closer to the ground, reducing effort when manually loading bagged seed. Small Seeds Box Loading 1. If loading prior to transport, and calibration has not yet been done, set Seed Rate Handles to 0. At 0, no seed can leak from the Small Seeds box during transport. 2. Take all necessary materials safety precautions if the seed is treated. 3. Load seed evenly into seed boxes. 4. To reduce wear, remove main shaft drive chains for main seed boxes, and fertilizer, if not used. Note: Small Seeds do not require seed lubricant. Small Seeds Rate Seeding rate from the optional Small Seeds Attachment is controlled entirely by seed rate handles on each small seeds box. No sprocket changes are required, and small seeds rate is unaffected by settings for main seed and fertilizer boxes. Refer to Figure 19 To set Small Seeds rate, loosen the wing nut 1 at the handle, and adjust the lever 2 position. Move it higher than the desired setting by about 10, then return it to the desired setting. Tighten nut. Field Operations The Small Seeds box operates in the same manner as the main seed box. Small Seeds Rate Calibration Differences will exist between the tested seed and field conditions used to generate the Small Seeds Rate Charts, and your seed and conditions. To accurately achieve your target population, Great Plains recommends calibrating. Perform the calibration with the drill lowered to planting position (if the openers are raised, the clutch disengages). Leave the tractor hitched for movement control. Block the tires not being used in the calibration. 1. Jack up the left drive gauge wheel. Use blocks to ensure that the drill cannot fall if the jack relaxes, tips over or fails. 2. Rotate the gauge wheels and check that the drives and seed cups are engaged, working properly and free from foreign material. If not already done, set the Small Seeds Rate Handle. If fertilizer is loaded, remove the fertilizer drive chain (unless you are simultaneously calibrating fertilizer rate). 3. Check that your gauge-wheel tires are the correct size for the drill and properly inflated. See Tire Inflation Chart in Operator Manual. 4. Record the weight of one to three empty containers collectively large enough to hold seed metered. 5. Place several pounds of seed over three seed cups on the outside end of the drill box. Pull lower end seed hoses off of these drops at the opener end. 6. Turn gauge wheel several times to fill seed cups. Turn until seed drops to ground from each hose. 7. Place empty container(s) under the three hoses to gather metered seed. 8. Turn gauge wheel until one acre is tallied on acremeter (see Operator Manual for your drill). While turning, check that cups have ample seed coming into them. 9. Weigh metered seed. Subtract initial weight of container(s).! WARNING You may be severely injured or killed by being crushed from a falling implement or openers. Always have transport locks in place and frame sufficiently blocked up when working on the drill. For example: 1005NT-1575 drill using a row spacing of: 7.5in row count: 15 you desire to plant alfalfa at: 10 pounds per acre; this corresponds to an initial Seed Rate Handle of: 50 For example: three 5.7oz (0.356 pound) containers weigh: 1.07 lbs NetWeight = GrossWeight ContainerWeights For example: the three containers weighed a total 3.17 lbs after test: 2.1 lbs net 2.1 = M 06/02/2008

MeasuredRate = For example: a 7.5in drill has 15 rows: 10.5 lbs/ac = NetWeight RowCount The Seed Rate Handle scale is a percentage of meter opening, and is quite linear near scale center. Calculate a new scale setting based on the test. Note: If operating near scale extremes, do not calculate a correction factor. Instead use the rate error to move left or right in the chart to a new rate, and the use scale setting for that rate. NewScale = For example: new scale: = TargetRate OldScale MeasuredRate Note: You may want to repeat calibration procedure if your results varied greatly from the Seed Rate Chart, or if you must operate near the ends of the Seed Rate handle scale (0-20 or ). 12. With calibration complete, reinstall fertilizer chain (if removed, and fertilizer to be applied), reconnect seed hoses, and lower gauge wheel to ground. When drilling, check seeding rate by noting acres drilled, amount of seed added to drill and seed level in drill box. If you are seeding more or less than desired, adjust rate slightly to compensate for field conditions. 06/02/ M

Small Seeds Row Shut-Off Refer to Figure 20 If alternate row spacing is required for small seeds, optional plugs are available to block flow inside the seed box tray. 1. Cleanout seed. The seed box must be empty prior to inserting plugs. See Small Seeds Box Cleanout on page Before installing plugs, inspect the seed boxes for existing factory-installed plugs. These are blocking extra unused seed ports. You may want to identify these plugs with an indelible marker. 3. Insert one plug at each row to shut off. Verify the seed hose path before inserting the plug, as some hoses do not make a strictly vertical drop to their row units. 4. Review seed rate settings and marker extension prior to planting. To recover remaining seed, place a collection tarp under the small seeds tubes at the openers. 3. Raise drill. 4. Set seed rate handles to Rotate gauge wheels until no seed flows. 6. If a vacuum cleaner is available, remove any residual seed from top of meters. Chain Maintenance Inspect and lubricate chains regularly. The slack of new chains tends to increase during the first few hours of operation due to seating. 1 Chain Slack Check slack within the first 8 hours of operation and adjust idlers as necessary. Refer to Figure 21, which, for clarity, greatly exaggerates slack, and omits the idlers. 1. Measure the span 1 for allowable slack: Locate the longest span of each chain (usually the span which does not run through the idlers). The ideal slack is between 2% and 4% of the span. For example: A slack of 1 2 in is appropriate for a 17in span. 2. Measure the current slack 2 : Acting at a right angle to the chain span at the center of the span, deflect the chain in both directions with a force of about 9 lbs (4 kg). The slack is the distance of the movement. 3. Adjust the idlers for ideal slack. Whenever mounting a chain, make sure the clip at the removable link is oriented to minimize snags.
